I don't understand how some artists have such good line quality. This comic was made traditionally, with India ink and a brush pen. Even with ctrl-Z and brush stabilizer, I can't come close to these lines. Do you guys have tips for improving line quality?
>>7718476You need a steady hand. I think the way you position yourself to the paper is also important. That's why they do this on a table. If the paper is right in front of your hand, it's hard to draw clean lines. It needs to be a bit angled, so you can apply enough pressure and rest your hand.
Also, it's all about the slow, longer lines. It's easy to make fast lines clean, but you need to master the slow lines if you want to draw really clean. Fast lines for shorter lines, and slow lines for longer lines. The slow lines are the ones which require a really steady hand and a clear mind.
>>7718476The Watson Guptil pen and ink book has pages of dexterity exercises like going from thick-to-thin, thin-to-thick, diagonal, etc.. One of the finest pen and ink instruction books there is.
>>7718476I suck at this too. Simply takes practice.
>>7718487I think you might be right. I'll set up an angled drawing board and see if it helps.>>7718489You hit on my problem. My fast lines are okay, so I tend to just ctrl-Z my fast lines until I get something that's not shit. I can't draw a slow steady line.>>7718495Haven't read this, but I know of his work. I do the common warmups, but I could try more specific line exercises.
>>7718476>Even with ctrl-Z and brush stabilizerreal life has infinite resolution. also you're probably gripping the pen too hard and not drawing from the shoulder/elbow
>>7718508>I can't draw a slow steady line.Yea, I know this from myself. You need to practice it a lot and find your pace for them. It's really difficult, because when you concentrate on getting the line right, you become nervous, and the line will be shit. There needs to be the right amount of pressure and the right amount of speed to get it right.
>>7718476The pages are drawn and inked at a much larger size and then shrunk down. I think they're drawn at double or triple the printed size?So work at a bigger size, and then shrink it down.
>>7718489If I draw slow my art looks like it was drawn in an earthquake. Its over for me.
>>7718548Idk, I guess it depends on your style. I think there are also people who only draw with fast lines, and simply connect a bunch of smaller fast lines together to create long lines.I personally need to get better at slower lines tho. That's one of my problems which would help me get better.
Comics are typically drawn on pages far bigger than what they're printed on. It's basically the same as those artists constantly working at 800% to get insane levels of detail on everything
