I feel like I have discovered a new level of impostor syndrome
>grinding hard to try to get close to the level of classic Capcom artists
>skill finally reaching a level where I'm somewhat satisfied with what I can draw
>finally try to create full original illustrations, characters, situations, locations etc myself
>realize my work is nothing but a derivation of an already existing derivation of real life
>the Capcom artists were all mingling IRL, shooting the shit, sharing experiences, drawing things they saw outside in real life 90s/00s Japan, drawing from media, culture, movies, entertainment from the time etc
>all I can do is draw from their own derivations since I live in bumfuck nowhere with no culture or artists, or draw from online references which is soulless and missing the context
>my work will at best be a pale imitation that lacks the understanding and context that was the actual essence of classic Capcom art

I feel like this is an insurmountable problem in my creative output no matter how good I get

>impostor syndrome
Cope. What you're saying here is just true.
>>

Well yeah that's why I said "a new level", in this case it's insurmountable because it's true
>>

Hmm, is not like everyone on this board has told you to learn actual art instead of copying jap cartoons?
>>
>>7703946
I don't see how that's in any way related to the issue
>>
>>7703905
Even Flyover USA has made great art, or Flyover Russia, whatever shithole you are in, there's art to be made from your surroundings. You can render your surroundings with your love of Chinese cartoons and hopefully make something novel in the process.
>>
What's the point of learning to draw if you're just gonna be derivative. Just use AI at that point.
>>
>>7703905
Why not just draw a scene from an old video game or something?
Like a pixel art game, but throw in some jaunty angles
Not everything needs to be from "real-life" just draw stuff you enjoy drawing

Well, even those Capcom artists were inspired by artists that came before them, as well as by their peers. There's nothing wrong with taking something from them and making it your own. It's true that you don't live in 1990s Japan, but neither does anyone. That has passed. Looking on the bright side: What would be the point of doing what they already did so well? It's natural to want to emulate the art that you like, but eventually you'll want to bring something new into the world.

>drawing from media, culture, movies, entertainment from the time etc
You can literally do this? I read interviews where some of them talked about having to go to bookstores to find references. The difference is now you just google "gun" and you see guns vs having to buy a book

>drawing things they saw outside in real life 90s/00s Japan
You can do this but modern day wherever you live.

>mingling IRL, shooting the shit, sharing experiences
Again you can do this on here, discord, twitter, etc.

Incredibly depressing post.

Geez dude, cheer up, that's actually a marketable niche, which is more than most artists have.

Kinda faggy, but I like to think of art as a conversation from our ancestors to us. Even if you're only conversing with the echoes of a time and place that can't be recreated I think you're still a part of that conversation and you're as much a brother of the Capcom artists as they were to each other. Stay strong, friend.

I feel like the issue stems from only using one source as inspiration. In order not to copy a style exactly, you must take inspiration from many other sources that you like! Only then will you have the confidence to create something entirely new :>

That's exactly how you will be viewed. Imitators that try to copy the style exactly just come off as Walmart versions of the real thing. You're supposed to borrow, not wholesale rip them off. Even the Capcom artists are distinct from one another but they all drew from the same well of inspiration - from each other and mostly Akiman. There's one artist that draws almost identically to Araki but I can't help but think of them as fake Araki.

This.
Go outisde OP and show us your reality in a stylized version.
Try to notice stuff and situations not often respresented in art.

If you're not ready yet, just take some pictures incognito and use them as reference.
