We're now on the 11th day of my daily presidents threads celebrating the 250th anniversary of the USA.Today is James K. Polk (11/2/1795 - 6/15/1849), who served as president from 1845 to 1848. He was a dark horse candidate that nobody knew about, but managed to win nevertheless. Notable events or actions during his presidency include Manifest Destiny, the Oregon Treaty, the Walker Tariff, the Mexican-American War and the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo, the California Gold Rush, the Coinage Act of 1849, and the establishment of the Independent Treasury. What do you think of the guy who kept all his promises?

>Polk met with the aged Andrew Jackson at the Hermitage in early 1845. Jackson was reportedly disillusioned when Polk made it clear that he intended to be his own president and had no intention of simply executing Jackson's orders. Jackson passed away in June at the age of 78.

>There were extremists who called for annexing additional Mexican territory or even the entire country. John Calhoun condemned these proposals. In a speech on the Senate floor, he said "Sir, I tell you we have never dreamed of annexing into our nation anything other than the free race, the white race. To conquer Mexico would be to absorb a great number of non-whites, for most of her population is composed of Indians and the rest consists mainly of mixed tribes. I heartily protest against such a union as that."
