The general thread for Manga / manga-styled comic-making, manga-style illustration and related comic work. That said, everyone is welcome here.

Support each other and talk about your work or the work of others that excites you. Inking, character design, paneling / layout, writing, planning, and other discussions are all welcome.
Post resources, questions, in-progress pages, breakdowns of other works, etc. If a work is not yours, credit the maker (unless it's fucking obvious like a full page of One Piece or something).
Thanks to everyone for making /mmg/ a level-headed and helpful place. Remember, drawing and making comics and manga are difficult endeavors, and we're all in this struggle together.

Some western / indie publishers of Manga:

Saturday AM ( https://www.saturday-am.com/ )
> Digital indie magazine, seems to be on the up-and-up
> Open submissions for long-form series; also distributes series currently being published elsewhere.
> Regularly publishes one-shots, making it a good potential outlet for already-finished work.

Oni Press ( https://onipress.com/ )
> Technically indie, but at this point large enough by comic standards to be mentioned in the same breath as other publishers.

Antarctic Press ( https://antarctic-press.myshopify.com/ )
> Longtime large-indie publisher of OEL / manga-esque books.
> Seemingly taking submissions at present if http://www.antarctic-press.com/html/submissions.php is anything to go on.

Yen Press ( https://yenpress.com/ )
> Started out as a small indie publisher of original / Korean material, and has grown reasonably popular since.
> As of 2016, it is also one of the western arms of the Kadokawa Corporation, with Kadokawa owning a 51% stake.
> Editorial inquiries can apparently be sent to yenpress@yenpress.com, however, they apparently are not open to new submissions at this time.

Viz Media / Viz Originals ( https://www.viz.com/originals )
> *The* western manga publisher.
> Currently in the exploratory stages of setting up an English label.
> Submissions are open and several books have been announced. However, progress on the label seems to be moving very slowly.
> Still might be worth a shot anyway.

Shrine Comics ( https://shrinecomics.com/ )
> Small indie manga publisher
> Seemingly attempting to make the transition to physical volumes
> Allows crossposting to other sites

Iconic Comics (https://www.iconiccomics.com/)
>A bit like Oni Press and Antarctic Press
>A small publisher with a focus on indie works with manga inspiration

Other open comic publishers:

Dark Horse ( https://www.darkhorse.com )
>Dark Horse still welcomes your submissions, and all submissions will still be reviewed, just as they always have been.
>All unsolicited story/series proposals must have a full creative team on board. Writer-only proposals will not be reviewed.

Image comics ( https://imagecomics.com/ )
>Image Comics only publishes creator-owned material. They do not contract creators; they’re only interested in publishing original content for which you would retain all rights.
>Image Comics publishes creator-owned/creator-generated properties and THEY DON’T PAY PAGE RATES. Image takes a small flat fee off the books published, and it will be the responsibility of the creators to determine the division of the remaining pay between their creative team members.

Drawn and quarterly ( https://drawnandquarterly.com/ )
>Please email a low resolution PDF with at least 20 pages of comics and cover letter to submissions. Do not send dropbox links, scripts, or proposals. Please read our submissions FAQ.

Fantagraphics ( https://www.fantagraphics.com/ )
>submission page: https://www.fantagraphics.com/pages/faq

Top Shelf Productions ( https://www.topshelfcomix.com/ )
>Regarding submissions, we're easy. Just email us a download link of what you'd like us to review. NOTE: We cannot accept cover letters, plot synopses, or scripts unless they are accompanied by a minimum of 10-20 completed pages (i.e., fully inked and lettered comic book pages).

Any artist want to 50/50 collab on a project?
>>
I think I'm finally understanding the need for better tools after scanning my pages in 600dpi. My lines just look awful at that scale, but I see an immediate improvement when I switch to using a g-pen. Probably should upgrade paper as well.
>>
>>7751497
Anyone familiar with how the publishing process to these places work? Anyone to personally review with before you submit? Being both familiar with the professional aspect and the Japanese aspect of things makes things difficult but I want to expand my depth in-case bad scenarios happen.
>>
>>7751516
Depends on the project of course but I'm not against it. Though I am working on a project of my own I am forced to take a bit of a break on that.

Made a little one shot between chapters of my main comic, tell me what you think, and what I could improve on with me art. Never really drawn anthros before, and honestly not sure if its an improvement compared to me previous stuff but whatever

So when I try to use tones in CSP, it covers a whole layer in a tone that I need to erase. How do I get it to let me "paint" tones onto the picture?
>>
>>7751860
By using a mask or by filling in gray and converting those grays to tones.

Check that, I'll do 100% of the work. You are now free to move onto other projects

it was very easy to follow and I found it interesting. You did a good job playing it straight and having all the characters act beliavably without forcing a message in either direction. I saw the ending coming but I was also unsure which direction it would go, so it makes me interested in her reaction afterwards.

I think the art could be improved a lot by using soldi black tones more and to minimize hatching until you can do it more consistently. It was distracting a lot of times.

Weekly Shonen Jump's manuscript pay is JPY20,900/page, JPY31,350/page for color.
So in a month, a single mangaka can make:
19 pages x JPY20,900 x 4 weeks = JPY1,588,400.
Assuming they have 5 assistants working for at least JPY10,000/day:
5 bodies x JPY10,000 x 20 workdays = JPY1,000,000.
A typical WSJ mangaka can still make ends meet with JPY500,000 a month.
This still doesn't include royalties from volume sale, merchandise, and any other media collabs.
Why haven't you become a mangaka in Shonen Jump yet, anon?
>>
>>7752536
Too competitive of a market
Always at risk of getting cancelled after like 2 weeks
Not Japanese
>>
>>7752536
Anon there's 20 authors serialized at a time. It's highly competitive, possible THE most competitive publication in all of comics. There's a LOT of people trying to get into Jump.

>>7752544
>Not Japanese
Neither is Boichi.
>>
>>7752536
Where did you pull these numbers? IIRC, Araki said the high end of page rates were like $45 in his book about making manga.
>>
I have no idea where to ask so I'll try here, but where can one buy dip pens and ink that mangaka/comic artists use for a low price? Amazon has some cheap options but there's so many I have don't know where to start.
>>
>>7752536
I would be behodlen to editors and shonen jumps demands so I couldn't make the story exactly how I wanted. Not worth it IMO
>>
>>7752562
>Araki said the high end of page rates were like $45 in his book about making manga.
Fucking what? If he did then there's something fucky with the numbers because that's definitely not what Jump pays.

Is trying to copy 1:1 the art style of series I like the ideal way to learn core techniques and form my own style while avoiding the dreaded "western anime copy" cheap look?

really if you understand anime characters its easy to avoid the western anime look.

you automatically avoid that look by having any sort of respect or admiration for the medium at all

Thats a lot of fucking work to barely be able to scrape by living in the US. I make more than that painting just 3 houses a month.
>>

But they're not living in the US. Why are you applying US standards to not-the-US?
>>
>>7752794

>>7752536
>Why haven't you become a mangaka in Shonen Jump yet, anon?
>>
>>7752813
Okay, let me rephrase.
Are you saying that you wouldn't want to be serialized in WSJ because the money is low relative to how you currently live in the US?
You understand that you would not have to live in the US if you were serialized in WSJ, right? You could simply move to somewhere that money is more valuable, relatively.

Furthermore if you have an ongoing serialization in WSJ then either your work sells or you won't for long. You would be making very good money from royalties, you can easily double those numbers.
>>
>>7752819
>You could simply move to somewhere that money is more valuable, relatively
I'm not moving to a third world country surrounded by people i dont know spaking a language i dont speak. I currently live in one of the lowest cost of living states in the country and this is fine. I have been to Japan, i do not want to live there. I would not give up my life and business in my native country just to be published. Do you not have families, friends, ties to your community?

Now a monthly publication or just releasing tankobons, i could handle while running my real business here just fine. But weekly jump? Thats like the fucking salt mine gulag of making comics.
>>
>>7752819
The amount of money per man hour to draw each page required is simply not worth the amount of stress and shortened life span from said stress. Add on that even if you have the money, many serious mangakas will have assistants and the like and will have to pay them out of their own pocket, which further reduces the amount of money you make. Personally, that math doesn't work out for me, even if they further doubled the amount of money paid per page beyond what they already increased the money to recently.
>>
>>7752748
>Currently unavailable.
Damn the one I had has become rough and I can't find it in any stores.
>>
I'm really pushing myself out of the comfort zone with some of these pages. Like, dudes AND horses? Come on, man
>>
>>7752864
Nice horses.
>>
>>7752864
Very interested in what you're working on. I draw mostly men and horses and hate drawing women and backgrounds lol.
>>
>>7752846
>>7752829
Why doesn't Shonen jump simply provide artists with assistants and pay them instead of making the artist organize things? Seems like editorial should be in charge of hiring and paying assistants instead of putting that extra stress on the mangaka who are under enough pressure as is.
