Something like 75% of the megafauna died out and everyone is too chickenshit to clone & breed them back even though there's like a dozen species we could get cookin' on right now. I wanna see more elephants and wild cattle. Bring back the historical global lion range. Economically? Culturally? Technologically? No way. The modern period is a fascinating rollercoaster of constant action. There's always some new toy, new problem, new solution, new foods, it's great. I love living in the future (despite everything). I might actually live long enough to see aliens AND learn if we're all related or if each planet has to make life from scratch. We only think history is "cool" because we're getting a highlight reel; if you lived in the past you could go hundreds of years where literally nothing interesting happened for better or for worse - provided you didn't die from some random, normally inconsequential problem, or bout of horrifying violence.

They've been trying to breed back the Aurochs since the 00's and as of last year they've got an "sufficiently authentic" enough animal for some controlled releases into a highland park in Scotland to see how they'd fair/gauge environment impact, shore up some of their numbers, and hopefully generate some more natural behaviors. It's an interesting project. For a long time it didn't feel like it wasn't making any real progress, but sometime in the 10's better genetic sampling revealed Spanish Fighting Bulls and several Indian breeds of cattle had quite a lot of intact Aurochs dna that really sped-up the process.
