>When Keane draws Ariel, he begins with what he calls an “explosion of scribbles,” then highlights and subtracts lines until he finds the form that he wants.

Do you visualize in your head or on the page?
>>
I'm on the page 100%. The only time I can manipulate images in my mind is when im in the waking phase of my dreams, and those images can last the whole day.

Im curious if people are able to mentally visualise and morph forms at will. It seems like lot to manage, and you'd have to be some kind of savant to imagine and translate mental imagery precisely. Also, I imagine that people who work in 3D develop that ability because they're constantly rotating, placing and sculpting form.

I'm merely a beginner who considers himself to have stronger than average mental imagery but when I'm looking at the page and locked in it's a part of my mental landscape. There's no distinction between the thoughts and visuals in my head and the page before me. Maybe it's corny as fuck for a jumped-up doodler to make lofty claims, but the over focus on aphantasia sounds like normies reductivism to me.

My emotions, my muscle memory, my connection to the subject, my materials, my weird little preferences, the outside knowledge I'm bringing in these are all equally important parts of the thought process. Hell, bring in reference and you're inviting the world into your thought process. For most people these are more important than the discussing the handful of savants who can compose a perfect image in their mind and mentally hold up a pencil to get the same measurements as they put it on a page.

Nah, you're experience is valid. I'd like to see through other's eyes how they process art and I know its hard to put into words, so Im relying on "corny" explanation here.

I was reasoning through what you were saying, but it was an unnecessary essay.
Im gonna conclude that "aphantasia" is too high level (broad/abstract) a problem to deal with. In my case, its almost certainly a lack of forward planning ability. I tend to start with a detail like a face or something and try to build around it, which leads to failure. You have to spend the time to plan the whole image first, including the background. Everything works as a whole.

Cheers.

*what I was writing was unnecessary, if that was unclear.

Maybe use a website that allows you to see and manipulate 3d objects so you can get perspective? Use a lot of references? Honestly man a lot of artists just “cheat” to get the product or idea they want on the paper, don’t handicap yourself because you can’t draw from
imagination well. No rules only tools and all that.

Man I wish I could get off this website and start drawing.
