anyone got experience drawing on public transportation?
im gonna have a big commute by train (1 hours back and forth) from now on and was thinking of getting a small samsung tablet to get some work done during that time

anyone else does this?
>>

Well you can do that. Even if you don't end up drawing you'd still have a decent mini tablet to watch movies on. I'd recommend 8" tablets because it's much more comfortable to hold in one hand around <400 grams
>>
>>7739818
Just get a small sketchbook.
>>
>>7739824
i need a tablet so I can work on the same project on multiple devices, tablet while commuting and pc at home
at least thats the plan
>>
>>7739818
It really depends on the train and how smooth the ride is. I've done it and it was nigh impossible to do any delicate lines. The train was rumbling and shaking too much.
It was alright for rough sketching and coming up with ideas though.
I had the most trouble adjusting my sleep schedule to daily, hour long commutes though, I had to commute 2 and a half hours every day. I love trains, but I hate getting up early and coming home late. I'm never doing that again, especially not that early.
>>
>>7739833
Get an A4 sketchbook and draw from life instead.

You don't need a tablet specifically for commuting.
Just admit you want a tablet for the sake of it, they're pretty cool. I have one, 0 regrets, I use it every day. Paper still wins and I still like to scan my paper drawings to work with them digitally because I'm too chickenshit to apply colours I may not be able to erase smoothly, but tablets are great too, especially for doodles and simple animation imo. Sucks to use a tablet in the sunlight though, gotta make sure the screen isn't shiny, the light settings need to be high, it's heavier than paper...
Paper just wins. But get a tablet anyway, because they're cool and you want one. It's especially great on vacation and if you're commuting to university, it's great for note-taking as well, especially when you can take screenshots of presentations and write your notes directly onto those presentations. If you want to type, get a good keyboard though, I made the mistake of getting a shitty free keyboard deal with an overly expensive keyboard with fancy shotcuts that can't be turned off and whenever I 10 finger type, it just switches languages or tries to switch devices and all that nonsense because those geniuses thought making shift+any letter would be a great shortcut because surely you don't need to write that many capital letters? I type in German, every sentence has several capital letters and those damn shortcuts get triggered every time and I can't turn them off. I bought a 5€ keyboard and it's so much better...
Anyway, get that tablet, don't let your dreams be dreams. But if you want to draw on it, maybe consider which drawing program you want to use on it beforehand. I found my best free option to be Krita, even though the app starts painfully slowly.

I have a moleskine notebook that's small enough to fit in my pocket and one those 4 color pens from bic what I do since I have a 2 hour commute into LA is I just sit there and just draw faces and of people who I think look interesting
>>
>>7739818
>anyone got experience drawing
uhhhh nope. Definitely not me
>>
>>7739946
so you're that faggot on the gold line
>>
>>7739883
I bought a tablet (iPad Pro with M2, and 8GB Ram) specifically for drawing while commuting and to be able to draw while travelling. And because I wanted to use Procreate.

It's not as good as a Wacom + Laptop or paper and I consider giving it back.
Am I missing something?
>>
>>7739985
>buying appleshit
Get an android device, idiot
>but muh procreate
You've been fed too many ads

>Am I missing something
Most people I know who bought tablets for drawing, whether with or without a screen ended up just going back to paper.
No, it's not as good as paper.

Never said that it'd be anywhere close to paper.
I haven't made much good artwork with any ios or android tablets. The apple pen is heavy and sucks and while my samsung galaxy tab s6 lite has a better pen imo, the freely available apps aren't great either. I tried out different apps and the best ones are either full of ads you have to pay to remove or have monthly subscription costs like Clip Studio Paint. I bet there's some way to pirate it, but I didn't wanna look into it so I just got Krita. It works fine, but it took me a while to set up the work environment to suit my tastes because I just hate the default one.
What do you want to draw and work on anyway?
If your artwork involves any kind of thinking, I think tablets are great, I do the rough drafts of my comics on them (my samsung tablet came with a default note-taking app that worked alright for that, although I switched to jnotes). I also like to read art tutorial books on my tablet because it feels more natural than on pc.
But if you don't care about doing anything but drawing, don't do much planning and go in with custom brushes and super detailed lines or whatever, just use paper and draw digitally at home.
You could also try using a travel painting kit. If your train ride is smooth enough, maybe you won't make a mess.
>>
how the fuck do you draw while being jostled around by a train or bus
>>
>>7740129
trains don't jostle in first world countries, john aaron smith
>>
>>7740130
They do if you live in bumfuck nowhere in a poorly funded region of a first world country.
Intercontinental train rides are usually fine, but those are pricey af compared to the slow regional trains.
A lot of first world countries that aren't Japan had to deal with the car industry siphoning off funding for public trains which led to expensive privatised trains or just shitty, underfunded trains.
They thought they'd be saving so much money in Germany if they didn't bother with unfreezing the tracks every winter and now the costs of trying to rebuild things are astronomical compared to if we'd just practised basic maintenance. "Frugal" policies at their finest, costing us all more in the end.
>>
>>7739883
i literally DO need a table though, how else am I gonna work on the same projects as I do on my pc?
believe, I don't want a tablet, but if im gonna commute 2 hours a day, i have to try and make the best of it
>>
>>7739818
You will not be able to paint shit on public transport. I have a sketchbook and a pencil and make 1-5 minute sketches
I had something like this >>7740093 and that's OK if you plan on sitting somewhere specifically to draw. You will not be able to casually make a painting like James Gurney wants you to believe. If you are actually outside to do anything you won't accomplish more than a sketch.

literally the worst trains in europe
hop over the border to netherlands to see what not being poor looks like
>>
It’s not that bad. I made less mistakes drawing traditionally on a train than I did with digital.
>>
>>7740146
NTA but that's obviously not going to help Germanon's situation.
>>7740144
German here, I couldn't make it work because most train rides in the Ruhrgebiet are too crowded to do anything, and shit gets shaky. I'm prone to getting headaches, so I got filtered. When I saw individuals doing creative work, it was doodles at best, or a person very slowly and inefficiently working on a typeface in Procreate, making me wonder why the fuck they're not making actual vectors.

I prefer people-watching instead, though I have yet to doodle people. An example from Thursday, all within a 1m radius: A Balkan with coke nails and an itchy nose who wore brand clothes, an old Turkish couple seated 1m away from each other with the wife carrying stuff and the husband's phone ringing every 5min, a foreign woman boarding with her mentally handicapped teenage daughter who went "Hääää??" several times a minute, looked equally as bewildered by existence and would often stomp her feet, and the middle-aged German man leaving his seat, thereby revealing to be carrying a medieval sword in his backpack, its handle sticking out. The train was almost on schedule. That's way more fascinating than doomscrolling.
I've seen San Rio girls (male), a woman with the sort of body dysmorphia that made her pierce her face in grotesque ways, local football hooligans (esp. >Schalke), normies, you name it. Wish I had been doodling them or taking pictures.

>>

kek

>>7739818
shit can get shaky and you may not have any opportunity to sit or sit undisturbed
personally I carry a sketchbook and do very specific sketch studies, techniques, construction, composition that doesn't get useless or fucked up if things get unsteady
>>
I can't just randomly draw for fun, I need hours of setup and prep time and brainstorming to even get a topic worth exploring with sketches. I cannot simply draw spontaneously, only people with talent can do that.

that's what excuses will get you. If that anon doesn't want to draw that much, then he ought to just give up drawing.

hobo on tracks
>>
>>7741410
You've never been on a train that had to hit the emergency brakes before for whatever reason? You'd think it'd be a super rare occurrence but I somehow keep ending up on trains that do it, even in different countries.
>>
>>7741410
What's a train gonna do if someone jumps on the tracks? Especially if that person is already dead, there needs to be cleanup before the train can move on.
If it's a region with bad weather, that can also cause damage to the tracks.
Could be anything, really
