I think it looks good on those popcorn tins that get sold around Christmas.

supposedly even he hated his cabins and tried to branch out multiple times but failed and had to keep churning out cabins because mormons ate it up as a depiction of mormon heaven
>>
I like him too, but there is no need to curse

>Thomas Kinkade
He's a business guy that did painting on the side while his friend, James Gurney, is a true artist that do business on the side.
>They're on the extremes of picrel
You can learn a lot about commercial art, business principles just from reading Kinkade's bio.
That guy knew how to make bank off art unlike the vast majority of starving artists, hell even digital artists on Patreon can learn something from him.
>>
>>7716752
Kinkade's book on sketching he did with James Gurney is actually good. That was before he tried to trademark his name tho.
>>
>>7716987
Is there a QRD of his principles anywhere? I can't afford his bio.

I found The Thomas Kinkade Story: A 20 Year Chronology of the Artist
looks like it's about 25 bucks on amazon

So I asked myself, why don't I like Kincade's work? Like, what is the actual, definable reason? None of that "it's chintzy" or "it's campy" stuff.

And I realized, the lighting makes no sense. Just random, glowing, hyper-saturated light coming from nowhere. Everything is blown out and simultaneously over-saturated in a way that's impossible in nature.

You could do the exact same type of material and give it that sense of realism by just fixing the lighting and saturation, and it would be improved 300%.
>>
>>7721314
If you want realism, take up photography.
>>
>>7716752
I'm of similar mindset. It's Cozy Kitsch - people act like that's a bad thing. Not every painting or piece of art has to be deep, or have any meaning at all.

Fuck, how can you say that meaningless abstract paintings such as "Who's afraid of red, yellow and blue" are art, but then proceed bash meaningless but aesthetically and technically impressive paintings?
Just say they're not to your taste and move on.

There's a difference between being realistic and being convincing. Kincade's work is neither.
>>
>>7721318
Ken Rockwell has you covered
>>
>>7716752
it's supposed to be relaxing but to me it looks frenetic, every area of the painting looks like a focal point, it's like he tried to cram as much shit as possible onto the canvas with no rhyme or reason
>>
>>7721284
Thanks anon.
>>
>>7716752
The perspective is fucked. Try it: Find the horizon line (use the lines from the left side of the cabin), then see how small those deer are when projected to the door of the cabin. Just using my eye, I can see the ducks are not sized properly, either. It gives the whole thing an uncanny feeling. Even the boulders don't seem to get larger as they come closer to the viewer, although I suppose there's a certain ambiguity there because you could say the closer boulders are just smaller.
>>
>>7721667
I think the perspective is intentionally stylized, but yeah, it's strange.

>>
I love how much he makes fine artists seethe.
>>
>>7721680
I thought this was a parody, but no. Kincade's studio and Disney have been partnered for decades kek.
>>
>>7721677
Yeah, I'm sure Kinkade knew what he was doing. It adds to the dreamlike quality of the image, for better or worse.
>>
>>7721314
I'd say, composition generally is cluttered. It's the (quasi?)realistic landscape equivalent to overdesigned deviant art anime characters, but with a greater degree pf technical skill applied. If you like it, you like it.

Narrator: The point of the analogy is that you shouldn't eat too many Kincade paintings.
