The general thread for Manga / manga-styled comic-making, manga-style illustration and related comic work. That said, everyone is welcome here.

Support each other and talk about your work or the work of others that excites you. Inking, character design, paneling / layout, writing, planning, and other discussions are all welcome.
Post resources, questions, in-progress pages, breakdowns of other works, etc. If a work is not yours, credit the maker (unless it's fucking obvious like a full page of One Piece or something).
Thanks to everyone for making /mmg/ a level-headed and helpful place. Remember, drawing and making comics and manga are difficult endeavors, and we're all in this struggle together.

Some western / indie publishers of Manga:

Saturday AM ( https://www.saturday-am.com/ )
> Digital indie magazine, seems to be on the up-and-up
> Open submissions for long-form series; also distributes series currently being published elsewhere.
> Regularly publishes one-shots, making it a good potential outlet for already-finished work.

Oni Press ( https://onipress.com/ )
> Technically indie, but at this point large enough by comic standards to be mentioned in the same breath as other publishers.

Antarctic Press ( https://antarctic-press.myshopify.com/ )
> Longtime large-indie publisher of OEL / manga-esque books.
> Seemingly taking submissions at present if https://antarctic-press.myshopify.com/pages/submissions is anything to go on.

Yen Press ( https://yenpress.com/ )
> Started out as a small indie publisher of original / Korean material, and has grown reasonably popular since.
> As of 2016, it is also one of the western arms of the Kadokawa Corporation, with Kadokawa owning a 51% stake.
> Editorial inquiries can apparently be sent to yenpress@yenpress.com, however, they apparently are not open to new submissions at this time.

Viz Media / Viz Originals ( https://www.viz.com/originals )
> *The* western manga publisher.
> Currently in the exploratory stages of setting up an English label.
> Submissions are open and several books have been announced. However, progress on the label seems to be moving very slowly.
> Still might be worth a shot anyway.

Shrine Comics ( https://shrinecomics.com/ )
> Small indie manga publisher
> Seemingly attempting to make the transition to physical volumes
> Allows crossposting to other sites

Iconic Comics (https://www.iconiccomics.com/)
>A bit like Oni Press and Antarctic Press
>A small publisher with a focus on indie works with manga inspiration

Other open comic publishers:

Dark Horse ( https://www.darkhorse.com )
>Dark Horse still welcomes your submissions, and all submissions will still be reviewed, just as they always have been.
>All unsolicited story/series proposals must have a full creative team on board. Writer-only proposals will not be reviewed.

Image comics ( https://imagecomics.com/ )
>Image Comics only publishes creator-owned material. They do not contract creators; they’re only interested in publishing original content for which you would retain all rights.
>Image Comics publishes creator-owned/creator-generated properties and THEY DON’T PAY PAGE RATES. Image takes a small flat fee off the books published, and it will be the responsibility of the creators to determine the division of the remaining pay between their creative team members.

Drawn and quarterly ( https://drawnandquarterly.com/ )
>Please email a low resolution PDF with at least 20 pages of comics and cover letter to submissions. Do not send dropbox links, scripts, or proposals. Please read our submissions FAQ.

Fantagraphics ( https://www.fantagraphics.com/ )
>submission page: https://www.fantagraphics.com/pages/faq

Top Shelf Productions ( https://www.topshelfcomix.com/ )
>Regarding submissions, we're easy. Just email us a download link of what you'd like us to review. NOTE: We cannot accept cover letters, plot synopses, or scripts unless they are accompanied by a minimum of 10-20 completed pages (i.e., fully inked and lettered comic book pages).

In future, shouldn't we select pages anons have made themselves for the OP's? That might actually encourage more people to work on their pages
>>
>>7778685
Playing favorites is just asking for drama.
>>
>>7778685
No - we've discussed this topic in the past a few times and everyone quickly realized that it would be a very bad idea for several reasons:
1) It would just turn into a dramafest of "whose turn is it to get an OP image" and what if said regular anon hasn't posted something recently, then what do you use? It would also put pointless extra work on the thread creator.
2) If it's just up to whomever is making the thread, then it leads to drama if a certain anon's work is picked more than others.
3) Choosing professional manga was agreed upon as a way to focus our efforts on making good comics and manga instead of fighting to promote your work in the OP image slot.
4) Keeping it to just the anons that post here means that you would quickly get back to rotating between all of those anons, which is an EXTREMELY limited imageset. In comparison, the amount of professionally made manga is virtually limitless.

Moving from storyboard to actual lineart for chapter 5 has been fun thus far. I've never had to draw kids before, so I'm very pleased with how kid-Mina turned out here.

>>7778697
Nonsense, countless creative generals use their own posters work as OP's
>>
>>7778706
Yeah, and I've been in those threads - and you always see people bitching about not being in the image, or that they weren't in the FIRST of several images. It's a pain in the ass. Doing this isn't how /mmg/ works and we've already articulated why, even if you don't like the reasons. God forbid we do something different over here.
>>
>>7778710
You don't beat the schizos by doing what they want.

Putting anons work in the OP promotes a sense of community
>>
>>7778718
Then you do all the work next time to create the thread, including making the images. And do that the next time. And the next time. And the next time. And the next time. Or were you just hoping to have somebody else do what you want? Because it certainly isn't going to be done by me.
>>
Since artists are clearly incapable of any sort of sportsmanship, perhaps we should find a more concrete way of determing whos post deserves to be the OP
>near the end of each thread, run a strawpoll where people vote which image of all that were posted gets to be OP
>>
>>7778697
This site exists for drama. The amount of productivity from here is very little so might as well have fun.
>>
>>7778723
What's with this hostility? Are you so buck broken by the schizos that you have now become completely anti-social?
>>
>>7778724
Thats not easily exploitable at all
>>
>>7778727
No not really. It'd be really obvious if someone were faking votes, and besides these websites have gotten alot more secure over the years
>>

>>
>>7778701
Looks good! Is this read left to right or tight to left? It looks left to right but the right could also be a cover page.
>>
>>7778739
Thanks. Left to right (tho page 4 is on the left and page 7 is on the right, I meant more to just showcase a few pages randomly).
>>
>>7778746
Post whatever you feel like. I'm just so used to seeing things being read right to left that I get confused when I don't see panels to follow.
>>
Just keep making the threads as they have been. This doesn't need to be an issue.
>>
I'm just gonna speak plainly.
I've been in alot of generals over the years. There are some that are suited to purely technical help and some that are suited to communities. This is the latter kind.
Because frankly, nobody here has the skills to really provide much technical help. That sort of help is readily available in the books in the OP. What you gain from posting in this general is a sense of community, to feel that you are not alone in this hobby, to motivate one-another, and to get a few eyes on your work.

I think the Anon Jump is a brilliant idea and more should be done with it because I think if done well it would encourage more people to not only work on their manga, but also post it.
We should look for more ideas that contribute towards people having a go at making a manga and posting it. Foster a community.
But we must absolutely not do things that dissuade others from posting their manga, because that is all this general has going for it.

Don't be too bothered by the schizos, all generals on 4chan have a lifecycle that ultimately end in total schizo infestation. This general has plenty of years of life still in it before it succumbs to that. I don't think we've even see the potential for this general yet. Don't be so demotivated.
>>
>>7778759
The people who've been here the longest seem to be the biggest naysayers. This is a place to shitpost, it's impossible to build a cohesive community in a sight like this because it requires people with experience to actually move people forward and since there's none here this is doomed to be one big circlejerk.

>>
>>7778759

I think the point of comic collections and magazines is to help people get normies looking at their comic rather than having to do all the advertising and promotion themselves. So a /mmg/ zine would only be for the people here, who are artists and not normies. A non artist is not going to discover Anon Jump. What the magazine will do is light a fire under anons but these threads do a good enough job doing that as it is.

A zine has to promise something to convince an artist to join it and take on the responsibility of maintaining a schedule with others. a better idea would be a one time anon jump that just has the first chapter or two of different mangas with links to where you can read the rest. Everyone here already reads everyone elses mangas though, so you have to find a way to make anon jump spread to the rest of /ic/.

>>
>>7778776
I agree there is a trouble of advertising, in that no matter how many people post here, if it's just here, it doesn't spread beyond here, and so there's no real support structure in that sense

A parallel to this is /asp/ of /vt/, the aspiring vtubers general, where while people organised together on 4chan, the collated viewership numbers were expressed on twitch, which served as an enormous popularity boost and some of those people are now doing streaming as a career thanks to it. Now that's a support structure

At the end of the day storytelling is done because you think you have a story in your mind that will improve peoples lives by having it placed on sheets of paper and distributed. If you don't think that you have a story worth telling, or that comics aren't the best way to tell it I'd advise quitting because you are right that it is more pain than it's worth materially.

How do you feel about sexualized character designs in "serious" or non-ecchi manga?
Do they give you the ick when you stumble upon them?
Do you feel they're unnecessary because it makes you unable to discuss this character with your friends or colleagues without being labelled "that freak"?
>>
>>7779238
I'm not a sterile, sexless lonely retard and I am not friends with any, so sexy characters in any context are appreciated.
>>
>>7779238
They're fine so long as it's consistent according to the rules of that world. No, they don't give me the ick either way, I only care that it makes sense for that story. I don't discuss manga with anybody at all outside of /ic/, so this is not a problem for me. In fact, unless I tell somebody explicitly your average person would have no way of knowing I liked manga/anime at all. I never bring it up and have no collectibles or merchandise.

I think you have to draw a fine line between sexy and pornographic
>>
>>7778952
I wouldn't say it's uncommon, though it's not like anybody knows how often it happens. I just know that there are professional assistants. That is, people who have no interest in becoming an author themselves, they're happy to just be a full time senior assistant to people who are authors. MaedaX is one such example, he has an instructional youtube channel and everything. If you ever saw Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, that random dude's face that showed up a bunch was MaedaX.
>>
>>7779238
They suck and debase your story unless the sexualization impacts the plot in a way that actually speaks about attraction beyond a superficial way.

Good example of nudity/sexualization is Komagata Yumi from Rurouni Kenshin, an okay example is Bulma from Dragon Ball, and a bad example is what you sent and 95% of the industry both in Japan and abroad across multiple mediums.
>>
>>7779238
>Do you feel they're unnecessary because it makes you unable to discuss this character with your friends or colleagues without being labelled "that freak"?
This basically, except it makes discussing the work as a whole harder because eventually the discussion will be hijacked and derailed by someone who is the freak.
Pretty much how i feel about any discussion on this website.
Also to make a female character to just be "sexy" i find to be lazy, and depending on how much of a fetish she is, just outright disgusting.
I'll even say that there's a double standard for those who create and defend the sexualization of women yet shy away from sexualization when it comes to men. I am against both but for those kind of people you can really tell what their priorities truly are.
I also find it to be bad form if a creator tries to convince people that their clearly sexualized and/or fetish fuel character isn't supposed to be that and that there's a deeper meaning behind it, often times the meaning being very contrived, just look at Kojima and Quite from MGSV. If you're going to make fetish fuel, that's bad enough but to not own up to it is just sad.
>>7779250
This too.
>>
>>7779238
Depending on the genre, they stick out like a sore thumb. Some are obviously the authors fetish, so it's kinda pathetic and gross. Imagine if it was a scat fetish instead, that's how gross and off-putting it can be when they randomly insert it.
>>
>>7779238
If a person doesn't like sex or sexuality, they they should probably stay very, very far away from anime and manga, because the two have always been intrinsically intertwined.

I think if you're hanging with a crowd where you're discussing something that has some surface level ecchi and you're described as a freak, you are probably hanging out with sexless zoomers, or prudish types who are probably more stuck on sex than you are.
>>
>>7779238
Actual Christian here. Don't care. Draw them myself. Anything outside of porn is fine and often preferred. Mostly because the western jews hate pretty

>>
>>7779238

1 Corinthians 8:13 Therefore, if what I eat causes my brother or sister to fall into sin, I will never eat meat again, so that I will not cause them to fall.
This scripture teaches us that if what we do will lead others to stumble and sin then it's for the best to not do it at all no matter how innocent it may seem, this includes drawing anything that can lead someone else to committing sins of lust. This is a scripture i stand by as is one that has helped me understand y creativity better, it's the core of the many reasons why i put all of my concepts and ideas into hibernation.
We as followers of Christ are meant to make sacrifices. I had to sacrifice my concepts, ideas and creativity for Christ to help and focus on making this world a better place and i hope more can make sacrifices themselves too.

I don't to make a new thread to ask this question, but I am curious.

Have any of you ever started to develop feelings for characters you've created?
>>
>>7779238
My editor literally just asked me to sexualize my female lead more, because now she turned out to be the more suitable character to be the main POV, and thus, the defacto main character. Which is extremely risky in shounen manga.

He asked me to have her clothes tear when she fights, and to include a shower scene in the first chapter as a better segway into her motivational flashback.

I agree with him by the way. Sex is a very powerful marketing tool, and as a personal opinion, I find depicting female sexuality to be a very natural and even beautiful thing. It's just a matter of how you do it.

In my character's case, she always has this cool aura, so he said not to undermind that. If you notice, none of his suggestions were ideas that humilated or degraded her, but rather highlighted her beauty to tantalize, but also used nudity to emphasize character. Such as the afforementioned shower scene, nudity=vulnerabilty. He suggesteed having her try to scrub the blood away from her hands and use that to show her vulnerability to segway into reminiscence.

tl;dr - I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with it. It all comes down to execution. But even like ecchi comedy is also fine, it just depends on the tone of your story. Right, so like an accidental grope wouldn't work if your story is super serious. But you can still find ways to include sexual content outside of that.

If you're writing shounen, I'd say it's a generally good idea to do so, but your target audience is hormonal teenagers. At least if you hope to succeed.

I don't know about romantic feelings, but I have definitely become personally attached to the story I've made. I think if someone presented a geniune critique of it, I would be hesitant to change what has become something I'm so attached to.
>>
>>7779706
I disagree. That depends entirely on how he presents his work. If sexualization is only one of the things he's using to get attention then he'll be fine.
>>
>>7779688
A little bit. I'm not in love with them or anything, but I like them and I really want to bring them to life and show them to the world. I feel as if I owed them that. Maybe once I actually get past the "pre-production" phase and start developing them I might start feeling new things, which is something I'll be looking forward to.

Ah yes, i understand this, the feeling one has towards their creations, like looking at a family you yourself birthed out of your minds, right?
Creatives consider their characters as their kids for a reason. Obviously not literally our kids but still the same feeling that gives us parental instincts.

>>
>>7779734
You got any scripture you would like to add?
>>
>>7779736
Yes, and isekai now tends to use sexualization as bait, only for people to ditch all the series that do it.
The point is that gooners as a fanbase doesn't last forever.
>>
>>7779706
A work can have sex in it and it still not be the MAIN point. If you have a female MC, and you're good at drawing pretty girls, it's moreso a useful tool for leverage. Especially since statistically, feMCs see much less success in shounen than male MCs. That's just a fact.
>>
>>7779740
I mean, I don't follow most isekai, and the few that I have watched like Mushoku Tensei or Konosuba all had plenty of sexual content and waifu bait, and both were very successful.

Sex as a tool to get attention works perfectly well, you just have to have more substance beneath that, obvously.

>>
>>7779746
>Sex as a tool to get attention works perfectly well, you just have to have more substance beneath that, obvously.
You don't need substance, actually, you just need the sex. The audience is so sexually screwed that they will literally pay to get blue balled 24/7. I think most people found it nation crushing to have entire populations not show any interest in real intimacy and incentivizing anti-family behaviors but it certainly sells. The only thing men and women read now is porn.

>>7779746
>Mushoku Tensei or Konosuba
Both turned out to be FOTM and they along with isekai as a whole has gone down hill in terms of both quality and popularity.
>>7779776
This is very short sighted and proves that you don't actually experience any media outside of your own personal bubble.
And making light of Japan's decrease in population due to this stuff while supporting even more of it just goes to prove how little you care about people as long as you are able to be a gooner.
I hope you'll be able to gain more empathy and understanding one day and i suggest starting by not looking at anything even slightly NSFW.
Not to mention that NSFW media is having their own downfall as well with NSFW games on Steam selling less and less and even NSFW webcomics are getting less and less attention.
Times are changing and people around the world are rejecting NSFW and are moving forward to chastity, it's just that certain people are able to accept that better and more quickly than others and i hope that one day you and everyone else on here will accept the chaste future as well.

I wish this was true. I'm not saying to use it as an excuse to post slop but I'm being objective by stating that if you want to make a lot of money people don't actually care about plot. I personally can't fathom the idea of someone selling their reputation for drawing porn when it isn't even going to make you that rich, just the least chance to go broke.

Well Anon, with more and more people realizing how bad people have it when it comes to being victims of lust in one way or another, more and more people are turning away from it and supporting more SFW material. I might be slow, but it's slowly but surely.
It's best to do our parts and support as much SFW media as we can in any way we can and help support NSFW creators going SFW.

This. Despite Japanese manga and animation being known for it's specific style of big eye humans the country still very much loves art styles that are cute and cartooney with small wacky characters. You should watch this lecture in your free time, might give some hindsight(the video is specifically about regular books but it covers the same ground really)
If you are gonna look into publishing traditionally you should get a sequence from your comic thats about 25-ish pages long that gets publishers a sense of who the characters are, how they act, and what the goal of the narrative is.Ideally the sequence should show off your artistic ability too, along with a basic script of the story that tells publishers what happens throughout the comic. If you want more details read this article that I pulled from the webarchive

If it goes black screen though just press the "CLEAR" button
But heres a pic for the article. Also from one anon to another, even if you decide in the end to still self publish online like a traditional webcomic, you should still make these pitch documents and have em in your back pocket, cause you can do traditional publishing with your comic LATER. Its anecdotal but this girl who calls herself Red from OverlySarcasticProductions on Youtube has a webcomic herself and has had it going for a while, but she struck a deal to get like a volumes worth of pages published and now that same webcomic can be found on real book shelves. If you can build up a following(assuming you dont have one for the sake of this post) around your art and your comic you can probably convince a suit that "Hey if this is getting eyes on my end you can probably earn a few bucks if you print some copies for me" Although if you do that I wouldnt tell em your comic is """finished"""" cause those small tweaks can take up some time. Its not lying per say just let em know(assuming you get that far into the convo) but give yourself a good window
>>
>>7780262
I didn't get a link regarding your lecture, but I read the initial article you sent and it is helpful. When I said done I mean I have the comic I'd use to pitch done, but I have the script for much more if things work out and get serialized. I was actually thinking about starting to draw the chapters already just in-case.
>>7780269
I need to practice this hard. From my understanding regular book authors typically say something like "Imagine Harry Potter but in Space" to make things easy to understand for them rather than describing the plot, and I have something similar. I also need to work on the back cover.

>>7780286
Read the article. I take it the manuscript is simply the comic in this case? Also worried about the author's bio since my credentials are non-existent.
>Even if you decide in the end to still self publish online like a traditional webcomic, you should still make these pitch documents and have em in your back pocket, cause you can do traditional publishing with your comic LATER.
I document just about everything so thankfully this will be of little concern, even have it in multiple languages oftentimes. Actually my hardest part is the English audience part of it over my native or even Japanese.
>Although if you do that I wouldnt tell em your comic is """finished"""" cause those small tweaks can take up some time. Its not lying per say just let em know(assuming you get that far into the convo) but give yourself a good window
I assume this is to keep suspense and the idea that working with you can also mean more money down the road.

Tonight's Manga Chapter: The Editor's Barely Contained Fetish
>>
>>7779691
On the topic of >>7779688 your editor basically asked you to whore out your daughter. I'd sooner change the entire story.
>>
>>7779706
>I have seen this happen before, most notably with the majority of isekai.
I'm still salty that Goblin Slayer pretty much ceases all its explicit depiction of sexual violence after it got popular.
>>
>>7780433
Hmm, I'll tease a little bit I suppose.
It's a Gothic Horror fantasy manga for one of the major publishers in Japan.

I got the "soft greenlight" from the EiC two years ago when my editor brought the first draft in for a serialization meeting. The EiC said "do it over as many times as it takes to make it perfect." Because they believe it can be a big hit.

Here what my editor had to say on this matter, for context:

>一つ思ったのは、少年漫画で女性主人公は挑戦的な試みではあるので(女性主人公のヒット作も少ないですし)、男性に楽しんでもらえる工夫は必要になると思います。

>アリスをちょっと艶やかに、ストレートに言えばちょっとだけエロく、描いてあげると良いのかなと思います!

Essentially, originally, the main heroine wasn't gonna be the MC. She was simply going to be the main heroine. But after many attempts of trying to get the story to work from the POV of the male protagonist, I pitched my editor the idea of opening the story with the main heroine instead, and he was on board.

So, I drew up a name for that version and submitted it, and he loved it. It pretty much fixed every sticking point we'd been having up until now.

Ofc that means that now she's the main character, and that comes with its own fair share of challenges.
>>
>>7780547

I think he said it really well in how he described it. "She needs to appeal to male readers."

As I was drawing the revision and waiting for his feedback, this is a concern I was having as well. I suppose it's not something you're fully aware of until you seriously try to write a shounen story with a female protagonist, but there are so many ways it can go wrong or give off the wrong vibe unintentionally.

I think one of the more understated ones is that it can become VERY easy for the story to feel like a shoujo manga, which indeed CAN be very offputting for male readers, especially teenagers, if the manga feels like "oh this is like a manga for girls." This is not a point that my editor made specifically, but it is something that I started to percieve as well, and tried to be very careful to avoid while drawing. Again, she needs to be appealing to boys.

A lot is that cool tsundere aura she has, and how cool her battles are, but the sex appeal is also part of it, and he's right. I think a more deliberate effort to show her sexuality can go a long way to get people interested in her.

Ultimately an editor will always be focused on how to help make something popular, that's their job.

Plus, I also think his suggestion is twofold, no.1 given the genre (gothic horror) sex appeal is just part to the course. No.2 he knows I like drawing pretty girls and I'm quite good at it, so he likely sees it as an opportunity to highlight one of my strengths as a main marketing angle as well.

Good art. Makes sense why you got some contacts. Might be mostly because it makes people uncomfortable and to be quite honest, the author doesn't do it justice with punishing those filthy goblins for the things they do, thus the raping is just shown for shock value or some barely veiled fetish and adds nothing to the story.
The world of GS should be centered around actually eradicating goblins from the ecosystem.

I believe that GS is just a cucking fetish manga.
Not only does the author cuck everyone by showing humans getting raped by greenies, but he also cucks the audience by delivering a mediocre revenge story.
No one gives a shit about how much the females want to fuck mc, and how autistic mc is, go genocide the fucking gobbers and make mc an actual autist dead set of exterminating every single one of them.
