I've been dipping in and out of drawing for years since being into it as a kid but I really want to get back into it. I've always wanted to do caricatures/portraits like pic related but they've always eluded me.
I understand the basic concept of building things off of shapes but other than that what should I practice to get to something like pic related? I now understand a portrait doesn't have to be 1:1 and is more of an interpretation but the process and final product escapes me.

is that really it? I've always struggled with people and even getting shapes right. I figured most artists have an understanding of anatomy first or something similar

dumb broad didn't even draw her eyes looking in the right direction.

seriously, this is kind of how I draw now and it took a lot of thinking to get that result.

great work anon. I'd love to draw like either one of you. I agree that it is a matter of artistic interpretation though and like I said doesn't have to be 1:1.
Any exercises you recommend or things you studied to get where you are? I think I'm too worried about my sketchbook being perfect

Working caricature artist here.

Tom Richmond's Mad Art of Caricature is probably the most important book you'll find for a foundation on how to draw caricatures for a living. It's a very solid start and will give you all the fundamentals to make sure you can get hired anywhere. Another good title to look into afterward is Rejects: The Extreme Art of Retail Caricature, which examines the other side of doing caricatures for a living, and dealing with rejection.

Now actually applying is a different story, working the streets has its own set of problems, and most of the jobs are basically theme park retail, or doing gig work at fair, all different stories. So is not getting stabbed in the head multiple times with a pair of scissors by a disgruntled coworker at Universal Studios.

It was joke that's why I said "Seriously" (it was supposed to say "but seriously" idk what happened there)

Oh I redrew this 7-10 times while taking notes and simplifying the forms until I could get the shapes correct (and still fucked up the eyes). It's not in a good perfect sketchbook it's on a small pad which made me have to kind of stipple to get the face... God that face was so hard I'm happy I at least got that out.

The trick is all shadow shapes (after measuring the proportions) if you want, you could fire up any image editing software and lower the threshold to see the major blocks of shadow and light (Or squint your eyes) then plan how you will lay them out.
