Do people still spend money on commissions? Is it worth it to put yourself out there or is the oil drying up and there isn't enough demand to make a livable wage as an artist anymore?
multiple of my friends are making money from commissions, but their only source is twitter and telegram. they've told me they get nothing from other sites. patreon is also a good option once you get a following.

It all depends on the artist. Yes, a lot of people spend money on commission but that doesn't mean you will see any of that just because you are an artist.
Is this the thread where we all pretend to not know the reason why no one commissions anymore?

fine art commissions seem like where the real money is nowadays. There is DND characters and doing background for youtube animators as well.Though it does feel like a lot of people transitioned to background art recently.

Looping VTuber backgrounds are pretty common but straight up the background art industry is tough right now. Layout is basically dead because you need to be multidisciplined or work for a big studio like Titmouse.But you can get around this by making stuff for small to mid tier streamers. Or just make your own IP like everyone else is doing because fuck this gay earth
