I don’t think that tangents always harm readability or appeal. They definitely do in a lot of cases, but I see people calling an artist unskilled for tangents that don’t really degrade the experience of their art. Also, this idea that creature/character design decisions always have to come from some anatomical truth is stupid. Of course mastering animal and human anatomy is necessary for artists, but I see retard anatomy spergs trying to say that designs need to have the muscle and bone connections sorted out on all designs, even at the expense of appeal. That’s how you get souless shit like the Lion King remake.
>>7725678go blog about it
>>7725678I agree but the tangent on the face in the right example does harm the flow of the face imo; it's good to know where it matters and where it doesn't
>>7725733This is just what came up on google images when I typed “tangents in art”. The actual examples I’m thinking of come from xitter, and I refuse to go back there. Tangents can and often do harm art, but not always
>>7725678>I don’t think that tangents always harm readability or appeal.Oh you're definitely right, the example in your image, I'm not sure if there's a single tangent there that harms the drawing? Maybe the nose, but that's if you're being finicky.Though I think tangents should be warned against and taught, because they're a common enough thing, and look awful often enough, that an artist should know to look out for them as one of the reasons a drawing isn't working. So being overly cautious of them is preferable to not caring at all. Also, tangents can sometimes be used to make the drawing more impactful - you'll often see the hair drawn as a tangent with the shape of the face, but that usually looks great, so it can give an extra graphic punch to the look of a drawing. As for a 'rule' I hate?... Ah, being too adherent to 'character design' tricks.>"Oh your character is mature and sturdy person? Make them square!">"Oh your character is dangerous? Make the triangular and pointy!">"Oh, they're the comedic relief? Make the circular!"Same with use of colour and such. Don't get me wrong, these tricks obviously work, but I think they do so in an exaggerated cartoonish way, and shouldn't be applied all the time, and you can make a character feel safe, or dangerous, or comedic with just the way your draw the expression of their eyes, for example.Another problem I have with it, is it can make characters feel a little stylistically disjointed, as if each character is almost a different race of creature - you'll have one really square character, and one really circular character, and I know we all come in different shapes in sizes in the real world, but not quite like how they like to sometimes design these characters when they go overboard with this stuff.
>>7725678oh cool, another overloaded term
>>7725751Sometimes it gets to the point of “you need to alternate between big shapes and small shapes going vertically”Fucking Pixar and Disney’s “rules for storytelling”. At a certain point, you need to stop turning subjective experiences into a science.
>>7725678tangents really are just about overlap. having shapes overlap eachother helps give the drawing depth. when they all converge together then it's hard to tell what's overlapping eachother.
>>7725678Tangents are important for composition if your doing films other wise they're not that big a deal and really just depends on what aspect of a drawing having a tangent ruins like how the face is better on the avoid side because the nose tangent was ruining it. I think a lot of art and animation "rules" are really just like this anon>>7725811 says it's turning subjective experiences into science
>>7725858>>7725811Some art teachers will never be real artists no matter how much technical skill they have.I’ve legitimately heard some teacher on Proko say that they value technical competence over expression. Like, the purpose of art to them was showing off raw skill as if photos can’t do it better. They only allow themselves to express through the constraints if technical knowledge.
Tangents can’t happen IRL so they shouldn’t happen in your work unless you are shit
>>7726877they can in photography, aren't forced perspective photos taking advantage of tangents to create an optical illusion
>>7726877You’re saying that art can’t defy reality? That sucks. That’s more of a reason to include tangents in art
>>7726877Yes they can
>>7725678Yeah also never mirror your work if you don't want to, or look at your drawings in grayscale, or sketch out lines of action or do any of those other bullshit tricks professionals pedal onlineLiterally every industry artist and illustration book says to pay attention to those things, but they're all probably wrong and you're right I think
>>7726877>Tangents can’t happen IRLGo outside.Fuck, just look away from your computer screen for a few moments.
