I personally think it's good to have a sustainable amount of time. If you have a day where you really can't or don't want to draw, then that's OK, don't draw. But if you never want to draw, then maybe evaluate whether drawing is really the hobby you want or if you'd be happier doing something else.

>How many hours should I dedicate a day to drawing, buddies?
As much as you can and want to really. Forcing yourself to draw more than you want is a quick way to hate art. Start low, like an hour or two, but with the option to do more if you feel like it, and if you like drawing and have a consistent schedule (daily, every two days whatever), you will likely naturally start increasing it to as much as you can reasonably manage
>How many do (You) ?
I work full time so I only really manage 2-4 hours on weekdays. More than that on weekends, up to 8-9 hours sometimes.
I did draw a lot less and not even daily for over a month due to burnout (only partially related to drawing) but I'm slowly getting more time in again

>Is Hogarth a good book for beginners?
You should try it, it might stick better than others, he's giving you a system of shortcuts to build your figure out of and then fill in the details. Hogarth dynamic poses book focuses on odd angles and might fit you better than simplistic intro of Loomis. If you can go through Loomis' book and learn basic proportion canons and then move onto Bridgman/Hogarth for more dynamic poses I think you'll be fine.

Just remember that these are guidelines, doesn't mean that you're going to draw like any of them, but more to steer your process through the systems they suggest

I think in terms of gesture, 1 and 2 roughly captures the reference. My advice for this is nothing really new, just break down the figure into simple geometrical shapes for the head, torso and pelvis. Because you seem to struggle with the proportions, you should focus on observing the relative distances of those big masses. Observe carefully, that's the most important thing.

for drawing people, right now im just doing rhythms (proko), and it doesnt look amazing...
when i eventually get to topics like anatomy & other methods, does it make a huge difference in making proportional & accurate drawings of people easier?

like, if feels like there are prob some general rules with drawing people and once i learn it itll click better,
>>
>>7716825
I just recently started studying anatomy, so take what I say with a huge grain of salt, but the first thing I did was train my observation skills doing bargue plates and shit like that. That will give you a really good eye for proportions and accuracy. You don't need to understand anatomy/form/perspective to capture it. Once you can break anything into shapes and contours and get basic proportions/measuring down, then you can start studying gesture and forms.

I think gesture is kind of a beg trap and is more valuable for intermediate/advanced artists than us plebs.

762 KB

>>7716834
so this is the kind of rhythm drawing proko is having us do
are you saying it kind of a trap? like, should i not spend too much time on it if what i did was sufficient enough?
>>
>>7716839
I mean, I did the whole rhythms thing for a bit too, starting with the seals and then did quick gestures as a warm up for a few weeks. I personally got very little out of it given the time investment.

It really depends on your skill level.

If you can already draw people accurately with proper anatomy, but your poses are stiff then gesture is what you need. The problem with most begs isn't that their poses are stiff, it's that they can't capture basic forms or see the problems with their proportions.

If you want to train your observation, you need to do pretty strict observational drawing, ie trying to copy something as accurately as possible, so you can check your work. If you want to capture form, you need to practice primitives, basic perspective, and manipulating them in 3d space. Then you work your way up to capturing complex forms. I think both these exercises are infinitely more valuable for begs.

Unironically yes. Ones mental state can affect your ability to focus and therefor output. Same thing with like having a fever that makes you unable to function properly
>reminds me of crossdressing as a grade schooler with hot topic clothes and sending pics to men like two to three times my age look
could be why you are depressed but what do I know,

I'm depressed bc I had to quit an entry level job that I couldn't handle due to mental illness
makes me feel like a failure, plus my art being bad makes me feel worse
it's good to know that depression does affect it so I can have some scapegoat for my lack of ability

I wouldn't call it a scapegoat. You just gotta find a way to make art that works for you and your situation. In tandem you should try and improve your well-being even if it seems hard to do so in the moment.

Let me clarify, I am a stupid retarded piece of shit.
Even this task gives me trouble. I can't simplify the bodies and keep skewering shit to the side (my figures are slanted despite everything being on flat plane).
Should I just keep doing this? Or is there something more basic I'm supposed to be doing to learn? I already draw cubes and circles and shit daily.
I just want to get good

Unnecessarily rude. Loomis and like minded mentors are precisely difficult in the beginning because you don´t know how the knowledge in question will improve your art, especially if you´re low beg.

>>
>>7717163
They kind of train different things, so you can do both. Drawing from references helps improve your observation skills. Construction improves your spacial reasoning and ability to describe form with or without reference. Basic perspective study and cube/cylinders wouldn't be a bad idea to get a handle on early, but spamming reference drawing is fine until your observation skills are at the point where you can look at something and comfortably produce a sketch pretty accurately.

thanks for the critique.
Yes my proportions are very off. Always have been, but currently they especially are, because I have a phase where I have fun and go with my vibe. I ought to try for accuracy again, else I entrench bad habits.

Anatomy wise I have no idea whatsoever. I make muscles up, though I have some idea about the neck/chest/arm area due to looking at pictures that some machines at the gym have. This is where I see most potential for improvement. I promise you: I'll spend half an hour a day on anatomy study alone... for a month. Let's see where it gets me.

And don't worry about telling me to stop: nobody here could make me quit. I'm hooked and I'm in this racket for life, whether I post here, elsewhere, or nowhere. I'll always be drawing.

>so I just keep doing this between drawing thinsg I actually want?
Always focus on drawing what you want. Getting stuck only practicing doesn´t work for art imo, it's not a test or a 9 to 5. Practicing and study must serve only you to make your art more fun, interesting and realized, otherwise why even fucking bother. I'm beg as shit but once I understood it's just about doing what you want and having fun doing it and getting better = more fun drawing you can get a lot more mileage out of exercises like these. So ask yourself what you want to draw, and if Loomis would help you, because if your just doing loomis fo the sake of loomis you might as well do something else for now.

I changed back from my Huion to my smaller wacom because I spent two weeks in trad and got annoyed when I came back to holding that hyper big kamvas 13 pen. Why are these so big anyway?
Also, I think one of reasons that I feel bad at drawing hands is that I'm starting to think the real ones ugly, or at least I don't feel attracted to them really. Idk man. I want to make cute hands but I'm still so unsafe at structure...

you're right, that's what i noticed.. but even the model kinda looks like that, still i get this mistake a lot - legs too short. even in this drawing i redraw the legs several times to make them longer. This is one of the reasons why my proportions and perspective is always off, I don't know how to make the torso, arms and pelvis as a cohesive structure. I think once I make it a lot more intuitive then I'll have a stronger fundamentals.

I don't understand the anatomy of elbows, it's annoying, while the happy ones on Twitter draw beautifully and receive praise from themselves and others

>4th grade math problem scribbled on page for seemingly no reason
i used krita's measure tool on head from reference and it was ~84 to 115 pixels s0 8/12 or 4-6 or 2/3
so the proportions of head is roughly 2 width to 3 height
i then looked up in the internet and turns out it was true but i figured it out myself first
also pyw
>eyedropper selected even though he only draws in pure black
when you take a pic with share x you need to press ctrl and it happens to be eyedropper in krita
so yeah pyw

also next pic

Some anons recommended me to use Tumblr and its surprisingly cozy but am I meant to make up a #mynameblog as a tag in order to make it easy to always filter my original uploads from reblogs? I just want a tidy blog to a degree for my work
>>
>>7719112
If your blog name isn't too generic that would work. It may have changed since I last used it but something to keep in mind is that only the first five tags you use will show up in search results so if you want people to see your posts make sure to use your search tags first and then add any organizational tags after.
