>>7722176I’ve been studying 3D sculpting around 2023–2024 but my results have been abysmal and I’ve felt demotivated since November last year. I never had any reason to learn other than to have a normal hobby outside of video games, but i don't wanna complain about childhood and regrets, i have a question:Do you need to learn to draw to do 3d sculpting? I've been struggling alot with anatomy and stylized shapes, when i did the picasso exercise for symbol drawing in school back when i was underage, i was so frustrated i felt like i was being trolled, i've never had help from anyone and never expected one in my friend circle so i kept trying until i gave up during covid and learned 3d blender instead, but i still struggle with similar issues in sculpting form.
How am I supposed to have fun with drawing when I have to draw backgrounds? Drawing a tile floor in perspective is just not very fun, ok?
The "just blind copy bridgman twice" thing is just a meme, right? I'm doing it now as an ultra beg and I'm fucking up everything. There has to be a step I'm missing, right?
>>7722251It is a meme, but it kind of works. Some people suggest doing the second round of copying by memory, but I've never tried that so I don't know how effective it is. The truth is drawing/copying anything for long periods of time will be effective to various degrees, so you'll probably get something out of it
>>7722251It's a meme yeah. You won't get much from studying anatomy as a "ultra beg". Plus Bridgman is bit harder to learn from since his sketches are quite loose and the instruction is a bit lacking. I would only recommend it once you are decent at figure drawing and have at least basic anatomy knowledge.
>>7722176How am I supposed to transition from learning perspective to actually drawing figures and characters in perspective? I can draw either things separately, but I'm completely unable to combine them
>>7722262Try to draw it freehand/intuitively but place the horizon line at least to keep vanishing points in mind. If things go wrong, then break it down analytically, using the perspective knowledge that you have learned. If there's knowledge or techniques you are missing, look in books or video courses for them. When you are looking for specific answers, it's easier to find the knowledge you need.Specifically for drawing figures in perspective, drawing the ground plane they are standing on is useful. And wrapping lines around their forms to see how their limbs are in perspective. And drawing a box around them too see where they sit in space.Tools like perspective grids or 3D mock ups in Blender can help too.
How the hell do I draw characters accurately. I make sure to use references and even draw over said ref but it never turns out right.
>>7722313You use the refs to draw the character you want accurately in your style. Your goal is not to draw them 1:1 in the og artist's style. Pic related is famous anime characters drawn in Simspons' style.

Any tips for maintaining symmetry in faces? I know it doesn't need to be 1:1 but I feel like I spend way too much time flipping back and forth trying to make them somewhat even.
>>7722708That's something you figure out on your own buddy boi. It's like a nen user asking "What should my Hatsu be?" we don't even know what kind of art you make! watch other people and look at their workflowMy ideal one is >Thumbnails (finding basic composition)>sketching>Finding the value hierarchy >Finding the color hierarchy>line art>flat colors>renderingAll while checking if what I want to communicate is still there. But I get undisciplined sometimes and want to rock and roll so I make a sketch paint from there and spend more time trying to correct mistakes I made from rushing the beginning more than anything.

How do you draw/render a good back when everyone's back seems to look wildly different IRL? When trying to look at real-world reference photos I can barely tell muscles apart from each other when they're small, it looks like everyone had noticeably different should blade shapes and definition, and it seems like when the back gets muscular enough it just hides everything that has to do with the shoulder blades entirely, and there's a bunch of overlap between groups

I'm a self taught gamedev and I need an advice on software picking for 2D stuff. I used to draw with Krita a few years ago and got back to drawing recently with pencils and paper but now I want to try digital painting and since (as a gamedev) I'm planning on doing texture work/photo editing and stuff like that (for textures), I was wondering if I was better off learning Photoshop right now or stick to Krita?
>>7722180It’s not REQUIRED for 3D modeling, but knowing how to draw does help a lot.
>>7722180Absolutely yes. Anatomy for example is mandatory for you to learn as well as shape blocking if you want your sculpts to look good.
>>7723720Personally I don't want to depend on anything that is paid and also Adobe may or may not be training AI with your art, so my advice is to stick to Krita and/or Inkscape

Best way to mask my artstyle? My friends browse 4chan but I want to draw weird porn on /d/ without them knowing it's me.
does anyone know the name of this artist who used to post on /ic/?they got really really good at figures, and mostly paint portraits, primarily of pretty white females with fantasy/galaxy themes, and iridescent sheen to everything. they're popular on tumblr/social media now I believe.I could be completely wrong but I think their name started with something like sydney or samantha.

Are coomers self-aware as to how ridiculous their porn looks?
i've tried taking figure drawing classes at my local junior college and most of the class is very short speed-draws of a live figure, sometimes with weird challenges like continuous line or blind drawing. it feels very backwards to me, shouldn't i be focusing on how the human body works rather than these weird challenges? or is learning to draw on hard mode first the whole point of drawing? i'm a very technical-minded person so the looseness of figure drawing is hard for me to get. i think i'll stick with 3DCG.
>>7722216Simplify backgrounds when they're not the focus. For example, just draw the tiles fully under the character's feet and imply the rest. If you look at many modern artists' backgrounds they are no more than carefully placed blobs of paint. Also your drawing software probably has a perspective guide tool.

What's the etiquette for using other people's clothing designs in fanart? How do you give "credit" properly if that makes sense?>see cool clothes design in fanart of character>want to draw her in the same clothes>don't want people to think I created the designIs the simple fact of me being later and drawing the same character already imply a sort of "tradition" and paying honor to the previous art that's clear without words?
>>7725387You can mention the source of the design.
>>7725387Don't botherEveryone is copying eachother, no one actually gives a shit about credits (unless it's AI for some reason, I guess). Don't guilt yourself into thinking you need to be a good boy, because you're just shooting yourself in the foot for no reason.
>>7725390How do you do this without being annoying/cringe or trying to generate false engagement? It's a Japanese artist, I can speak in JP but don't want to bother them if it makes sense.
>>7725397I think the Western conception of IP/credit is overrated and a lot of inspiration/copying is organic and clear but it feels wrong to just copy something I specifically liked so much and people think I created it.
>>7725398Stop creating problems in your heads. No artist is going to be mad for being credited for their design other artist was inspired to use.You don't have to mention them if you are such a socially anxious retard. >>7726529The same reason people self-insert themselves to Donal Duck in Donald Duck stories while Mickey Mouse is more of idealistic hero arch type. We are drawn in to characters with vices we identify with. Donald and Pepe are not perfect, they have their own shortcomings and they are universal. Same with Goofy, same with Watson compared to Sherlock Holmes. We don't self-insert as Superman or Batman, they are the heroes and they are too perfect. We do however self-insert to early Simpsons' Homer, Garfield any other Average Joe stereotype because they feel more real, more imperfect.

Are there books that focus on how to design ornate costumes? The clothes rather than overall character design or anatomy. Does anyone know any perspective grids for paperbros? I know you can use basically anything in CSP or Photoshop, but since I draw mainly for myself and on 11x17 paper I was kind of picturing a few plastic sheet perspective grids that you can just put underneath your drawing page to block out the perspective for a particular scene or drawing. I was thinking to just go into CSP (you can do it all for free iirc) and use the tools to create a few large images, basically like 6 or 7 different perspectives (worm eye, bird eye, 1 point center/left/right, etc) and seeing if I could have it printed but I'm not sure, maybe if the can print on acetate or something.

>>7729476That image is journalism-tier. That is, the person who made it probably didn't understand what they were trying to represent.Your skin allows light to penetrate, and red light penetrates further than blue. Your skin also scatters this penetrating light. You are correct that blood reflects red light, but it also absorbs a small amount. So what happens here is the red light penetrates to the depth of the vessel, scattering as it does. This scattering at depth means that the blood in the vessel has many opportunities to absorb some of this red light. So compared to the surrounding flesh, the skin with vessels beneath redirect less red light back to your eye. As we always see color "in context", vessels at a certain depth appear bluish. The above is my own poor regurgitation of :Why do veins appear blue? A new look at an old question by Alwin Kienie. I often get hung up on the idea that I'll be "learning wrong" (because I'm retarded). What I planned on doing was copying artists I like, only picking a few at first. And hopefully get a feel for drawing. I also planned on supplementing this with a few book studies, like on perspective or Vilppu because I like what I've seen of him. Like, copy, study a little, and try to reinforce what I studied by copying. That kind of process. That makes sense, right? Am I missing anything? I'm pretty bad at drawing right now, and I'd definitely need to work on my proportions a lot.
>>7733460You're thinking about this too hard. You're going to get stuck the second something doesn't go according to plan, which is pretty much immediately.Draw, find an issue, fix the issue, draw again. That's all.
Does anyone know how often I should post on Instagram or Twitter so that I don't have to rush my drawings but at the same time don't get shadowbanned?Once a week? What advice can you give me? I want to focus on practicing but I don't want to leave my social media accounts inactive in case I come back
is it possible to have AI give you exercises, to fully understand an art software?
>>7733464Yeah, you're probably right. I do overthink things a lot
>>7733554Have you tried asking it?
>>7733471>What advice can you give me?Instead of using algorithm based social media sites and treating them as your only watering hole, use actual art sites where people can see your art as long as they search the tags and you've tagged your works with the same tags. For example in Pixiv, Deviant Art and NewGrounds users can use just that. So when I post new work and it attracts new users, they also check my past works and engage with them building up my overall engagement and notority which leads to certain profile audiences to see more my stuff as they get featured in their home feed from the raised attention. Then you promote your algorithm based social media accounts there, which leads surge of new profiles picking you up in Instagram and Twitter and the sites' algorithm learns what's the target audience for your profile and posts and starts pushing you more to the relevant audience.
I want to learn how to colour well. What are my best options? Seems like digital might be the way to go but I despise adobe. I’ve got a 3rd gen IPad Air. I have some chartpak markers but they just leave a pool of ink at the end of every stroke. I just started drawing with pencils and then I ink over it on a separate page. Also if anyone knows what kind of film to use for animation that’d be great, nitrocellulose films are hard to find and expensive as fuck.

Ok so i am literally pre-beg. I've been practicing circles, boxes and lines for the last week, 1 hour per day.But i have some fineliner pens lying around. You guys think i should learn pencil first or can i jump to ink medium? Cus what i like is cartoon and anime so i am thinking pencil would be kinda useless to me...

>>7734671No but also yes. Most jobs don't give a shit about degrees. Freelance especially. But, industry stuff (games, movies) have specific workflows that you might want to go to school to pick up. I got some questions:What are the social media sites to create if one wants to get a following nowadays? How does one derive fun from the drawing experience even when failing at drawing?
Anyone got any tips for drawing fish?
>>7734625I'm also pre-beg, I started with fineliners with the drawabox course, but it's hard to do searching lines and sketch with fineliner. Now I'm doing the proko course. Also colored pencil are way easier to get attractive line quality with, using graphite pencils like normal HB my pressure control is totally fucked, dunno if it's the same with anyone else
Do I need to learn pencil pressure control or can I just use a like 4h when I need light marks and a 4b when I need darkHB is pissing me off trying to get it consistently what I want it
>>7734773You're not really supposed to do searching lines with the fineliners. You pick a starting and ending point for your stroke, visualize the curve (or straight), and draw it in a single fluid motion.
>>7734907Yeah I know that. But drawing from imagination without doing searching lines is really fucking hard
>>7734909Well that's because you haven't practiced it, dumbo
>>7734904It's a good skill to have so it wouldn't hurt to learn it. But you can get away with switching pencils instead. Getting good with 2 or 3 would be a good compromise. How do you retain what you study? I've been going for 3-6 hours per day for half a year now and I remember maybe around 10% of what I studied. I'm so sick of grinding fundies.
Can someone recommend a ink course for a absolute ultra beginner who doesnt even know the proper way to hold a pen?I thought about proko's but his are on pencils and i am not a fan.
is it bad to trace art so you can learn how they drew it? I'm trying to draw a character in a weird perspective that I've never done before and I feel like the only way to do is by physically tracing over the reference to help me understand it betterI'm just wondering if this is a bad habit or if I should just keep trying to eyeball it
>>7736019I don't recommend tracing the finished pic but what might help you is to bring the finished pic to your canvas and reverse-engineer it. Lower the pic's opacity and mark the head, eye levels, joints, torso and limb for you and see how the og artist has angled and constructed the pic,
>>7736025I didn't mean trace it and keep it in the drawing. I was thinking more of tracing it then keeping the trace as a reference and trying to eyeball the trace, if that makes sense
>>7736028The finished trace only helps you see the finished silhoutte and that doesn't help you. What would help you is to study how the og actual constructed the pic and executed the lines and why. You want simple solution to complicated problem. If you want to trace it and feel you gain something from it, by all means do it. You don't need our permission to do it. If you want affirmative feedback for your idea even if it's fake, just say so and I can pretend to like your idea and how it will totally help you.
>>7736032hmm okay I'll try your first suggestion and see how that goes
I'm working on a set of logos or whatever for my site. I like this, but this isn't enough for a logo. I thought adding some mushrooms to the bottom right might be a good idea, but I still don't really have any ideas for a 'logo' per se.
>>7736568Another one I liked. I through some stuff in the style of Ernst Haeckel could work? Some colorful shroomage.
>>7736568>>7736569I also spent some time leaning into the 'pacific' theme with an octopus. If anyone has any cool ideas I'd be really appreciative. I think I have the icea for the style/theme of the site down, but am still trying to decide what to do for the 'logo'. This image would also look cool if the octopus was colored. I'd go red like a giant pacific octopus. potential for that to be the logo/mascot or something.
Once I'm done with my warm ups and line practice, what I should do next? Just draw what I want?
how in the FUCK you get comissions as a beginner in social media? Been trying to get the ball rolling since the start of the year but cant find any clients neither on twitter or reddit what do?
>>7736721My comms come from Deviant Art and Pixiv. If you are beginner, you using algorithm based sites like Twitter and Instagram leaves you at mercy of algorithm and since you have no idea how to play the algorithm, you will be posting to the void hoping algorithm suddenly picks you up.Use your brains. How do people find new artist and art? What makes them want to commission particular artist? If you can't answer these simple questions, you will stay in your rut.
Should i be learning how to draw basic shapes(lines, circles, elipses) from different angles or should i just tilt my board?

I've been following a guide to the T and here's how it goes;>Have the drawing (png)>Export as .tif using Krita>Open .tif as a Raw Header in Audacity with A-Log encoding>Fuck up the audio and mess with it a bunch>Export the file as .raw with A-Log encoding>Change file extension from .raw to .tif>Cannot open file in Krita (I should be able to open the file in Krita)>It says it cannot parse the file format with no other detailsDoes anybody here with the expertise on digital art know what might be wrong with what I'm doing or potential problems? It seems inexplicable since Krita can handle .tif files fine and nothing online indicates that this SHOULDN'T be working. Can't upload a picture since I'm photobanned for some reasonWhat do?

>>7737924just keep your spine straight for some time and they'll go away. Probably depends on the person how fast
>>7737897Ah, gotcha. Wasn't sure if by tilting you meant like, changing the roll angle of your board instead of the yaw.I personally work with keyboard shortcuts to flip and rotate the canvas, that way any line that I have to draw can be prepped for the stroke direction that I'm used to which is left to right. I feel like if I had a bigger working space I'd have more room to do right to left strokes though, and I would say if nothing else it's good to practice strokes you're not familiar with to make your workflow go quicker
>>7737921Seems nice. Will read it.I guess i also need to actually draw. I know i am shit at it but you cant improve if all you do is exercises...The fear of failure is real.

Fellas, like absolute begginer here. Like 1 week in.But... how do i deal with hand occluding where my line is going with pencils?Like, i am drawing a line from left to right but i cant contrl where it ends cause i cant see it!Which is why i've been trying to do it right to left but it feels awkward asf
>>7739674Ghost where you want your line to go beforehand, and then draw it blind.
>>7739674Hello anon, I'm another pre-beg here but i can show you the waythe only way you are going to get better is practice, there are quite a lot of ways you can go about it practicing lines and I would recommend getting a ruler and doing a line. after that try and trace it without the ruler. do this every single day before you start to draw as a warm up and you will get the hand of it later. The ghosted method that other anon metioned is good too! But remember you have to put some variety with your lines. Try to do a couple flat ones and then slowly try different angles. after that try doing S curves and C curves with the same method
>>7730388speed painting/drawing is really meant for drawing gestures, capturing flowing lines, and focusing on the defining shapes of a figure. If you want to learn anatomy, you need to do longer sketches practicing proportions, muscle groups, different body parts, etc and actually focus on those specific things so you can retain the info and build your internal library>>7730514some artist use a bigger brush for sketches to keep things vague and work out details later, painters use the biggest brush they can manage for a specific task for brush economy. But alot of it comes down to taste. You might be overthinking it, use whichever brush is comfortable to you
>>7737668I cant recommend any specific tutorials or anything, by I can give you a quick cypher i keep in mind for line weights:>thicker lines on the start of a curve, thinner at the apex of the curve>thicker/thinner line at corners/plane changes>thicker lines at line intersections>lines facing light source are thinner, lines in shadowed area are thicker; treat lines as value>use line weight to show depth, eg things in backround have thinner linesnow go look at a bunch of manga/comics/whatever, and youll see alot of these guidelines being used
>>7737261not sure if I understand, but it sounds like an issue with foreshortening and shape manipulation. When dealing with weird angles, the shapes youre drawing for the body should be the exact same, just at a different angle.

>>7741984the head and then the direction/motion of the spine. build off that like a lego set.

Does it make sense to get better at drawing something the more you draw it but if you were any good then you should have nailed it on the first try right only people who suck waste time drawing it wrong the first times I hate myself I wish I was dead
>>7742125Drawing is very hard, most people can't even draw a straight line or a decent circle after multiple attempts. People can only nail stuff the 'first time' if they've already spent 100s of hours drawing similar things.

>>7742326I don't recommend fill. You would need to have it go over few pixels to fill the spots. I lay the flat myself, it's faster for me.For brush size, yes find a good ratio in canvas size and brush size. For example I use around 30-50 pixel sized pencil brush for sketchin in 8000x8000 and 20-30 pixel sized g pen for inking. And yeah you are expected to go config the particular brush to your liking. Click the brush icon on top of the canvas to set it how you like, like smoothness and so on. For inking you can consider using the dynamic brush tool from the left instead of regular brush.Experiment and see what works best for you
>>7742336>and 20-30 pixel sized g pen for inkingcanvas size 5000x5000 for inkingSize of canvas depends on your toaster. I recommend using bigger than smaller.

>>7744913How do you draw straight lines traditionally? With a ruler. Your drawing program has line tool.If you weren't trolling then check if your drawing tablet is straight in the middle in front of your screen and correct. Wear paper on top of the tablet for better traction. It sounds you are very new to digital drawing so get accustomed with the tablet by browins internet with it instead of using mouse. When you train new tool, it's good to practice using it with something you are already familiar with. Also config the tablet sensitivity settings so they work for you instead of you adapting to them.
>>7744918My issue is the screen is so smooth the line easily veers off.Rulers? I dont use a ruler, xrawabox says i need to know how to draw straight lines... not perfectly but still.
>>7744920i dont know who your eceleb shittuber is but using a tablet is not the same as trad drawing and shouldnt be equated to it. one is drawing on paper the other is plastic. one has latency the other doesnt unless you have parkinsons. digital drawing will never equate to traditional in any way nor will it replace it. they are two separate things with separate skill

How the fuck do I learn about drawing mechanical parts in a non-overwhelming way for retards (artists), their functionality and real life counterparts for easier ideationMore importantly how do I differentiate between the usual purely aesthetic "greebles" and something that's actually meant to serve some functionLike in the picrel for example, what are those circled things meant to be? Vents? Knobs? Modular ports? This is just a single example but I hope you get my issueA book/course name would be helpful, I'm probably overthinking this way too much but I sometimes chat with artists who seem to have a much better grasp on this and they're by no means well versed in hard engineering, maybe industrial design at bestIt just feels like theres this inbetween liminal space of knowledge between art and functionality that I could be tapping into, but I'm not
