No, they're not magnets or infohashes; they're just plain old URLs that have been encoded. We're doing this to keep bots and scripts from recognizing them as URLs and harvesting/reporting them. The recap posts at the top of the threads have GIFs or WEBMs explaining how to use them. Also, some of the encoded links *may* have multiple layers - like ogres ... or onions! You might have to "peel" them more than once to get to the good part.

What are some must have japanese books for begs and ints? Translated ideally. Looking to branch out as I have only done stuff like keys, loomis etc
>>
>>7643939
No such thing imo. Unless you consider Japanese edition of Loomis? Morpho books sell well to in Japan.
I guess you want something like kawaiisensei. Toshi or Junichi Hayama is better and definitely Japanese, but not translated.
Imo, mangas about drawing are also on purpose educational. Especially in the earlier chapters. Examples:
- Blue Period
- Blank Canvas
- Animeta

I figure I'll ask here instead of making a thread about it. What are some good methods for translating Japanese art books? Yandex and Google translate are terrible. I found an AI pdf translator but it took 20 minutes, got stuck at 100% and refused to complete after an hour. Tried again and same shit happened.

So far I've resorted to using Yandex to give me the raw moonrunes and then asking gemini to "explain this excerpt from an anime artbook in english: (moonrunes here)" It's the only thing remotely effective, it's able to accurately explain and actually make sense. But it's painfully fucking slow having to screencap the pdf, drag it to yandex, click japanese because it always picks chinese, click raw text, decipher where the text I want begins, then go to gemini, paste it, copy from gemini, put the text in the image and try to make it fit, all for like half a page at a time.
>>
>>7647375
Why should I tell you lol? You just gonna use my knowledge for grifting. Or at the very least spamming e-hentai, 4chan, pirate book sites with MTLs.
>>
>>7647375
DeepL is a bit better for Japanese. It handles context a bit better, and Japanese is very context dependent.
I use Translation Aggregator, it automatically translates the text in your clipboard. it can show you many different translations at the same time. You can also hover over the Japanese text to see what each words means too.
NotebookLM can auto OCR whole PDFs, and can translate stuff too I think, might wanna try that out.

I just did a deep dive in the Japanese side of learning art and that anon is right, not only that book is widely used in the anime industry, but Loomis and Jack Hamm is used by both anime and manga industry.
Those 3 guys were rec by 2ch for years like picrel that's from 2017.
>>
>>7651013
For some reason, the program I used detected the word ‘cat’ on every page of the book, and the result was downright hilarious.
I saw a bunch of AI translations on e-hentai that were really good. I don't know what software they used. Here, I used a small Python script I found on GitHub but it’s not very good, it uses the Google Translator API.
>>
Question (I figure since it's artbook related, I shove it in here):

Get a comic book, preferrably a bad comic book. Open it to a page. Study it, and think about how you would go about fixing it. Then draw the corrected page. You don't have to do finished pencils unless you want. Even a thumbnail sketch is enough. The important thing is to get into the mindset of drawing page layouts.

Bookstores have shit selection. People buy online. Buy from amazon etc. and send to local convenience store. But I'm not sure if that's possible if you don't have a Japanese address.

Or go to used bookstores.

I would recommend books that are not available on pirate sites. Or books with bad scans.

I need to check my booklist to give recommendations. On top of my mind, Katsuhiro Otomo's recent-ish Akira books. Those will probably never be scanned. But not everyone like Akira.

You’re supposed to request rare, expensive ($300+), out-of-print books, especially the ones that haven’t been reprinted in 3+ years and are stuck with shitty scans. Now I’m fully convinced it’s just a bunch of turdworld beggars spamming the requests with this trash.

Getting Started with Animation in CLIP STUDIO PAINT! Basic & Advanced Techniques from a Professional Animator – A Beginner’s First Book

Author: Keisuke Kojima (animator/anime director)

I want to request some key animation collection books like Groundwork of Rebuild of Evangelion I think we're still missing scans of Rebuild 3 and Rebuild 4. Maybe you can find them on Mandarake offline stores, although they can definitely ship them too.
>>
>>7670632
>I want to request
Wat. Buy them yourself. Absolutely shameless and ignorant. Both movies have 2 groundworks books each, a total of 4. They are out of print. And most stores don’t have any of them.
Who in the right mind would rip apart rare-ish and expensive books like that for ungrateful online strangers like you?

Just pray they release them digitally in a decade or so and hope that there would be an effective deDRM method then. Basically what happened to the old groundworks books.

I get it's basically the best animated tv anime ever made. I just don't see why the book is best for copying compared to others.

I'm trying to remember a specific How to Draw Manga-type book that I have only fairly vague memories of. A bit of a long shot but hope it rings a bell for one of you.

Would have read it in my teens, so 10-15 years ago at least. Original language was English most likely. It stood out to me because it was pretty text-heavy and the art was actually notably better and inspired compared to the usual slop these books have. And it wasn't just about copying character linearts but I think it had stuff about developing a setting and scene composition and such too. A lot of the illustrations were what I assume the author's OCs in various scenes, definitely a teen girl and guy, maybe a child too? There was one several-page long comic sequence in particular where they were in some snowy place (mountains?) and the guy was fighting some big monster (or robot?) while the girl was looking. I think she was dressed in like a fur hat and long coat, with a sort of Victorian/steampunk vibe to them, a bit like pic related (random pic I grabbed from danbooru).

Book didn't really appeal to me as a kid because it had a lot to actually read, but it keeps randomly popping into my mind in recent years and it's starting to bother me. I need to see it again lol
>>
>>7671572
Let it go, anon. You missed your chance to become a great mangaka.
>>
>>7671269
There's a famous art advice on 2ch that got copy pasted repeatedly, basically telling art beginners to grab a dennou coil gengashuu, get a ton of papers, B pencils and no erasers, try copy every frame in the book and you'll get better.

Then there's this guy who actually did it and made a video about it reporting his progress (to find out whether the advice was helpful or not)
https://youtu.be/SCJ9jMWthC8?si=ChwdXl0jZmZCS_CF

An animator in the comment says copying alone won't make you good, but it's a good supplement to more basic books like Yasuo Muroi/Anime Shijuku's books. Try analyze the pose in dennou coil, try to grasp the proportion and try to replicate it, then try again this time drawing it from different angle.

I think it's a good advice. Although I'd say the Dennou Coil book is also good for learning about spacing and timing since it has timesheets next to the keyframes. Also it can be used as a douga/inbetween practice. Take a look at a certain scene and its timesheet, now look how many inbetweens were required in that scene (the ' signs in the timesheets are inbetween). After that make your own inbetweens by drawing a new scene on top of the keyframe from the book (or use onion skin if you're on digital). It'll deepen your understanding of animation, especially on spacing and timing.
>>
>>7671684
>>
>>7671684
This just seems like basic art improvement advice to me. You practice anything deliberately and you'll improve. It's kind of crazy that they just decide to believe it regardless where it's coming from but I guess if you improve then that's all that matters. Just like Frazetta's copy Bridgman twice story. Anything to get you to actually put pencil to paper.
>>
>>7671684
It’s funny 2ch has its own “draw Bridgman twice”.
We should combine both into “draw Dennou Coil twice”.
>>7671704
The guy on that youtube video didn’t improve. Pretty bad considering he did it for 9 months.
But his goal was to improve as/become an animator. Not learning how to draw or learn anatomy or learn anime-style. His is a much more difficult goal.
He already could draw from what I can tell.
I don’t want to call him or the 2ch advice retarded. It's the same idea as “draw Bridgman twice”. You subconsciously magically assimilate animation principles instead of anatomy. Ok, it’s retarded.
>>
>>7671861
My bad. I misunderstood the video. He was trying to improve his drawing. His goals have nothing to do with animation. But the original 2ch copypasta was about becoming an animator.
>>
>>7671861
>The guy on that youtube video didn’t improve. Pretty bad considering he did it for 9 months.

If you have a gengashuu or keyframe collection book that has timesheet next to the keyframes:
1. Take a look at the keyframes/drawings, what cell/layer is it named? It can be A, B, C, D, E, .... sometimes they can put two layers in one keyframe, for example layer A for character, B for effects such as smokes, etc. (Also "Book" is for background afaik, and background can have its own timing too!).
2. Now look at the timesheets, those rectangle thing with a column named A, B, C, D, E,... which corresponds to the layer's name on the keyframe.
3. Those colums have many rows that extend to the bottom, think of it like a timeline chart in animation program. 24 boxes in each colum corresponds to 1 second.
4. Drawing/keyframe is usually named A1, A2, A3, etc, and the numbers are usually circled, those are the keyframes. Sometimes they use triangles for "drawing reference" for inbetweeners.
5. Now check the timesheets, you'd notice that some boxes in the colum are blank. This is because anime are not made on 1s or 24frames per second. They are mare on 2s (12 keyframes/second) or 3s (8 keyframes per second).
6. Now you'd also notice between A1 to A2 (or generally, between each keyframes), sometimes the animator ticked some boxes. These are the inbetween that need to be drawn by dougaman/inbetweeners. Think of it like filling the gap between two keyframes. Same thing with the triangle/reference drawing that I mentioned before.

That's basically it! You test this out by putting each keyframe from a gengashuu on animation program, and arrange it according to the timesheets and play it. It'll move just as the animator intended.
>>
>>7672708
Spacing is a different thing, it's also related to inbetween, from what I understand. If the animator is animating at 3s (meaning they only draw 8 keyframes per second), they may instruct the inbetweeners to draw one or two drawings between the keyframes. A spacing chart is like an instruction about how close the inbetween should be relative to the keyframes. There are many examples on youtube, the simplest one is usually of a bouncing/moving ball, easing in and out have different output.
>>
>>7658353
Thanks, I want my stuff to be more like Mucha linework wise. I'll use it to practice my colors.

What are the best (mostly) black and white B/W (pencil) sketch collection available on piracy sites? As in good resolution or scan quality. I want to print some of them for personal use, so they need to be good enough quality for printing.

On top of my mind:
- Rough Archive
- Hayama Junichi books
- Hidetoshi Omori books (unfortunately they are short)
- FMA Sketch Artbook
- ALICESOFT ORION SCRIBBLES
- Dorohedoro

Not looking for keyframes collection/gengashuu. They are actually in color to indicate shadows and highlight, even if the artbooks are sold in black and white.

other:"sketch lines$" on e-hentai doesn't show everything. Because a lot have incomplete tags.

What’s actually the single best book on colour in anime-style/weeb digital illustrations?
The usually recommended books Gurney, How to Render, 3dtotal are only available as scans on pirate ebooks websites. Not digital releases.
So I was thinking to buy ONE physical book on colour from amazon. Just one because money is tight. Any recommendations? Ideally something with lots of exercises.

anyone got this?

I used to have a pdf of an all japanese book that I can only describe as "like toshi but better." does anyone know what I'm talking about? It's like if you had only ever seen toshi's books and then saw this guy you'd think toshi was trying to imitate his style but wasn't as good. i had found it in a mega link in the same folder as toshi's books
>>
>>7693981
It’s either Hayama Junichi or TACO or Yoh Yoshinari or unironically the many different Toshi books. Probably TACO though. In that case, shit taste.
>>
>>7694046
it must be another toshi book because none of the guys you mentioned are even close. the artist i'm talking about is so much like toshi that it's unlikely to be anyone else
>>
>>7694089
These books >>7673612 ?
>>
>>7694199
That's probably the closest I've seen but from what I can see on google image search he isn't better than toshi. I'm leaning towards it being a toshi book I haven't found yet but thanks for pointing this guy out. Definitely the closest so far outside toshi

I honestly don’t think it will be leaked.
1. It’s expensive. Twice the price of Japanese language version.
2. People who care about these things, probably don’t want to discourage NAFCA to continue translating the other books by leaking this one.

Anyone have character design book recommendations in the classic Capcom style?

Most character design books and courses I can find are for ArtStationslop

Note I'm looking for guides/courses not just artbooks, I already have those and I'm studying them daily
>>
>>7695235
Nope. I don't think anyone has ever wrote "How to Draw/Design Characters Capcom-Style". It's easy to say "do master studies" and emulate their style. Like what Naoki Saito advocates. Easier said than done.
Looks like they use copic (and acrylic) like a lot of older video game artworks. Perhaps aim to emulate that first.

An update from the team

annas-archive.li/blog, 2025-08-17

We are still alive and kicking. In recent weeks we’ve seen increased attacks on our mission. We are taking steps to harden our infrastructure and operational security. The work of securing humanity’s legacy is worth fighting for.

Since we started in 2022, we have liberated tens of millions of books, scientific articles, magazines, newspapers, and more. These are now forever protected from destruction by natural disasters, wars, budget cuts, and other catastrophes, thanks to everyone who helps with torrenting.

Anna’s Archive itself has organized some of the largest scrapes: we acquired tens of millions of files from IA Controlled Digital Lending, HathiTrust, DuXiu, and many more.

We have also scraped and published the largest book metadata collections in history: WorldCat, Google Books, and others. With this we’ll be able to identify which books are still missing from our collections, and prioritize saving the rarest ones.

Much thanks to all of our volunteers for making these projects happen.

This kind of attitude over an honest mistake due to a cursory glance at a search result is why instead of sharing after buying, I will just keep the contents to myself. Have fun ordering the book, it's down to 3k yen on amazon, but youll need to pay shipping and customs.
