Welcome to /INT/ - Intermediate Draw!
Please post in this thread if you're above /beg/ beginner but not yet ready for the big boys' club in the advanced draw thread.

Try to reflect upon your art and what you could improve upon. Be self-critical!

---

the Dunning-Kruger Effect:
Dunning-Kruger effect, in psychology, is a cognitive bias whereby people with limited knowledge or competence in a given intellectual or social domain greatly overestimate their own knowledge or competence in that domain relative to objective criteria or to the performance of their peers or of people in general.

Essentially, the Dunning Kruger effect explains why incompetent people are unable to see that they’re incompetent.

I saw your uncolored drawing in the last thread and have been looking for this. Nicely done.

Who is it? (Not saying it's not a good likeness, I just haven't seen her before.)
>>
>>7661410
She has a cute face and lively eyes, but you should double-check that the centerline of her nasal dorsum follows on properly from that of her glabella-radix area: currently, the shading in the middle of her upper face makes it look as if the features in question were misaligned.

As a tip, consider that the glabella-radix area is essentially a trapezoidal/triangular prism (of varying dimensions and depth), with the edges of its frontal plane linking the inner corners of the eyebrows with the nasal bridge:

Apart from that, since being cautious doesn't hurt, I would also recommend that you flip your canvas, and then proceed to rotate it until the face of your character is more or less in an upright position: that way, it will be easier for you to correct any other potential asymmetries that might have gone unnoticed.

Lastly, I suggest that you reduce somewhat the thickness of your character's neck: besides making her head look smaller, it doesn't really appear to match her body type.

Maybe invest more intention and time into the tree? The ends of the branches seem like second thought. The back base of it as well. Like it's not actually rooted into the ground there.
The darkness and saturation of the red at his foot, maybe you could have the same or similar value at his very low back/bum? Might also help him feel more rooted and weighed down to the ground.
>>7662599
I had no idea he passed. RIP.
The shape of his face is nice and evocative but maybe his eyes are a tad soft in expression/shape.
Beautiful colours.
>>
>>7662599
This looks great but I think the glasses contribute to that lesbian look the other anon was talking about. I saw pics of him with circular shades on. I think you should’ve done that since it gives him more character. Dope signature and colors

I really hope so. It totally killed my motivation today and I'm tempted to go back to the usual color method I've been doing but I know I won't improve if I keep doing it my way. Real pain in the ass, wish there were properly tutorials for this kind of technique beyond speedpaints.
>>
>>7667826
When doing Grisaille, I usually add an overlay layer at 15% opacity to make the colors more vibrant. Even with this, I just don't feel like I have enough control over the colors so I rarely use it.

Good likeness, but the spotty values hurt the appeal and make it look more like something Napoleon Dynamite would draw.

the pronounced lines of the mouth and around it are the only thing holding it back

I'd keep linework lighter or try to remove lines as much as possible where they aren't needed to suggest the form so it doesn't looks a "harsh" in terms of wrinkles and high contrast dark lines
it would also make the lips feel "softer" if that makes sense

I am done studying hands for now. Didn't get much useful critiques, so I will say this, not satisfied with either of these hands. The left one I could not figure out the index finger, and likely should have tried tracing it first to figure out the joint placements, but with this perspective it looks very odd and short compared to the middle finger.

Right one the thumb doesn't feel right at all, though I will admit I started to get a feel for how to construct the fingers better, but still not very good.

Wasn't getting many critiques in general, and does this even belong in /int/? I think I'm between /beg/ and /int/ to be honest.
>>
>>7669693
Think you struggled so much with the likeness in the left hand because you made the pointer nail far far larger and down the finger itself than it is in the ref.
I find it's easier to draw hands from odd foreshorten perspectives etc. if you draw the nails (exactly as they're shown) first. Easier to imagine building up the finger that way.
>>
>>7669693
if you want to truly understand hands, study them from life and not just from photographs.as for crit, I think you should study the hand bones and muscles. Maybe look into Bridgman or other artists that draw hands well and study their approach as well

But then you look at the hands and feet and they are drawn so well!
You need to study some more artists you like and hone in on that alternative style you are chasing - personally think the big heads could work - i found this pick earlier today that may work as inspiration for the body types you are going for
The frog looks like it's from banjo kazooie

Good job. Just revise the dimensions of the furthermost rim/lens of his glasses so that it's a bit longer and more vertically narrow (making sure that it remains parallel with the other one, while keeping in mind the foreshortening), and round up slightly the overall volume of the hair (so that his cranium feels somewhat taller), and your character bust will be pretty much flawless.

Same poster, after drawing hands I decided to move onto skulls, and since I drew two skulls (same reference as you can see) back in 2023, I decided to try again to see how much I've developed.

Note, I didn't do ANY tracing, but I did sometimes overlap the sketch with the reference to check for accuracy. In the future I'll try not to do this so much (and for the cheekbones I did try to figure them out based on their shape and perspective, which I think I pulled off okay enough?)

The main thing I can tell is while the late 23' one is 3d formed and not a symbol like the first 23' one, it looks quite inaccurate and nothing like the skull. However the new one actually does look like the skull reference, so I consider this a success...and yeah the shading I am not too sure about but I think considering my lack of experience it looks okay enough?

Also probably helps I had decent sleep for once last night which may have helped.
>>
>>7672775
Well, the rendering is shitty for starters there are many layers missing of brown, yellow maybe a little red in some places rather than just 2/3 tones of gray.
I'd say combine the first 2023 attempt with the 2025 attempt and apply more roundness to certain places of the skull like the forehead and the back because your style or whatever has become too straight as in too many sharp or rectangular lines that you need to round up a little to get a better form.
>Note, I didn't do ANY tracing
Who cares retard, use it as a tool to get a better understanding of shapes specially when you're doing digital.
I guess it's a better effort this time, but you still have ways to go.
>>
>>7672790
Sucks your attitude is is kinda shitty but I appreciate some of the advice.

I wasn't going for colours though, you seem to be assuming I wanted to colour and shade but that wasn't my intention at all.
>>
>>7672793
>I wasn't going for colours though
I thought so, but I couldn't tell if it was a practice or a finished piece because of your skill. Either way it'll be nice for you to finish your work for a change. Take that into consideration.
>>
>>7672800
Does it matter? It's a sketch. I could have gone for nicer looking lines but maybe one off my next skulls will have lines and look neater.

Oh, mind sharing some of your work? I'm curious to see it.

The best technique I was ever told is just to start with the shadow shapes first. All shadows, cast and form, all one tone, all hard edges. Then from here start to soften the edges on form shadows, work back and forth to darken the core shadows, ambient occlusion, and lighten for reflected light.

But by starting with just the shadow shapes, you are making sure that you have a defined light and dark side to avoid the issue in the pic, and you are also thinking about the design of the shadows as you would design anything else, rather than just letting them happen, where things become muddled and unsure.

Using social media for popular contest is so 2011. In 2025, it is a dead internet, there's no real people, people are brainwash, programmed to be sterile, content is sterile because the people are sterile, fast and sloppy, that's why tiktok thrive on doomscroll.exe. if you are still trying to farm on sterile npc, I'm afraid they won't be interested. Think of them as people on fentanyl but for the mind. Even some of artists are like this. They are afraid to lose audience.
>>
>>7675179
popularity is realy relative when talking about the internet, what i want is a niche audience that likes what i do, not to be loved by normies that will stab me in the back for saying something they didn't like
>>
>>7675196
You won't be able to find them. They control the algorithm, Google, youtube, even chatgpt. You will have to find them via other means.
>>
>>7675199
what would you recommend then
>>
>>7675205
Destroy the algorithm, slay the dragon, save the girl, save the world. Pretty impossible, but if there's a will there's a way. For all adventures, you need a quest, set your goals, realistic goals, and pick your fights carefully, you can't slay the dragon with a swing, unless you got really lucky, and for a better success rate, get a team who can contribute. Art itself is already an noble pursuit, you are now carrying the cross at the same time. So you got to be really strong. Whatever the fuck that means. Good luck, may the gods and the muses guide you.
>>

oh bother! go suck a cock ya wanker

>>7675222
Why you tripping nigger?
>set goals

you have to network and mingle, not just be a faceless artdropper. interact with other artists, especially lower tiers, help them out and encourage them. be the bigger, better person and you'll get your niche. you have to work for stuff you want, just like you did for your drawings, right? nothing comes from nothing, unless youre some fetishist guy but i guess those guys also network about their fetishes (fetishi?). be outgoing if no ones coming to you. its easier on the net

Question for artists. Do you guys just look for ideas for ocs, do you get inspired by other ocs or characters and apply the "Good artists copy, great artists steal" method or do ideas pop in your head for your work?

I have a boat load of ocs and art from other artists and plan on using them for ideas. Might even plan on looking for more artists to practice or "steal ideas".

Where did it all go so wrong?
>>
maybe im actually a permabeg.

I'm the same guy who was posting the gohan vs broly picture last week.

i get to a point like this with my drawings where i know that the oozaru looks like shit, and needs an outline, and shading, and i know that i could clean up vegeta's hair, and tien's pants, and i should fix the shenron's antler's and make the frame fit into the rest of the picture instead of being so weird, but i think the reason i don't want to do those things is because from 3 feet away you won't be able to tell the difference anyway. and to do all that would be optimistically like 3 hours of work,

so i guess my question is, do you think you need to finish a drawing completely until you can't improve it anymore, or do you think you should set a time limit and that you shouldn't polish a turd?

should i go back and fix up goku's hair and vegeta's eyes, and draw the fins on the dragon's back better, or just fucking stop wasting my life on this drawing?

serious question.
>>
>>7695103
these fixes won't take you three hours the longer you keep powering through to do them. do not end up in wip hell where youre just constantly making new wips so you never have to draw or finish anything that challenges you.

No, it will. And I think 3 is optimistic. Might be longer. That's if I don't get any new ideas and if gimo doesn't suddenly decide to merge layers for no reason.

I'm surprised nobody said don't polish the turd. Ic has really changed in the few years I stepped away.
>>

I honestly like it. It's campy but fun. What I'd do is go back and work on each thing piece by peace to fully flesh it out/finish it.
And forgive me, I don't know their names but have the bald gentleman in the front match the colour palette and light source/shadow of the one behind him. Same for the bust up at the front. As is it feels a bit copy paste like different art pulled and pasted together.
Collages like this can look really cool but I think the colouring on those two specifically are too different than the rest of the idea/painting.
It would bring harmony.

a little dark imo. I would locate a light source directly in the middle in the back of the photo, far back in the center of the bamboo. Then add highlights to the backside of Bardock and the motorcycle (and the bamboo) to brighten in up and tie it together with the lighting on Gine.
>>
>>7702305
I forgot to mention. Consider adding more saturated colors to Burdock and the motorcycle. If you look at your reference, all the subjects are brighter/more saturated while the backgrounds are mostly monochromatic. It makes them pop and draws your eye to them. Looks like you already had the right idea with Gine.

What’s up /ic/? First time back to digital painting in nearly a year long hiatus. New to iPad, just testing out as many brushes as possible in procreate to get used to the software.
Any thoughts on the process outlined in pic related? I basically laid in a sketch with a transparent square brush, copied and smudged that, then used a the original layer with a subtract blending mode to get the old guy’s face looking grim. Next I used some opaque painterly brushes to add some warmth back to the head, finally reintroducing the original image underneath to darken it. Any level of finishing you guys think looks better than the others?

Beg didn't help, I was hoping I could get some advice on how to make this more legible. I feel that it's hard to decipher at first glance and I don't know what to do about it.

the knights other leg is missing for one and his body is either too small or his head too big, dunno what youre going for. it might fit the style of this stupid horse gambling crap better. either way, there is size issues with the knight but i do like the motive. you should polish this turd

Thanks, I appreciate it. I couldn't tell after staring at it for too long.

yeah, its better to let a drawing rest for some minutes, get a snack or drink and then look at it again after 10-15 minutes or so.

Besides the scratchy lines- The arm is bent which means that he should be more bicep dominant (bigger than the tricep) Speaking of the bicep, why is the deltoid inserting in the middle of it? the insertion is behind the bicep near the brachialis- but in your drawing's angle you wouldn't see it, it would just wrap around pic rel (Ignore the red looking up brachialis to make sure I spelled it right and this came up, which kind of looks like your pose)

Honestly, once you got the theory right. What's the actual best way to click/traing on shading and lighting shapes/surfaces? I'm getting filtered by this not on a theoritical level but more on a pratical one. I exclusively draw with pencils and I'm starting to think that I should get into digital painting for this or buy some charcoal pencils.

coming well together, senpai. it does look better and teh grill being bigger makes sense in a comical way since she represents a horse, right? good job.

Thanks, but this was the extent of what I could do. I especially just guessed for how to handle texturing the armor. If you have any resources or further additions, I'd be glad to see.

check some materials, like earlier berserk style might fit your shading type. keeping it simple works rather well sometimes. efficient.
