Is Berserk still an example of peak manga art nowadays? Personally, I think the art is not as impressive as it used to be.
>>
>>7726532
so many mangas now have less detail/more sketchiness for the sake of pushing chapters out. berserk still looks beautiful because it feels like someone cared a lot more
>>
fuck that looks bad
>>
>>7726532
I fucking hate Berserk’s art. It’s so ugly.
>>
>>7726532
berserk is very high effort which makes it appealing because you can visually see the time that was put into it, but god is the approach to almost everything in that manga to just add more and more hatching n textures instead of having a coherent value scheme or any amount of interesting visual design

It was always slop that appealed to normies who are easily impressed by cross-hatching

Miura died in 2021. His assistants + Holyland mangaka have been running it for a while now.
>>
>>7726634
Time is moving so fast that felt like 2023 when he died.

unironically dragon ball, because its a manga with movement and good paneling. berserk is mostly just detailed, but less of a manga. one piece is the worst of both worlds, it isnt artistic anymore and its cluttered with crap all over the pages, hard to figure out whats going on in the first place so much you dont even read it anymore, you just skim through it.

berserk isnt even on top of seinen regarding good art, theres many more, its just popular

I think Miura has shown that he can do excellent work, but he was always inconsistent. Sometimes his figures look quite stiff and with questionable anatomy that stands out because of it. But other times he was able draw 99% of other mangakas under the table. I think he liked sinking time into some panels more than others, particularly environmental vistas, high energy character movement and ugly monster reveals, or things related. He didn't seem to put as much dillogence into characters in repose unless they were particularly cute and vulnerable.
Was he the best techincal artist? The greatest at using composition and panneling? I'd say no, but je did show a lot of passion, a unique flavour and constantly improved his skill, even if the end result was uneven. Sad thing was how sterile it felt when he went digital, then he died just as he was coming to make use of it a little better.

It used to have so many amazing pages and panels. Maybe it's because I have gotten used to it, but all the hatching doesn't look good at all anymore. It's over the top.

I don't know what it is, but Gaga's Berserk looks so "shiny". It is the overuse of screentones?
>>
>>7726532
Berserk was never an example of peak manga art. It was just edgy and the european-fantasy setting appealed to westerners
>>
>>7726758
What do you recommend instead? Make pajeets white?
>>
Younger generations don't know this but no one in the 90's thought berserk's art looked great. We appreciated it's amateurish almost "polished turd" charm as it fitted really well with it's dark atmosphere. Basically we saw berserk the same way young folks see attack on Titan today.
Back then we all agreed the god of manga was otomo (Akira).
Tastes change with time

>no one in the 90's thought berserk's art looked great
Yeah Miura had pretty wonky art back then, it was the conviction arc where he hit his stride... then lost it again switching to digital. I always hated how he drew Casca like a dumb bimbo.

Did he actually tell them how he wanted to story to go and end? Are they going to take it to completion?
>>
>>7726812
overrated. if he didnt die, hed have been in jail for pedo shota shit on his pc eventually like galko mangaka and others. his non-berserk stuff is basically arrest worthy and you know he has worse on his harddrive. but his berserk stuff starts strong and got really fucking shit in his lolicon idolmaster delay days. most of his art has poor proportions and composition. the most memorable pages and designs are all stolen, too. just classical art pieces from actual masters he traces over or drops 1:1 on the page and because weebs are literally 65 iq drooling retards with no life, no education, no knowledge, they think the artist actually came up with this shit and is some amazing artist. his hatching is also very weak and often scribbly/does not conform to perspective or form or shape. just endless lines for sake of it and hope no one notices.
>>
>>7726788
Yep, part of the charm early on was how rough it was. He definitely became more skilled from Golden Age onward tho.
His paneling and some of the spreads are incredible too, hill of swords is up there in there in terms of paneling and fight choregraphy, and he made up for this skill gap with awesome monster designs, worldbuilding, and writing.
There are mangaka now who can match one or two of the things Miura excelled at, but no one has been able to do as much as Miura.
>>
>>7726758
>>7726826
I feel like Gaga doesn't shade things dark enough in some scenes and opts to just lay down screen tones that make things blend together sometimes.
I think this has been a problem since around Fantasia. I feel like the use of multiple tones and shading makes things look noisy compared to something like Conviction.
>>7726746 Here there a lot more restraint on shading and the tones are dark and used to make Skull Knight stand out.
I don't think Gaga's quality is worse than when Miura was doing it digital, but maybe things would read better if the outlines were a little bolder and toning down the tones.
>>
>>7726532
>still an example of peak manga art
It never was. It's detailed, yes, but it's not extremely well drawn. There are much better manga artists. Berserk just appeals to normies because it's equally immature.
>>
>>7726934

You don't need to reply to that nerd, he hasn't read Berserk and he thinks he's being cool being a contrarian.
>>
The older pages didn't go anywhere y'know.

>>7726880
>hed have been in jail for pedo shota shit on his pc[...] his non-berserk stuff is basically arrest worthy
Not even remotely. Isn't that obviously from the way, y'know, he drew the story and it was published and he was completely fine?
You realize he lived in the country where it isn't illegal at all to draw children getting fucked in every hole imaginable. His stuff is all pretty softcore as far as lolicon stuff goes. So no, he was never in any legal danger.
>>
>>7726734
i'm sure you've drawn something that looks amazing, and then other days you've drawn pure shit, it happens to anyone, the difference between us and Miura is that he had to actually finish his work and send it off to be printed.
>>
>>7726532

>>
>>7726532
it was never as good artistically as the best manga, people just regarded it higher than it objectively was due to content
that said, it's probably in top 3% of contemporary manga anyway
>>
>>7726532
Berserk is the embodiment of a sperg too passionate for his own good. Was too autistic and obsessed with perfectionism that he just never produced anything from getting burnt out and died without completing a series that would've been significantly better if it ended back in the 90s. Artwork is still really good.

Yes but Miura Berserk was already kinda whack, I think he was losing his eyesight.

>Mori was the only one who knew the ending of Berserk. This is why he collaborated with Studio Gaga, which was the manga production studio of Berserk. Together, they are now working on bringing Berserk to fruition with the help of the ending that was originally planned by Miura before he passed away.

>Kentaro Miura was Convinced to Give Berserk a Happy Ending Because He Couldn’t “let such a long grim story end with a grim ending”

anyways rip in peace, i was really looking forward to see his new shota manga
>>
>>7731543
I was looking forward to his mecha stuff personally

You gotta love the fact that the people that talk the most shit about art are also the ones that can't draw for shit either.
>>
>>7726597
I remember coming onto this site as a kid decades ago and seeing people throw around berserk memes. Just because it's retro and being rediscovered by the new gen and that pisses you off because it reminds you of the passage of time doesn't mean it was always normie fodder. 4chan culture as a whole is being repurposed by the newgen, does that mean Patrick Bateman was always cringe? That looksmaxxing wasn't a hilarious and retarded meme? Give me a break
>>
>>7731413
Is everything that has happened since Miura's death part of the story he had planned or are they making shit up?
>>
>>7726532
My favorite art is the one during the Lost Children arc. The current art looks like shit imo, hatching everywhere in a way that just looks hairy for no reason.

The fact we got anywhere in the ballpark of miura is a Godsend.
Miura had a rough transition into digital but did eventually get a little better over time. You can see in his final chapter 364, that the anatomy is rough and stiff and the new artist seems to have fallen into the same trap (though I think the heavy etching with a light line to make a kind of grey mask feels like a better fit than Miura's digital mark making over half tones).

Of course berserk's art peaked with trad miura inking before boat arc, but man, I think we got lucky to get anything anywhere near that with Mori and his team

>>
It went downhill after Miura's death.

I do not even like this Miura panel that much, but compare the shapes, anatomy and shading between both.

The shape of the nose, eyes and mouth doesn't not even resemble Guts.
You see, he has a pointy nose and a slight slanted nose bridge in the original manga, his eye is big and slanted, his mouth is wide and firm, thinner and sharp edged.
That shape language is lost in the continuation.

Studio Gaga has also this bad tendency of overusing grey tones which makes the illustration lose all the contrast and it's evenly distributed.
To be completely honest, the use of value tones look pretty bland as well, seem like amateurish to me.

Not to mention the paneling and creative use of the medium...there's not enough interesting panels, the only ones who look ok are those which are referenced from Miura's drawings...

It's a shame that the Berserk continuation is like this.
>>
>>7733309
The zoomer thinks in porn opportunity costs. Every distraction from gooning has to have SIGNIFICANT returns to justify doing that activity instead of gooning.
>>
>>7731543
By reading the continuation it's clear that Mori didn't know sh*t AND is clearly inventing a lot of things that didn't need to.

A little time before dying, Miura has talked about the next chapters going to focus on Skull Knight and Guts, probably he would make Guts separate from the group and go to Falconia.

He also hinted at the Bakiraka hideout in the East uniting with Rickert and having more or less the same goal.

Instead of developing these goals, Mori suddenly made the Bakiraka hideout a bullsh*t capital with a Kushan ruler, and has completely forgotten about Skull Knight.
Then he proceed making Guts a unrecognizable coward that didn't even remember Casca (but he remembers the rape horse!) until the last chapter (after 18 chapters that Casca was taken hostage).

So he know nothing OR he is intentionally milking the franchise to win money.

Either way, it's pretty obvious that he doesn't know sh*t.

Every comic artist has some weird panels here and there. It's something normal to happen.

I also don't think that anatomy matters that much if the rest is good. Who cares if a muscle looks wrong if the composition and the visual storytelling is high quality?
