I’m trying to get a better understanding of horror/shock/jumpscare style art. Stuff that makes your adrenaline rush, sends you into a fight or flight, or feel panicked.I’m wondering if anyone has any references or photos of what you feel is really terrifying or unsettling to you, I find it more fascinating to understand the things others find that make them feel uneasy or just completely uncomfortable. I’ll throw a handful of references in as well to get the thread rolling.Submissions can be photos, art, creepypastas, whatever it may be in between.Thank you in advance.

For me I've noticed that images that elicit dread for me look similar to predators or creatures that our ancestors may have feared. For example a lion.
You take its eyes, bump up the contrast slap it on some retard and mess with the liquify tool and you get some cheap creepypasta
>>7727154This is based thank you
>>7727153This one is really helpful, thank you. The lion reference is also really awesome and helps a ton too.
>>7727199>>7727200It doesn't have to be a photobash either. You can take the aspects/elements that we associate with predators, death, etc and add create them yourself. It's actually how I arrived at this conclusion. A lot of scary images have those white irises with dark bands around them and a dark pupil. Made me think, that's probably what our ancestors saw staring at them in the darkness as the light from the fires reflected back at them through the eyes of the wild cats.
>>7726675something that is not human pretending to be human in an attempt to trick you, the key is "in an attempt to trick you"

>>7726675There was a thread about this picrel a bit ago, and while I think it could have been a stronger overall image were it not drawn by a stupid furry, there's no doubt it's a masterful case of composition and lighting leading to that 'shock' moment.

>>7728764dayum thats good
>>7726675>Stuff that makes your adrenaline rush, sends you into a fight or flight, or feel panicked.Doesn't exist. The only time an artwork gave me a jumpscare was when I read that korean online manwha where the screen suddenly scrolled by itself. Usually drawings or paintings can't give you jumpscares. What people don't understand is that different genres and feelings have a bigger impact in different mediums and circumstances. A painting will never be able to be as scary as a horror movie for example. Jumpscares are just not the same without sound and moving pictures.
>>7728764Yeah, I have to admit that's pretty fucking good. It's extremely rare to actually get unsettled by images these days.
>>7729407>when I read that korean online manwha where the screen suddenly scrolled by itselfnow that's a blast from the past

stephen gammell is the all-timer.
>>7726675try studying horror media that was there before the interwebs so you dont end up making melodramatic slop that only zoomers would dind scary
>>7727154looks less like a cheap creepypasta and more like a screamer
>>7729421>>7729429That shit gave me a heart attack when I read it. Not gonna click this.
>>7728764This is actually insane.
>>7728764Now this is the good shit.
the thing is anon, you really get desensitized fast to it. I played a lot of horror vidya in my teen years and I struggle to find an image unnerving. A few days looking at pics like >>7728764 cuts you off the fear. I am still, tho, having anxiety at ambiance rather than monsters: I don't have an adrenaline rush but you can try playing the complex on steam, it's probably the only good backrooms game. The aesthetic can be very anxiety-inducing. Indie/low budget shit may be what you look for, check liminal land, the mandela catalogue, the kane pixels series on youtube. few jumpscares, but I found it relatively creative
>>7727153I like this one of a lion about to attack a photographer.
