It can be either one. Different people have different genetics, and will have small variations between their musculature and other things. Everyone at least has an 8 segments in their abdominis rectus, but the top two segments aren't always as well defined, and the pectorals may even overlap them to some degree. Some people may even have a split in the lower two segments, resulting in a 10 pack.

Can someone explain to me how the uppermost abs (the ones right below the pectorals) work relative to the ribcage? That's one of those details that's always bugged the shit out of me
