>Frederic Remington (born October 4, 1861, Canton, New York, U.S.—died December 26, 1909, near Ridgefield, Connecticut) was an American painter, illustrator, and sculptor noted for his realistic portrayals of life in the American West.>Remington studied art at Yale University (1878–80) and briefly (1886) at the Art Students League of New York. Thereafter he devoted himself primarily to illustrative work. In the years between his schooling, he traveled widely, spending much time west of the Mississippi River, and he made a specialty of depicting Native Americans, cowboys, soldiers, horses, and other aspects of life on the plains. On those trips he sketched and photographed continuously, amassing material to take back to and work from in his studio in New York City.>During the 1880s and ’90s many of Remington’s illustrations were printed in such popular magazines as Harper’s Weekly and Scribner’s Magazine. He also published a number of books and articles that served mainly as vehicles for his illustrations. During the Spanish-American War he was a war correspondent and artist. Remington was primarily a reporter, recording the image of the thing seen; his work is notable for its rendering of swift action and its accuracy of detail. In 1895 he created The Broncho Buster, the first of his well-known bronze sculptures. The Remington Art Museum in Ogdensburg, New York, contains an important collection of his paintings, illustrations, and bronze statuettes.https://www.britannica.com/biography/Frederic-Remington
Fun fact. His museum in Ogdensburg, NY sometimes has student art exhibitions from area schools, and one of my pieces got in when I was a kid.
>>5199695Any advice on people getting into art learning to draw? I got all the beginner books but it is so dull to make cubes and cones.
>>5199975Nope. It was an etching and I was 8.
>>5199617Good stuff, OP. I was aware of his sculptures, not of his paintings. Thanks for posting them.
>>5199975Define your goals, outline what resources you have and what level of commitment you're willing to spend on this. You may want to paint kinda like this guy in terms of style and narrative painting, but you only have pencil and paper and only want to be a hobbyist that learns alone. To do that you're starting by learning from observation and nature. Look at a tree, stare at a tree and when you get sick of looking look at it some more. From that point try to draw it, starting from shapes in proportion, then values, then details. You can look for books on (written prior to 1950) on specific topics and ways people went about their work and you can experiment with it at your leisure. When you get good at drawing from nature, then you start making your own scenes. When you get good at that, you can start learning to paint.

>>5199617Great thread. My parents liked Western art. They had a book about him in our home. Booth Museum north of Atlanta is someplace you should visit.

I know I find his work more interesting than I do...
this is fantastic.
>>5200323I've got into promo as a good beginner class with their podcast and vast knowledge. I have the a couple fundamental art books and now I just need to draw! The hardest part! This guy seems to have been perfect for blood meridian.
Truly amazing artist and an oasis from all the gooner threads. More please! This board is slow as hell. Highly appreciate the effort to showcase this artist. Had never heard of him but will look more into him. I would certainly like to have an ounce of his talent. Wouldn't focus on the southwest alone. Cowboys and samurais would be a neat aesthetic. Science fiction is the ambition. There is a comic book artist that did incredible paintings in This manner of The entire justice league. Can't remember his name.
