Does anybody else have a hard time calling themselves an "artist"? I mean art is my main source of income and all but I feel like I don't deserve to be called an artist unless I'm actually renowned or one of the greats.

It also irks me when beginners call themselves an artist, like in my mind goes bitch you haven't earned that title yet. Anybody else like this or am I just thinking like an asshole?
>>
titles that you have to earn:
>Medical Doctor
>Professional Engineer
>Doctor of Philosophy
>Pilot
>OP, Gaylord Supreme

titles that you don't have to earn:
>Artist
>>
>>7717094
I wont call myself an artist until i can paint like they did in academism
>>
You are an asshole. Everyone is an artist.
>>
>>7717094
You draw porn don't you
>>
>>7717094
"Artist" doesn't mean anything but the word makes people feel good so who cares?
>>
>>7717200
Words mean things.
My pronouns are xe/yer/pem
>>
>>7717209
It doesn't mean anything in the sense that "Artist" doesn't really tell you anything about a person in 2025.
>>
i'll stick to larpist till i made it. bigly. gives yourself room for improvement either way
>>
>>7717211
...because too many people misuse the word artist, yes.
>>
>>7717214
artist doesnt translate to fine arts or good at arts or drawing. its a general term for creation or acquired skill
>>
>>7717228
Artists make art.

Just because you draw, doesn't mean you do art.
>>
>>7717094
>Oh your an artist? Give me your soundcloud
>>
>>7717094
>It also irks me when beginners call themselves an artist, like in my mind goes bitch you haven't earned that title yet

I'm a beginner and probably already earned it more than you, pro
>>
In an alternate timeline maybe there'd be some organizing entity to create a standardized set of requirements that separates amateurs from pros and pros from master artists. I dunno if art as an aesthetic form ever had guilds to protect trade secrets anywhere in history. The problem is there's no reliable way to turn someone into an artist so there are no learning secrets to protect. The old trade secrets would have been things like paint formulations and tricks like using a camera obscura. It's all out there now so what's to protect? I dunno maybe I took this off into a completely irrelevant tangent.
>>
Artists are doormats who would rather let retards shit all over their craft than have enough backbone to ever say 'no'.
>>
>>7717229
so taped banan equals art, drawing doesnt? lol
>>
>>7717267
>pros
see, you have no fucking idea of the words you use. professional ONLY means its your profession. a fucking bricklayer is a professional, doesnt equal to him making quality houses. some calarts faggot doing flash cartoons for money is a professional despite only being capable of making noodle limb crap
>>
>>7717275
How does that have anything to do with what I wrote?
>>
>>7717094
I find "artist" easier than "illustrator". I also actively dislike the reductivism of the word "content", so I will never refer to myself as a "content creator".
>>
>>7717094
sometimes I just sit there and laugh at how drawing is the only thing I do, I'm a "professional" artist... yet I can't fucking draw. My life is so absurd.
>>
>>7717094
I wont call myself an artist until i reach the same skill level of those who got me into drawing.

Nope.
How you present yourself and how other people perceive you is a childish hang up. That shit stops mattering when you get older.
>>

Only true if
>are close to death, and thus see the world for what it is
>live with unthreatened finances
>cannot imagine negative consequences (because of low brain pwoer)
>>
I draw cartoons. Im a cartoonist
>>
>>7720912
No it's not, hasn't the age of influencers made you realize reality is perception? We live in the world of exaggerating your strengths and underplaying your weaknesses. Try it out, you may feel like a fraud but people don't care enough and will take you at face value. Obviously their are some exceptions like having a tangible certificate that shows that you are credible (doctor/lawyer/whatever) even then look at Nick Rikieta, people took him as a credible lawyer, coming to him for good legal advice then you learn he's a shit lawyer who never seen the inside of a court room with a client.
>>
>>7717094
Bad artists exist.
>>
I call myself an artist when people ask what I do. I have to qualify it with "I'm good though."
>>
>>7718729
yet you still wear clothes when you go outside, curious
>>
>say I'm an artist
>they ask to see my art
>all I have is porn of video game and anime girls
what do I do?
>>
>>7717094

I'm a 25 year old telemarketer. I draw on the side to make extra money. I really don't give a shit if someone calls me "artist" or "apples" or "oranges".

I don't like the term 'artist', I call myself a creator or storyteller as that feels more appropriate for me as I refuse to associate with artists that are part of the contemporary art movement, I see artists as sadistic assholes that get their thrills from fucking with people's emotions and cause them to get angry for no good reason beside, "I MADE YOU REACT! SEE NOW THIS IS ART!" bullshit argument to justify their inflated budgets but get smug as they get funding from the elites. They love the Dada movement yet to fail to realize that the movement they care so much was hijacked by the rich elites and genrified to the point we reached unnecessary nihilism, so no. I don't call myself an artist and neither should you.
>>
dont worry OP you just have standards and a healthy bit of shame, nothing wrong with that
>>
>>7717094
>Does anybody else have a hard time calling themselves an "artist"?
It's an overused word. People use it as if anyone who draws or paints is an artist, even if you are shit compared to really talented people.
>>
I just tell people I'm a graphic designer, since that's how I pay my bills.
>>
>>7717197
Seconded.
OP - you can't lead with 'art is my main source of income' and not elaborate.
I'd be pissed if I were a proficient land/seascaper and some sea shell gluing trog was claiming merit - but as the term 'artist' is as broad as the brush you're gonna have to provide some details bud.
