How the hell do you make this readable with only two tones? Obvious beg but this feels like im doing something wrong if I cant use lines
>>
Open in GIMP or photoshop or whatever.
Open the contrast / brightness tool.
Max the contrast. (This will result in black & white image.)
Fiddle with the brightness. (This will determine the tone at which the division between light and dark happens.)

I find the image is most readable when the brightness is quite low. Of course, you don't need to be true to the image. You can darken or lighten elements as you like to convey the forms. Still, working the brightness slider as described will give you some ideas.

2 values and no lines is a big simplification, so a lot of information will be lost. if the image is complex then it won't be readable with those limitations. it's a simple idea but actually quite hard to do well.
the purpose of this exercises it to teach you how to think in values and the big shapes. the design, balance and harmony of the big shapes is important.
unless you are specially going for a style with only two values, it's part of a process, where you add more values later. 3-4 values studies are a lot easier to make readable.
you can use a filter if you get stuck.

You're both ready and not ready for the composition pill.

this is really an exercise about utilizing and arranging lights and darks in the image to create the most readable shapes with gestalt principles in mind

adding my two cents
- when there's this little info it's extra important to keep the shapes super crisp
- easiest way to simplify is to ignore bounce light, form and just think about what's in shadow and the terminator on each shape, it's the most obvious cutoff
- i see little reason to exclude the lines at the bottom, they are also shadows

Either pay for or pirate craig mullin's course. Iirc he deliberately assigns photos with lighting that isn't very "real" since he's teaching you to fudge the lights and darks to create clarity. This is more clear if you actually lay for the course and listen to his critiques of students, but I never saved any of those and nobody ever posts them with the course so it gets a little lost

Yeah this is not an ideal way to teach a beginner what the hell

No lines probably means no cartoon outlines not no thin shadows.
