Greece would always be an inherently crippled state without their capital. When they became independent, they literally didn't have anything. Not even Thessalonika, the second most important city in Byzantine history. Athens was literally in ruins and populated by Greek Orthodox Albanians, when they became independent. And even to this day it looks like a South American slum and not a proper capital city. THAT is why Greece failed. Their rebellion would never have succeeded without Western support and sadly the Egyptians ran rampant in the Peloponnese and Attica and significantly depopulated it, which further crippled Greece yet again.Greece simply didn't have the potential to do Megali on their own. They really needed some kind of patron, who would do the heavy lifting for them. Best case would have been Germany, Russia and Austria uniting and dismantling the Ottoman Empire. But since Greece was also very internally divided in the Great War, maybe even that wouldn't have worked and they would have been couped like Yugoslavia in WW2 and occupied by the Holy Alliance/Central Powers.

They were recognized by the Greeks as their own people, because their identity was primarily tied to the Greek Orthodox religion. So despite speaking Albanian, they had no issues whatsoever abandoning their language and to just adopt the Greek language.
