Moving straight at the enemy without stopping to shoot is for special situations where you need to break the enemy line in a specific position, to then exploit the breech. Or in some earlier times (with lower reload speed weapons) to move into close range, give one volley, then go into melee (the swedes did that). It's not the usual way of doing things and it's not what the brits would have done in that battle.
