We're now on Day 43 of my daily US states threads in honor of the 250th anniversary of this country.Texas joined as the 28th state on 12/29/1845. Its name is based on the Caddo word tay:sha, meaning friend. It has a population of 31.7 Million and is 268.6k Square Miles in size. Its capital is Austin and its largest city is Houston. Two presidents (Eisenhower, Johnson) are from here.Texas was first explored by de Vaca in 1527, who found a multicultural Native American territory. Although nominally part of New Spain, Texas was sparsely controlled due to the risk of Comanche raiders. The first settlement, Ft. St. Louis in 1685, only lasted 4 years. In the 1820's, American settlers began to immigrate into the freshly Mexican territory. Many of these settlers openly ignored Mexican law, leading to conflict. This culminated in the 1832 Anahuac Disturbances, driving Mexican soldiers from the region. The Texas Revolution began in 1835, leading to battles such as Gonzales, the Alamo, and a declaration of independence in 1836. Texas existed as an independent country for 10 years before it was willingly annexed in 1845. The annexation of Texas was an instigator for the Mexican-American War as Mexico did not recognize the USA's claim. In 1860, Texas joined the Confederacy, with slaves being around 30% of its population. Texas afterwards became a center of cattle, cotton, and lumber. In 1900, the Galveston Hurricane became the deadliest natural disaster in US history. The discovery of oil in 1901 revolutionized the economy, and Texas continues to thrive on oil to this day. What do you think of The Lone Star State?

is this really a “southern” state or is it like, its own thing?
>>18645262Kinda. It's in the South of the US, but not quite the "deep South" as usually defined. Reminder that everything is bigger in Texas.
>>18645110Texas more like Jeetxas. No state contains more LARPing fake faggots and pussies per capita than Texas.
>>18645571>>18645241>tacos hand
Nuke.
>>18645110>In 1839, President Mirabeau B. Lamar of the Republic of Texas authorized the acquisition of 1,500 flintlock muskets from the Tryon Company of Philadelphia to equip the professional army. These muskets, commonly known as the Tryon Texas contract muskets, were highly esteemed for their superior quality, which civilian inspector George Flegal deemed comparable to U.S. military armaments. Due to logistical and possibly epidemic-related issues, only 860 muskets were delivered and paid for by 1840. Some of these muskets played significant roles in military operations, such as 321 that were issued to Texas troops against the pro-centralist Mexican and later use in the War of Southern Independence.
>>18645262Only the eastern third of the state can be considered Southern. It was a mostly unsettled frontier state in the Civil War and saw little fighting on its territory.
>>18645600Texas was the principle supply base for the Trans-Mississippi Confederate armies as their food and munitions mostly came from there. Galveston was also not closed by the Navy until near the end of the war due to its distant location.
>>18645110Like most of the former Confederate states, it was an agrarian Solid South state until the 1950s when the build-up of Cold War MIC industries made it into its modern day form. The state's ruling class however always considered their identity as Texans bigger than their identity as Southerners despite LBJ's use of his grandfather's military service in the Confederate army at campaign time when he could exploit it for Southern votes.
>>18645609Lady Bird Johnston was the first First Lady to become a millionaire in her own right through defense contractor stocks that conveniently mushroom from the Vietnam War and her ownership of TV and radio outlets in Austin after her husband convinced the FCC to disregard the illegal monopoly this created.
>>18645589No state is more brown than Texas
My cousin is a Texan and was in the Army during the War on Terror era. He said the guys from Alabama, Georgia, etc told him he wasn't a "real" Southerner.
>>18645604there was trannies in the confederate army kek
>>18645630They’re correct
>>18645604Union troops occupied the city early in the war but Confederates under John Magruder re-took it in January 1863 and it remained under Confederate control until the final surrender in 1865.
>>18645262It used to be more southern (19th century), but there was a conscious effort to move away from it in the 20th century and shift the whole cultural frame of reference to being Western and also part-Mexican. I think a big reason was the growing importance of oil and the desire of business elites to present an optimistic, modern, forward-looking image for investment from northern business. You see this start to happen in between the world wars. Gov. Colquitt also went crazy building monuments to the Texas Revolution.East Texas is still more southern in the piney parts east of Dallas and I-45, which connects Dallas and Houston. You go to the east it's more like the Deep South. There's also the ArkLaTex region which feels like one of the last Confederate redoubts. The center of population also shifted. A greater proportion of the population lived in East Texas in the late 1800s in towns like Tyler, Paris, Palestine, and Marshall.>>18645604The border towns in the RGV were also interesting places during the Civil War. Crazy smuggler hubs full of spies.>>18645630Yeah they do that. It's weird and funny though, was in South Carolina and went to shoot at the Palmetto State Armory with some friends, and the guy there was a total dick to my friend because he had an ID from Washington D.C., it's like go home Yankee. But he was polite to me when he saw my Texas ID.
>>18645630They're just jealous. There's no denying that East Texas is part of the south. I have friends from the Sulfur Springs/Greenville area, you wouldnt know you weren't in one of half of the southern states. If you're from San Antonio or El Paso though, you're not Southern.
>>18645630they also don't consider Virginia a Southern state anymore
>>18645600The Wild West phase in Texas didn't end until World War II, all the way to the 1920s there were lynchings, occasional cross-border Mexican bandit raids, and lots and lots of bank robberies; nearly every week one happened somewhere in the state.
>>18645886Washington is a blight that destroyed Virginia
>>18645886D.C. was also considered a Southern town at one time.
>>18645878>I have friends from the Sulfur Springs/Greenville areaI have an aunt who lives outside Greenville and yeah. The World Cup was a funny thing because thousands of visitors from Croatia or England and wherever got dumped into the Fort Worth Stockyards which is a tourist trap for an artificially constructed old-timey Texas experience, and people would go crazy for it. But Billy Bob's is a real place for country music and that was a major livestock hub. Tourists and visitors really like the cowboy thing and get disappointed when you take the magic away, King of the Hill satirized this:https://youtu.be/GbThfnW4RmcAlso they are surprised it's wetter and greener than they imagined. Most of the population lives in a humid subtropical climate. But they're thinking of West Texas and cowboy-western films that are often not filmed in Texas.
>>18645887>and lots and lots of bank robberies; nearly every week one happened somewhere in the state.>>18645382bank robberies were made a Federal offence for the first time in the 30s (if the bank operated in multiple states) as this was an endemic back then
Here's some contemporary country from Fort Worth. The hybrid country and punk/goth girl thing in this is interesting. Texas has done that kind of crossover stuff well I think, back in the 70s there was a lot of country-hippie fusion, most famously Willie Nelson.https://youtu.be/YgAhGAy2tww
>>18645895the Old West-looking Texas is mostly west of the 100th meridian
>>18645901Not too far from that is Cross Plains. That's an interesting little town on account of Robert E. Howard living there in the 1920s, early 1930s before an heroing. He wrote Conan the Barbarian and other stories. The hardcore fans don't like the Schwarzenegger movies. I'm not sure why but he is a really libertarian kind of character. The guy invented a complete fantasy world and was probably most influential in the sword & sorcery genre next to Tolkien. And he was just a guy living out in this town in the middle of nowhere. There was an oil boom at the time and lots of crazy guys would pass through. Might also say something about the outlaws running around too, and very recent (in those times) experience in people's memories with border warfare that went on for decades.https://youtu.be/W5K3AKl5qpc
The fans also gather there every summer for a weekend. It's like a mini-con of Conan fans. I drove out there two years ago, it was pretty interesting. This guy was one of the main dudes organizing it, he's an archaeologist. There's not much in the town and a chunk of the place burned down in the 2000s during a bad wildfire. It's east of Abilene.
>>18645909Pure kino. One of my favorite films. The stories are great too, Beyond the Black River!
second largest state by area and second most populated yet it's not even 1/10th as relevant as either of each respective number one spots (Alaska and California). Truly the global south of America
>>18645953How is Texas not as equally relevant to California, and how does it not dwarf Alaska in relevance?
>>18645957California and New York are the centers of American Soft Power so it's not even a fair comparison
>>18645961Soft Power doesn’t mean much without energy or the military industrial complex. Also when foreigners think of America, they either think of your aforementioned cosmopolitans from those states, loud mouth Texans, or crazy Floridians (more recent). The country spins on those 4 states practically, at this point equally ever since the sunbelt transition took off.
>>18645604they were pretty well equipped and most had Enfield rifles by late 1862 as Texas's ports weren't blockaded and the state was not significantly invaded during the war so its infrastructure was mostly undisturbed
>>18645647>>18645621Brazil is kino
>>18645971Which place got hit by a recent hurricane?
>>18645110Is it true that there is a law that Texas could be partitioned into 5 states if the congress really wanted to?
Used to be a pretty cool place. It’s currently getting JEETED however.
>>18645961California has been slowly declining for at least 20 years. Still wealthy and powerful but not like it wast. SLO
>>18646798Sort of yeah. I think both Texas and Congress would have to agree to it? There's a section of the annexation clause in 1845 that said that four new states (in addition to Texas itself, so five) could be added out of the territory of the annexed republic. It was a real possibility but in the 20th century turned into more of a thing that Texas politicians such as John Nance Garner would pull out of the closet and rattle at lawmakers in Washington. Like you best respect Texas otherwise we'll split it up and then you'll have to deal with 10 senators instead of two!!! But people stopped taking that seriously awhile ago and nobody has actually tested it.
A funny thing you see occasionally in Texas are historical maps of the claimed territory of the republic, which absorbed most of New Mexico, cut Colorado in half through the Rocky Mountains, and jutted as far north as Wyoming. Laying the groundwork for imperial expansion to the Pacific Ocean, some of these crazy Texans were thinking.People might be familiar with Sam Houston because the city is named after him, but from 1838 to 1841 the president was Mirabeau B. Lamar who had these ideas. He sent a military expedition to take Sante Fe from the Mexicans but that was a disaster.
>>18646860They also went south to help the newly formed Republic of Yucatan against the Mexican government. The Texians were ballsy as fuck.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naval_Battle_of_Campeche
T.R. Fehrenbach is one of the most famous Texas historians. Controversial now because he was a grim and unapologetically Anglo kind of guy who didn't apologize for anything but didn't whitewash it either. All about conquerers and the dangerous types of warlike aborigines who roamed 'round here. Also wrote a history of the Korean War.>“The Mexican-Indian warfare taken together spawned an almost incredible amount of violence across west and southwest Texas. Almost every ranch, every water hole, and every family had its record of gunshots in the night and blood under the sun … Because of this history, the dominant Texan viewpoint was not that Texans settled Texas, but they conquered it. Many other Americans have never been able to rationalize this in terms of a mythical North American mission in the world. Texas was never a refuge for the lowly, or oppressed, or a beacon proclaiming human rights. It was a primordial land with a Pleistocene climate, inhabited by species inherently hostile to the Anglo-Celtic breed.”[...]>“The moral, upstanding Comanche who lived by the laws and gods of his tribe enjoyed heaping live coals on a staked-out white man’s genitals; a moral Mexican, for a fancied insult, would slip his knife into an Anglo back. The moral Texan, who lived in peace and amity with his fellows, would bash an Indian infant’s head against a tree, or gut-shoot a ‘greaser’ if he blinked.”[...]>“More and more anthropologists believe that the desire to expand, to seize territory and hold it, is a human instinct easily aroused, and one that requires no rationalization. It is only when the rationalization is attempted that hypocrisy enters in … In fact, if many of the ideas and arguments expressed in Anglo-America concerning peace and human rights had been dominant, it is not inconceivable to contemplate a United States still cramped behind the Alleghenies, complaining to world opinion about Amerind raids.”
>>18646860Texas had refused to cede its vast western region to the newly created New Mexico Territory. President Taylor threatened war against the state, and they quickly gave in. The Compromise of 1850 included a provision ceding western Texas in exchange for which the government would assume the state's outstanding debts.
>>18646879Texas troops had a reputation in the Civil War for aggressiveness. Which also led to high casualties. It would've been the case that many of them were born in other parts of the South and migrated to Texas, so that probably had already selected for the more aggressive types of men who were heading west into what was a Comanche warzone.
>>18645887Texas recorded its last lynching in 1927, which was actually early as quite a few happened elsewhere later.
This is the Llano Escatado, was a Comanche fortress.
>The Llano Estacado is where I am blessed to live. A hundred and sixty years ago, it was called Comancheria as it was the stronghold of the most fierce of all Indian tribes, the Comanche. Anyone who dared to cross this part of Texas, did so at their own risk-whether white, red or brown. Even the United States Calvary dared to not enter this part of Texas for many years. This unlucky trio has been found by the Comanche and must run for their lives. We can tell from the sweat on their horses that this battle has lasted a while, but I think they'll get away...what do ya'll think?https://www.jacksorensonfineart.com/post/jumped-on-the-llano
>>18645957>>18645961history AND geography reason>NYmore like Northeast dominancehttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northeast_megalopolishttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megaregions_of_the_United_States>Historically the first region to be settled by British, the oldest among the original 13 colonies.>Northeast also closer to Europe and culturally Anglo with GA being the southernmost. Besides, southern states was less Anglo: FL, TX have Spanish influence, LA (state and territory) has French influence, all of these were Americanized based on Anglo culture>Union victory cemented Northeast US as the sole regional leader among US states. Northeast settlements suffered little to none devastation to war while Southern states have to rebuild and their readmission to Union symbolically "resets" the seniority in US federal politics. The southern states basically are more junior compared to the northeasthowever, Northeast region is also powerful because how close the proximity between the largest cities. Acela corridor has DC as the political capital of US while NYC as the financial capital of US with big old money & power in those cities. these megalopolis are close to each other because it was developed alongside the coast. Texas & the southern states to Florida despite having very long coastline, doesn't have maritime fame like Northeastern region because northeast has older maritime history of US and closer to Europe (when Europe was the center of the world)continued in next reply for California but tldr why CA > TX in relevancy: Geography! Pacific Coast & Mountain states separated West Coast from the main bulk of US in the eastern side
>>18647003California is basically indispensable for US influence in Asia Pacific. Historically, it's the top priority for US government to annex California from Mexico, with PNW being less urgent due to co-governance with British Empire. unlike PNW, California has best weather, climate, vast agricultural land & two coastal space (SF bay area & LA~SD) while PNW weather is cold, rainy, wild with rugged mountainous coastline (hence PNW coastal cities are focused in Vancouver-Seattle-Tacoma).The rocky mountains also caused West coast being isolated from the rest of the core East Coast.>70~80% of Americans live in East coast (everything east of Austin)>the rest 20~30% are in West coast and half of these are in CaliforniaAs for Alaska, it is due to latitude. cold, inhospitable to live. Alaska's nickname "The Last Frontier" is for that and many reasons.
>>18646968>Texas recorded its last lynching in 1927"Recorded" is doing a lot of work here. I used to live there. Texas has retaliatory murders to this day.
>>18647288But don't involve any ropes so that's ok
is the 'steers and queers' thing true
>>18646860>>18646959Imagine Texas was industrialized before the Civil War/War Between the States.
>>18647608Some are both. Willie Nelson wrote a song about it.
>>18646882>“The moral, upstanding Comanche who lived by the laws and gods of his tribe enjoyed heaping live coals on a staked-out white man’s genitals; a moral Mexican, for a fancied insult, would slip his knife into an Anglo back. During the Solid South era, Germans in central Texas were an island of Republican support. They had been Unionists in the Civil War and refused to serve in the Confederate army, angering authorities and some were attacked and lynched by mobs.

But otherwise it never "party switched" although obviously the politics there are conservative today.
