what do /ic/ anons think of the scroll format of comics?
>>
>>7736804
It's phoneslop and should die and be forgotten
>>
it's unmitigated fucking garbage
>>
A vast majority of them suck and have terrible pacing due to their format, you have to scroll five miles to get to the next panel because of the unnecessary blank space between each one. With a regular comic page you can get a lot more creative with the layouts to control the flow and pacing and mood. Hell, even if the page layout was just different sized squares and rectangles on a page and not anything fancy like paneling can sometimes be I would much rather read through that than scrolling through each panel separately, it's much less of a pain in the ass.
>>
I hate it, but im testing the waters and trying my own. Its' a headache to panel. I assumed it would be easier, but its like playing guitar and then trying to play Guitar hero. Its similar, but you have to miss all these notes.
See if it does better than my regular comic.
I'll let you know

Perfectly fine as a means of optimising comics for the phone - it may suck, that's what the most readers are using, bit it is what it is, so you gotta optimise for the biggest audience.
The big issue is that the comics artists/authors are just exceptionally unambitious. Why are they comic artists, if not to be creative? I've oft said, and heard from others, that one of the biggest differences between western and eastern comics is that western comic artists will try doing wacky and zany thing with their comic layouts, usually to the detriment of readability... meanwhile vertical comics DESPERATELY need such creativity and innovation.
Everything about them feel so so cookie cutter, and by the numbers, visually. I don't think I've ever once thought that the page layout/reading experience was cool, and my praise has likely never been for more than singular panels (if even that, since let's face it, vertical comics are asset riddled shortcut fests).

But groaning aside, I've had very few 'bad' experiences reading vertical comics, like I've had with those some experimental comic layouts, or you oft get with amateur comics still trying to work out the 'flow' of a comic page. The biggest sin vertical comics make (in regards to reading experience) is having spaces waaaay too fucking big between panels to show the passage of time, to the point that you'll essentially get an entire blank page of just a white screen - if I don't know better, I'd say that's another lazy shortcut.

Visual artistry aside, vertical comics are creative dead zones. If manga has a cliche riddled overdone isekai slop problem, then vertical comics' (or rather, webtoons) entire industry is predicated on being slop peddlers. I'm unsure I've seen a single vertical comic that didn't reek from being so bog fucking standard in its plot and ideas - just a nugget of creativity, PLEASE!

Anyway, to summarise;
Vertical comic page layouts are good, but they play it way too safe in execution and writing.
>>
I feel like a genuinely good artist could do some really cool stuff with the vertical format but I have yet to see it

I recall there being a comic that became a bit viral because it had a gif and audio that would trigger once the comic had been scrolled down far enough, to make its last panel appropiately spOoOoky. More of these comics should play around with javascript and html to achieve an interesting result.
They shouldn't just be jpegs, they should be using the webpage itself as part of its medium.
>>
>>7736804
i dont get it. does the creator upload a non-scroller version for desktop? or does it just awkwardly sit in the corner of the page
>>
>>7736898
thats too much work

It's fucking garbage

Just stick with book format
Dividing panels and filling it with white space is the worst idea ever
>>
>>7736804
>look at webcomic
>white void everywhere
What's wrong with Koreans? How the fuck is it supposed to make comics more readable?

>scroll format of comics?
Isn't that format called manhwa, webtoon? Marvel call it "infinity comics" but that's because capeshit is bullshit.
Anyway there's nothing to think about, it's just colored manga reformated to be read on mobile, plenty of manga were converted to that format in the last years like Akatsuki no Yona and Fullmetal Alchemist and plenty of webtoons were converted to the manga format like Solo Leveling and True Beauty so they're just Asian comics.

A lot of weebs can't accept this tho despite websites like linemanga and comico being full of Japanese webtoons.

absolutely despise it

Drawing is a lot of work.
Adding a couple of events and triggers onto a webpage is hardly anything.
>>
>>7736953
hey man, don't exhaust yourself typing comments like that
>>
>>7736804
From majority of webtoons I see, they're just full of white space galore, random closeup shots with a few dialogue box to lead the eye and then after a few scrolls maybe you see some god damned scenes/illustrations
>>
>>7736853
This anon gets it

>>7736893
I don't know what you're talking about but on the eastern side I've seen numerous manhua/manhwas that I'll have to scroll past through a page of blank white with maybe a few dialogues or panels that doesn't add to the pacing / content. The example by OP is alright as it more follows the traditional yonkoma setup and payoff just in longer vertical layout.

Whoops my bad, I'm guessing you also mentioned the dead zones are for the eastern side. Yeah, those do grind my gears. If I have to scroll too much to get through their story, if it's not amazingly jawdropping art or story, I'm dropping it.
