Is there a single example of anime/manga characters drawn in a more realistic western style that's actually appealing? I don't think it's impossible, I've just never seen it done succesfully.

By anime and manga I'm referring to the more stylized range of the spectrum, and Cho's interpretation of Sailor Moon compared to it's source material provides a pretty good illustration of the stylistic divide. What usually happens is that the western fan art (for lack of a better term) usually ends up looking like it's depiciting a person doing cosplay rather than the character itself.
