>>7784565>THREAD CHALLENGE - draw 100 figures before this thread falls off page 10i only managed 20 last thread before spooktober got in the way. i shall try harder this time and looking at it logically, its ONLY like 3 figs a day till the thread dies considering how long they stay up. entirely manageable for any skill level. ganbatte.
1/100 - i forgot what time it was, i would have just penciled the whole fucking drawing for another 2 hours.
#1 first figgy in a month almost, could've gone worse. >>7784596looking very good as usual, very inspirational. sometimes you loose yourself in the drawing or rather in the zone.
>>7784565>THREAD CHALLENGE - draw 100 figures before this thread falls off page 10Where do i get 100 nude girls to pose for me?
>>7784620How smelly is a live figure drawing lesson? Can you smell the model's fishy puss?Or is it overwhelmed by the stench of reclusive artist's BO?
>>7784565Where do you get hot chicks that lie down for you naked in sneakers?
>>7784671>Where do you get hot chicks that lie down for you naked in sneakers?I just approach girls on the streets.
>>7784596i remember you were big on ink for a long time, what made you want to focus on pencil?
2 i was struggling with a little, but the perspective was unusual, and i think it came out okay. the hand and arm might be a bit short, but i ran out of paperspace there. 3 i'm more satisfied with, but the pose was very simple. i really enjoy hakamas design and their purpose of obfuscating leg and feet positions for fighting purposes. i think i will draw from more kendo/kenjutsu and aikido references
1/100h e a v y
>>7784783sports references are really fun. very wild at times. you couldve made the legs a lot stronger, they look almost comical in the reference picture, like out of a popeye cartoon! imagine that lady crushing your head with her thighs haha
>>7784662seek professional help
>>7784788I enjoyed how well the pose portrayed the weight being held, I think I will seek out more sports references. Good eye on the legs- the detail could definitely be pushed more >imagine that lady crushing your head with her thighs hahasure thing
>>7784801a death worthy dying to/for. you'd probably be mentioned in the history books as well
>>7784779>kendo/kenjutsu and aikido referencesWhere do you find these? Videos?
>>7784860yandex, pinterest etc. i'm sure theres lots of them on japanese sites as well, thats where i found some cool sumo ones. but that was mainly news sites. i wonder if there is even something like a kendo sports scene in japan like there is for sumo. i might check the japanese chans as well
>>7784869>yandex, pinterest, japanese news sitesThanks. I don't think kendo gets as much visibility from spectators so it might be harder to find. I found some japanese action pose books once, I wonder if they have a kendo edition.
>>7784565Here's a fun thread question: What amount of time spent per figure is best for expanding your visual library, in your opinion?
>>7784921all the times. every time, in tandem. quick ones, mid/sketchy longer ones, highly detailed ones. you should do quick figures for warming up and then ramping up the time spent per figure.

Guys im looking for an "anatomy atlas" for artists.-I need the "greek" proportions of everything, how many head lengths is the with of the rib cage... and so on-i need all the masses, but not the stupid medical illustrations with skinned people. something like pic related.-i need a high resolution, men, femoids, little humans, straight knees, bend knees, twisted arms and so on-it must be in forms of pictures, i cant rewatch Vilppus 100h anatomy course if i forgot a little detail of the arm- little to no text, it must be condensed to be useful- it should have a logical structure, big masses first, details laterThe last 2 points kill almost all classical books. Like Bammes is very good. But too much text, way too big and its too random legs, head, torso, face... its hard to find what you want.Does something like this exist?Do i have to do it myself? Searching for the best pictures in different books and put them together to compound a little body atlas? If so, anyone interested in putting material together?
i feel like i'm getting there. #5 felt satisfying, focusing more on the figure than any details and trying to be a tad bit cleaner than usual>>7785629you should write it up yourself and draw it yourself, like a cheat-sheet type of deal. this way you'll remember it better. it's what they call studying i think. heh. just kidding, but since youre looking for something very specific, you should put it together yourself for either your own use or sharing even.
>>7785663Yeah, i think i will have to do it myself. Sure, i will study it, but for the reference, originals are better, of course. There is a guy on tube, he is making his own Anki pages out of art books. Not exactly what im looking for, but maybe i will make something similar in nature.Anyway, i downloaded everything i could by Bammes, those are thousands of pages. I will have to evaluate the content for a couple of days, first.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J_j3BunQ6AQ
can't stop, won't stop. actually, thats it for today, i want to check out the new vince gilligan show. keep on figgin, figgers.

>>778555221/100 the refs were too fat for me. I sucked the fat out of their disgusting bodies. Why do they smile in their photos? I would be frowning in disgust at who i am.>>7785558When you can’t copy the ref because of skill limitations or because its so disgusting that you refuse to draw it, then you sprinkle some style on there to make it taste better.>>7785893I hate them because i am fat and they remind me of how disgustingly out of shape i am>>7786156Who knew that most of the world is clothed most of their lives.
>>7786605>Why do they smile in their photos? I would be frowning in disgust at who i am.as someone who was very fat most of my life, i understand your frustration towards it. it's harder to loose weight when doing something as taxing as drawing/art, because you will need some form of energy to keep the brain and body going. and also props for speeding through your own challenge, your efforts are encouraging. and this black and red ink style looks mesmerizing.
I want to go deeper with my anaotmy studys.I have a medical skull, haw drawn it a lot and got me more understanding about the face structure.I have a greek bust op Aphrodite.Drawing stuff irl is superior. Now im thinking about buying a full skeleton. What you think? Whats the best size, 100% or smaller? How can i pose the thing? Its not of too much help when all the bones are just hanging down.
Is "study core" art a thing in itself or is it a tool to achieve knowledge, to paint "real" art afterwords? This guy, Michael Mentler, is old as fuck but most his work looks like out of an art students book.Is it cringe or based?
>>7786031what kind of buses you go to??
>>7786709Lol, i think it should mean pussy. I started studying the subject, no so long ago. So far im not too happy with the results.
>>7786692Those look pretty cool, I can appreciate the aesthetic. Though I do not know whether he himself draws them out of passion or if he simply wants to copy Da Vinci. The lips are pretty disgusting though. Not very "high art"esque
You can sell your low int studys for that amount of money?

>>7786156Tried to be more minimal after studying another style
>>7787922Are you drawing the silhouette?
>>7787595the way you drew the hand isnt in far enough on the stomach as it is in the reference. should be little closer to the pelvis
>>7787930You could call it that cause I only did some minimal gesture lines to map stuff out and then drew on that without drawing the construction, though it's not just copying the silhouette if that's what you meant. Changed some stuff and exaggerated other stuff from the references, so I did have to do the construction, just in my head.
>>7787632thankss !! yours look soooo good aswell, i wanna try watercolor so bad, but i don't have time
>>7787632idk why but your art kindof reminds me of tableguy mostly the bottom left one
>>7787130Probably not. But you can try.
I went to /jp/ for some material last monthI'll buy a tablet when I can do hands
gone for a bit but im backjust some practice sketches for tonight. Trying out new techniques/study methods.
>>778763238/100 fun fact, fat people are easier to paint because… they are fat. More space to mix paint and fix mistakes. I skipped the pencil sketch on the first set. The main goal is to get comfortable with these brushes since they’re tricky to use. Nice torso btw.>>7790585Good job, your silhouettes are really strong. The negative space of the legs and pants reads really well, I think that’s doing most of the work here (the thumbnail looks very readable). But the local values of the folds are hard to read, maybe try unifying most of the shadows without leaving too many light spots inside.

>>7791647thanks y-you too
>>7791439Been looking at drawings by some artists, Gustav Klimt for instance, and I noticed most of their figure drawings/sketches seem to be almost uniquely focused on contour without construction at all. So that's what I tried with these. Tried to limit my control z and eraser as much as possible for these but they're each less than 10 minutesI'm doing something more complex that I might post in a bit
side figs took me around 2 hours each, center took me an hour. there's still one last piece my figures are missing that'd make them good. something to do with my linework? shape design? I dunno
>>779058558/100 I forgot that i can use pencil over the watercolor. There is hope for fixing some of these faces>>7790876Welcome back>>7791299I thought of your tip while painting today, but lost my way so I’ll try again on the next set. Thanks!>>7792496Construction is for children. But for real i usually autopilot and focus on negative spaces when copying figgies. I only use construction when drawing from imagination, but i suspect you could “do it in your head” if I was actually good at drawing>>7792562Your feet need a bit of love, and im not even a foot guy. But I will say this, you spent 2 hours making your figure look like it was one shot in 10 minutes. So i dont know if that is what your intent is. As a passerby they look legit, but i think we are all assuming these were “quick doodles” enjoyable nonetheless
>>7792647>But I will say this, you spent 2 hours making your figure look like it was one shot in 10 minutestalentbro...
>>7792562Your perspective is bad because you're copying the ref faithfully instead of constructing them against a consistent spatial framework (see will weston or kjg). The middle torso is particularly bad on this.
>>7792696>you're copying the ref faithfully
Dug in longer on this one, (18ish?). Really more of an exploratory exercise trying to place stuff without regard to how the end looks. Draw in parts of the skeleton, draw diagram lines, be unrestrained about making marks to "check" my work
>>7792705No I mean you're looking at the 2d patterns & relationships instead of being like "which of my lines define perspective-space most strongly & how do I relate everything to them so it 'fits' in that space". You gotta have a 3d model / sculpture in your head
Spend around 3-4h on this one. Used only h and hb, as the ref is quite light, maybe i will darken the background, but probably not.Would like to hear some critic. I tried to draw in an academic way, with emphasis on structure, but the result does not really show that.
>>7792927Photos aren't great.
>>7792562they dont look like they took 2 hours but they definitely dont look like they took 10 minutes either, mostly because i’ve seen tons of sketchy digital vs clean lines digital and the latter always takes longer. also because i used to take 2-3 hours on now 20 minute referenced figures too (approx 2 years ago) so if somebody told me they spent a ton of time i wouldn’t be suprirsed. for imagination figures i still take a long ass time though. im guessing you are redrawing a lot to get the figure correct and lines clean, just decide on whether you are trying to practice figures or clean linework. if you feel uncomfortable you dont have to focus on speed you will get faster eventually, but try drawing on paper it forces you to draw more figures without noodling a bunch
>>7792927The ref is not that light. You're afraid of values. Inside the eye sockets the shadow is a middle value, maybe a little darker.
>>778660516, 17 and 20 are really hot. Strikes my fancy yumm
>>7792138Today's figgies>>7792647I like the watercolor arc. These are really nice to look at.
>>7792990>You're afraid of values. What is your foundation for that?As i said, the softest pencil i used, was a hb, going darker would damage the paper or require softer pencils.Anyway, i probably should have gone darker.
Started a new one, with charcoal, with less light on the skull.
>>7793238>What is your foundation for that?A. Look at your picture. The values are right there. If you can't see it, that's something you need to work on.B. I also have a model skull.Tip: switch tho charcoal. Graphite is really more for portable sketching, not serious rendering. (I know uni art programs teach graphite, but they also don't know anything desu.>>7793268Ah, good. Still not quite there but this is an improvement.is that willow or vine? Willow is best, but vine is ok for halftones and shading within the light areas.
>>7792496WIPbeen trying to work on brush economy, think i've restarted painting this girl's ass like 10 times no joke. Nothing I do looks right, all the brush strokes make her butt look too bumpy instead of a smooth gradient between values.Don't know if I'm going to post any more for a while. I've lately had some religious scrupulosity of my love for drawing sexy women. Sounds silly I know.
>>779264762/100 got some kind of pipeline thing going on now. I followed that old watercolor guide: tea, milk, honey today. I think it helps to simplify the process. Also found a couple good goto color mix combos>>7793068I like your white bukkake girls too anon, they also strike my fancy>>7793419It’s like veganism. You save the animals by not eating meat, but now im going to eat extra meat to cover for you. We will keep the thread warm for you when you return>>7793463I fucking love shoes>>7793465Got a foot guy over here…>>7793238>damage the paperI fuck my paper up so bad. I bear down so hard it just shreds. I draw so hard that my pencil becomes loose and i have to keep tightening it like one of those anime guys adjusting his glasses.>>7793021They were so fat before i had my way with them
>>7793483>Got a foot guy over here…just because the paper cut it off and i was running out of steam towards the end and rushed it, so one of them looks a little weird anyway
>>7793483>but now im going to eat extra meat to cover for youbut then you'll get fat
>>7793347>is that willow or vine?I dont know, its from faber castel, called natural charcoal, but i cant find what type of wood was used. Its soft and quite light in tone.
>>7792496>>7791439>>7789400>>7788556>>7793419These are really great. Are you the pineapple guy, and if not, is there anywhere I could find more of your work? It's funny you mention Klimt. Both his and Schiele's drawings were what got me into figure drawing, way back. I copied so many of those when I first started drawing. The way they are able to reveal the three-dimensional form just with line is so elegant.wrt you scruples, could you find refs of women in non-sexy poses that perhaps are less likely to trigger bad impulses? Also, if you are able to go figure drawing from life, I find that having to interact with the model (like in the breaks and stuff) and having a room full of other people present sort of hampers the ability of the brain to go to immoral places. Of course, I don't know the exact nature of your reservations, so all of that may be way off the mark. I just could relate to getting porn brain when drawing from certain refs, which I try to avoid.
>>7792759went longer on this one, much less exploratory, more delicate. Funny how the other approach seems like it gave better solidity (the angle might be a factor too though)>>7793419>Don't know if I'm going to post any more for a while. I've lately had some religious scrupulosity of my love for drawing sexy women. Sounds silly I know.elaborate.>>7793465you, like me, need to unify your shadows better if you're gonna use them.
>>7793623The proportions seem a little off in this, especially I'd say her waist is much too narrow. It looks like you block in shapes using straight lines for the back and shoulder contour but then not for the lower part of the body? I'd block in the entire thing as straight-lined shapes and then check negative spaces and the angles between different corners/points in your shapes against the ref (as you go, not after everything is drawn). You can even draw guidelines between relevant points if you need to.And then you can round things off and make them seem organic after everything is placed correctly.I've found Bargue studies helpful in this regard.
>>7793590>Are you the pineapple guyNoI keep hearing about this "pineapple guy" and now I'm interested in what happened with this personI have a xitter that doesn't have much on it. Just a few things i've sparsely uploaded the past few years and my drawings from the last /fig/ thread. I'll share the link when I upload the next round.>It's funny you mention KlimtI will usually look up a specific artist's work as an inspiration boost before I start drawing.I like to say I have a "superpower." That is if I look at an artists work for long enough I feel as if some of their skill rubs off on me for a short time and I can come close to duplicating what they do.>could you find refs of women in non-sexy posesI suppose I could. But I really like drawing women in sexy poses. It's not so much I have bad impulses. I can control them. It's more my religion highly frowns upon "near occasions of sin" and sometimes, when scrolling past the oodles of porn to find a reference I like, I get a guilty feeling telling me I shouldn't be looking at any of this stuff.Part of me is worried I'm using art as an excuse/gaslighting myself into looking at porn, the other part of me wants to say "fuck off puritans I'll draw whatever I want." It also doesn't help that some of my favorite artists frequently have erotic subject matter.I like drawing from live models, I have a busy schedule and my only real free time are my evenings which is when I post. There is a place which hosts nude models weekly for figure drawing but my schedule doesn't really allow for it.Model reference packs specifically for artists are mostly unsatisfying for me. They're usually in some bizarre costume or wacky pose. I like to use erotic photoshoots because the subject is usually in a fairly neutral pose, attractive, and I can search for whatever drapery or clothing that I wish. I prefer finding the rhythm in the shapes of their bodies themselves rather than study the gesture of some bizzare pose.
>>7793068These felt like a struggle today but I got through it
this is only a half figure but i want to post it anyway, i was trying to figure out those drapes and found it to be a lot of fun, even if its not all too accurate. it's very random but still has a sense to it at the same time, which i found pretty.
>>7793623Stopped working on form halfway through and fell into my crutch of copying shadow shapes :/.>>7793639Sounds like it's gonna take more than 30 minutes.>>7793662>Part of me is worried I'm using art as an excuse/gaslighting myself into looking at porn, the other part of me wants to say "fuck off puritans I'll draw whatever I want." A god among men. >>7794876Why do you draw the hoops? More importantly why no boobs????
>>7795678what brush did you use? My hard round never looks like that, there is a kind of softness on the edges that I just can't manage, and the soft round gets too airbrush-y
>>7795780I paint in csp. With photoshop i could never get hard round to look just right but csp has a much better "painting engine."Toward the end I used a brush that has some different properties. It's like a blending prush and I just used it to take out some of the worse-looking brush strokes. That was like a 10 minute touch-up though, most of it is the default round brush in csp.
>>7793623>you, like me, need to unify your shadows better if you're gonna use them.oh yeah i know, but working on a practise too long is just not worth it. the figure is more important in the end i think. i do good values when i need to, but that takes at least double the time i would. just move on and keep at it, you shouldnt worry much yourself, you're pretty good already. in the end it's just sticking to the grind while doing projects on the side of daily practice. sometimes practice turns into pieces and vice versa.keep on keeping on
simple and quick watercolour gestures, just because i felt like it. i think the very crude first one is my favorite. all from the same turnaround pack/girl.

exploring how much gestural information just the hands and feet carry.>>7792647>but lost my way so I’ll try again on the next set.trying to practice multiple things at once feels counterproductive; trying to render fabric alone.>>7793976the folds are hard to read,
>>7795676Yeah fuck it, I think i'll just be this general's resident pin-up artist for the time being. This is more of a drapery study anyway. What a pain in the ass. It was the only thing I got done tonight.>>7795769Yeah it's not easy, I just try to admire the physical beauty without letting my mind wander>>7796040love theseI have this wild idea btw.I'm getting tired of using internet for my only source of references and I waste a gazillion years trying to find what I want. I live in a college town, I wonder if I can put up ads around campus seeing if any of them want to be models for a photoshoot/live session?Has anyone done this before or have experience hiring their own models? I've drawn from life before but never directed or hired a model.I know I need a model release form or something. Will college girls tear their clothes off for me if I throw 300 dollars at them? I guess I'll have to hire male models too so I don't look like a sex pest. Is that a bad idea?
>>7792562another set of 1-2 hour figs, but this time none of them worked out
>>7796985You need a portfolio of art that is public-facing so the community understands you're doing what you say you are. Huge difference between the guy wiith a studio in the local arts building and some rando with a camera. Also, most models will shy strongly away from erotic poses. Even mels mneyan doesn't get many erotic poses out of his models unless they're established porn stars. Imagine an ad "$300 to be in porn" and imagine that person is lying to you to hide that it's porn.Source: modeled for multiple figure drawing sessions and got pitched a photoshoot (did not accept).
>>7797272Yeah I probably wouldn't be asking them to do erotic poses. I just use erotic models a lot because they're attractive and they usually have the clothes/drapery I'm looking for. I understand I'd probably need to be somewhat established as well so I don't look like some random weirdo. I think I'd link my work in the ad or something.
>>7793268Used wrong paper.
Started a new one, on better paper.>>7796985If you have the money, do it. But in general, its way to expensive to learn from models you hire. Its better to join an atelier or workshop, where people share the cost. But i dont know, i live in a small village, the next atelier would be at least 50km away. I think i will have to draw statues for a while.
I think im done, would like to hear some critique. If there are obvious mistakes, would like to fix them and move on.
>>7797414looks purdy gud, i dont notice anything. i wanted to do a skull as well recently, but i dont want to do it from a photo. i wonder if i can get a real one through medical channels on the cheap
>>7797019you should avoid drawing lines that arent there. the ass on the right middle one for example has two lines that arent really there. i sometimes forget thinking about negative space a lot, but reminding myself to see the grander shape and relations of things helps getting the form right. it's just a matter of repetition. maybe some quick gesture session will help you with just getting the gestalt of the figure right
about 10 minutes each i think
>>7797422Thx. I would definitely recommend to buy a real one. (i mean real as physical, real real human skull are very expensive)This one was sold for medical students, would recommend to buy one like this. Decorative skull are very laissez faire with anatomy and proportions.
>>7794586Did this one again. Revealed I really gotta think of what the forms of back muscles look like from the side. Also expressing the transition from ribs to oblique to hip when it's all soft.>>7797368Could work. You should be ready to pay more than you expect. $25/hr, including time they spend changing/getting ready/ on break. Maybe have an agreement that makes it clear the photos will be used in exactly what way too.>>7797406Better job with values, measuring needs work next.>>7797414Look up bridgeman's 5 forms of the face & really spend time at the beginning getting those in perspective right, then letting them be a guide to which sides/planes are in the light and not. Right now the 'corner' of the skull pointed toward the viewer is really flattened out.. But good work, you're moving forward.>>7797019Idk, maybe spend time memorizing proportions & drawing from memory. 60+ minutes is too long for these.
>>7797498>forms of back muscles look like from the sidethink of the shoulder blade skelly foremostly and you should be good. and the spine obviously, as main guide of placement
>>7797498Yeah the problem with the upper part of the skull, was it being too light. The lamp was very near, so it looked somewhat flat irl.I wasnt sure what to, so i left it to the end. But in the end, there was no more value left to show the form. While drawing, i googeld what to do but didnt found a good answer.I think in the Russian Academic school, they draw the light parts darker, to be able to show the form better. I think thats what i should have done, or not.Pic related was a reference for what i wanted to achieve, but i lost it completely in the process.
fun session >>7797498Really like that pose, great job! I think arching and twisting could make it more interesting and less rigid. In profile poses, I’ve read that adding a little triangle shape (scapula) in the background of the figure can add depth.>>7797406stop smudging its a bad habit
>>7793639When people draw this stuff how big is the paper? I don't really draw trad but I can't fathom how somebody blends so well with graphite on that foot unless the paper is huge
quick timelaps ^^
>>7792647Where do you get your refs from?
>>7797433>you should avoid drawing lines that arent thereunfortunately, the human body isn't made up of lines, where I put down my strokes is mostly blind guesswork and seeing where others put theirs, besides contours>>7797498so, from the feedback I've received so far I guess I should be aiming to draw faster, not better, even though I can't draw a decent figure *without* a time limit. sounds reasonable. did an hour of 15min figs
>>7798383so you just rawdog everything?
>>7798512If i draw from reference yes, otherwise if i draw from imag, i usually construct the forms in my mind and draw as simple as i can.
>>7798467>so far I guess I should be aiming to draw faster, not better, even though I can't draw a decent figure *without* a time limit. sounds reasonableI mean, you don't have to take anyone's advice if you don't want to, or you can modify it to fit what you need. People are just offering it since you're asking but if you think you need unlimited time then just do it?
>>7798532I do take advice when it's something tangible and can be applied to my process>but if you think you need unlimited timeclearly I don't know what I need since I've yet to make any progress, but advising a /beg/ to put a time limit on his figures seems to me, at least outwardly, aloof
>>7798563>aloofWasn't one of the replies but almost every single time you post you're either complaining or being aggressive so I dunno why you'd expect people to not match that energy. You're also really not nearly as bad as you think you are or make yourself out to be, but 90% of the time issues are solved from mileage. Just doing both what you said you wanted/what they suggested would help. You're also underestimating the amount of time it takes to see significant progress. If you tried recognizing the amount of effort and the sheer number of drawings the artists you like took to git gud, instead of handwaving it away as talent, you'd feel more satisfied with the progress you've made so far
>>7798572oh, so it's simply a mileage issue? I've been drawing for about 8 years now, stagnating, what's another 8 gonna give me? you can spend an infinite amount of time on a skill, but if do you so wrong, or with incomplete knowledge, there's no getting better. yet I'm told to 'just keep drawing'>also really not nearly as bad as you think you are or make yourself out to bean autistic child scribbled in his notebook and you're patting him on the back, saying what a promising artist he is. maybe I wouldn't be as combative if you treated me with enough respect to say I suck upfront
>>7798600>maybe I wouldn't be as combative if you treated me with enough respect to say I suck upfrontYou don't suck, you're just doing a few things that is hurting your drawings. It's like if you're driving somewhere and you take a wrong turn, you don't suck at driving you just took a wrong turn- easily remedied you'll still get there. Take the other post connecting the ass in that other post, the line does not convey form and flattens out that section of the figure, if you experimented with fixing it, maybe just drawing the crack or connecting the other cheek and leaving the human mind to complete the line maybe it wouldn't look so jarring. Also pay attention to negative space. Beating yourself up will probably tire you out more than anything.
>>7798467Charcoal guy here. These are 15 minutes? They're not bad desu. Like yeah, I see flaws, but you're hitting landmarks well, proportions are mostly decent, and you're conveying form with overlap lines pretty good. They don't look 45 minutes different from your 2 hour drawings. What's an example of work you'd like yours to look like? Also, can you look at a pose & draw the skeleton? Not a mannequin, but skeleton with basic anatomical accuracy
>>7798615>you should avoid drawing lines that arent there>the line does not convey form and flattens out that section of the figurewhat does that mean. how do you decide where to put down a mark, and what kind of mark, for that matter. look at this fig, for example>>7798613I understand why you'd put down the contours, they outline the silhouette. but what are these little notches on her left arm that look like leftovers that hadn't been erased. what about this fig>>7798383there's a ton of tiny scribbles all over the body, why are they there
>>7798632there's no artist I'm aiming to emulate. I have a long list of artists I follow on instagram, and their styles vary drastically, I'm not sure it'd be relevant to post them. that said, I like the work of pretty much everyone who posts here, except maybe the hyperrender guy. I've never drawn a full skeleton, or tried to draw one underneath a reference. I think in shapes and symbols
>>7798365>stop smudging its a bad habitThe fuck are you talking about, thats charcoal?
i feel like i'm getting the hang of it the more i do, despite some failures (not pictured), the rate of passable is higher. 48 and 49 really felt good. it's also amazing how far the ribcage goes down, so very close to the hips
>>7798644all those "scribbles" ae indication for the form and also muscles or bone-landmarks, which also gives the figure "weight" and it helps me to know which direction the form is facing; see it as tiny bits of cross-contours.
>>7798734didn mean to offend by calling them scribbles
>>7797019
>>7798651>except maybe the hyperrender guyWho?
tired but at least 1 fig>>7798675Stop smudging the charcoal with your finger. Smudging isn’t essential, and you don’t yet have the skill to use it effectively. Your edges and contrasts are poor, which is why your drawing looks blurry, soft, and undefined. Practice gradient exercises with charcoal instead.>>7798732good job, too much emphasis on the ribcage but keep going.>>7798772I like the bottom left one, the others feel a little stiff.
>>7795769The deed is done, i painted the whole backlog. It took me 3 days. I’m totally spent for like the rest of the month>>7795894I like the chunks. You can cheat a bit and paint the negative space black too and it will help carve out the shapes and cover any mistakes. It also makes them look cooler.>>7796826I dont have the attention span to paint folds of clothes without boobs or legs. I have made peace with never learning.>>7798450I’m on a discord server and the owner just pulls refs from Pinterest for a little drawing contest thing>>7798467Honestly these look just as good as your 2 hour figs without comparing them directly side by side. Also, i probably spent 2 hours on each of the figs i jsut did when you divide up the total time. I know that feel of spending too much time when you thought it was going to be quick. Anyways, dont get TOO hung up on the time, sometimes it’s fun to change things up and go fast especially if you feel like you are hitting a wall. I’m pretty sure you’re just trolling us anyways to keep the thread spicy. I enjoy seeing your posts.>>7798512Such a great way to describe it
>>7799693>Stop smudging the charcoal with your finger. Smudging isn’t essential, and you don’t yet have the skill to use it effectively. Your edges and contrasts are poor, which is why your drawing looks blurry, soft, and undefined. Practice gradient exercises with charcoal instead.Post your charcoal work.
>>7799827your work effort is as always very admirable. something that i look up to. that hank hill looking guy is very funny and i love the lady in red on the bottom right. thats a very cute pose. i'll try the negative space adivce tomorrow, today i'm out of concentration fuel for some reason.
Just a quick Louvette Sketch
Lol. Well, at least I drew today.>>7799890He's not wrong. Smudgingbis super important with charcoal if you want to render quickly, but you need to be real strong at controlling gradation and value and edges, so it's best to work without smudging for a while till you have that down. And then once you do smudge it usually shouldn't be with your finger, but with a stump and you use it like you're painting.
>>7800743>>7799890I did picrel with smudging a couple years ago. But I did a number of sight-size cast drawings with zero smudging before that.
Resting poses>>7799827I really love the tone you got on the pantyhose, great job.>>7799890>Post your charcoal work.Would it make any difference? It sounds to me like you’re already set on your way of doing things, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Cheers. Maybe this great video will be helpful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQpM9IDV794>>7800230Good job! I think resting, leisure, and relaxed poses are the hardest to get right. In yours, the shoulders and head give the opposite feeling of relaxation, she looks more like she just woke up and is looking around to see what happened. Try keeping some asymmetry in the shoulders and letting the head rest on something, like a pillow or even a hand if you want it to stay upright.>>7800743I like the face great job>>7800746really nice
30mins>>7798772great figs, if the giraffe neck on the top right is an intentional joke. someone said they look stiff? I don't get it>>7799827>these look just as good as your 2 hour figswhile I understand this was meant as an off-hand compliment, it's actually pretty sad
>>7800863
>>7800863i don't know either why he said they are stiff except one, i can see some "stiff" points but the over-all figure come across as "fluid".Here another timelaps^^
>>7794876Felt pretty rusty after not doing these for a few days>>7795769>Why do you draw the hoops?mostly just to help define the direction and perspective>More importantly why no boobs????With these drawings I generally just try to capture the gesture and the main structures (ribs/pelvis/limbs) in a way that can be built upon later
>>7801131Très bien
>>7801131thats a very cool drawing!>i don't know either why he said they are stiff except oneThis is the best way I can explain it: the hips and chest feel parallel to me, which makes the figure look straighter. What I see in all the figures I like is that they push the hip angle to create more balance and rhythm>>7801696great job, those lines are also used by josh black very handy !
>>7801817Yep, god himself suggests this.
Yep, god himself suggests this.
>>7801857>>7801855>>7801817Jfc I'm struggling
How do I do the "fix" step correctly when studying how to draw the torso muscleshttps://youtu.be/qdIRzwepQME
>>7801924ecorche is biting off more than you can chew atm, desui would just do the muscle forms instead. if you really want to do the video, instead of drawing from a ref, draw from a drawing. you can go off the marks the artist made instead of deducing what to do from a photo, then you have a clear reference for how to fix mistakes
This one is really hard, not sure if it is the angle or the size, but it looks completely crooked. >>7800746>But I did a number of sight-size cast drawings with zero smudging before that. And? What exactly are you trying to communicate?>I did picrel with smudging a couple years ago.So you think your skill is so much above mine, that you deserved to use the forbidden smudging technique and i am not? You arent that good, anon. The lover part of the body is elongated, the volume of anatomy is not properly defined. Looks like you spend more time drawing whatever it is in the background, than the figure itself.By the way, smudging is the standard modus operandi with charcoal.>>7800800>Would it make any difference?Yes, it would show how strong the Dauning Krueger effect is in you.>Maybe this great video will be helpfulHe is smudging his charcoal, you should probably leave a comment and tell him how wrong he is.>>7800743>you need to be real strong at controlling gradation and value and edgesYeah right and you learn it by not doing it?>And then once you do smudge it usually shouldn't be with your finger, but with a stump and you use it like you're painting. No you dont, i use my finger for it. You have obvously no idea what you are talking about. I have drawn the skull you are refering to with natural charcoal. A paper stamp would lift it of, instead of smudging. You cant hatch with standard natural charcoal as well. What motivates you giving andvice in a topic, you are obviously not nearly good enough to do so?
>>7802142Your skull lacks of form, nearly all shapes are brocken and all forms are crooked, the shading doesn't show the "durability" of the subject nor fo the forms. It seems like you yet doesn't know hot to translate the directions of the forms onto paper for what you see in life; usually it is the same ability as to draw from photos, you ahve to take your sight on the angles, e.g. and feel the form with your eyes (like it touches the surface and slides the area with)....other than that your shadows and lighting must have need some work also to show the viewer a clear distinction between them.
>>7802250Last night i felt like i had a stroke or something. I measured some point using an experimental technique multiple times, but they looked extremely crooked.Today i measured normal and fixed the worst mistakes. But still, probably the hardest drawing i ever made, dont know why, maybe its the bigger than life size.>It seems like you yet doesn't know hot to translate the directions of the forms onto paper for what you see in life; usually it is the same ability as to draw from photosWhat? And, no its not the same as drawing from a photo. Its way harder. But hopefully better for the development in the long therm.
Normally you measure with a pencil on your arms length, right? And then you measure your drawing and while doing so, youre pressing your pencil on to your paper. But its hard to measure 60-70-80% exactly with a pencil. And my drawing is wider and higher than my pencil. So my plan was to simply draw a scale on a stick and measure both the skull and the drawing from a distance.Like pic related. Sounds good in theory, but something went very wrong in praxis.Still, i dont think a pencil is the best tool for meassurement.I have golden ratio cirle, i think a similar device but with more practical ratios could be usefull.
>>7802286It is the same; ofc its not the same of you stricly copy the photo; yet if ypu draw from a photo with the mindset to translate the forms you see in the photo than usually the same "ability" is needed for live drawing. The only reason live drawing seems harder is that you have to translate the subject directly as you see it and you have all the "layers" infront of your eye-sight. Yet live-drawing is not "harder" as frawing from photos with the mindset of understanding thw pose, e.g.
some morpho to start the week>>7801857Bridgman is indeed a great book>>7802075great skin, I love when brown skin has that reddish glow to it.>>7802142don't crash out, relax.>>7802803nice gesture
test
>>7796985>>7804726oh thank goodness it worked.I haven't been able to post for like a week because my fucking IP range was banned or some shit like that.
>>7804739i have had some issues with butts recently, but yours look very nice. just getting it looking right and natural can be tricky. tl:dr nice ass.
>>7804753well just like anything it helps to know the underlying structures. For a long time i didn't really realize how big the pelvis was and just how high up in the torso are the iliums. But i'd say don't construct from the forms unless it's a specific anatomy study. Focus almost entirely on silhouette. then subtly indicate anatomy later.Big thing that helped me understand are the butt muscles are kind of shaped like a butterfly. Also, videos of nude women walking can help get a sense of the form. Or better yet stand in a mirror and move your hips around to see what's going on.
Here are my 100 gestures. My focus was just getting back into it and simple shapes rather than accuracy.
>>7804939Great job! You had an awesome streak in poses 71–80. One thing I’ve noticed is that your shoulders can look a bit stiff and symmetrical. Shoulders carry a lot of gesture and are a great compositional tool to make the figure more dynamic. I’d also love to see a more acute break in the torso so it doesn’t read like a simple tube.really nice work tried some of my favorite poses
>>7804802>Or better yet stand in a mirror and move your hips around to see what's going on.that'll only help me if i wanted to draw IRL hank hill. heh.>>7804939very good effort. i shall continue as well, the thread is filling up and i got like 30 something to go!
>>780207515 minute quickposes tests
>>7805236Thanks for the feedback, I'm going to work on that !
>>7805337each is 15 mins?
I dont really like it, but i want to push through to finish it. Any tips?
>>7806996No one here is good enough to give you advice lol
>>7784783I wanted to try this pose. I can see I made the legs a lot shorter.
Recent life study >>7806996I think this looks great, just push the maxilla forward just a tad bit more next time. It’s a bit stiff in the drawing . The perspective is a tad bit off too, I think that the chin should be moving to a higher vanishing point to create a 90 degree angle. Also, darkening your darks (especially in compression areas like between the teeth) would go a long way
>>7807114not a lot, it's mostly the left foot ankle and also the foot needing to be a bit lower i think, in order to make sure the stance/perspective is correct. and obviously you made the tummy stylistically cuter and thinner, and that's okay, but it might make the legs seem a bit stockier to you. the lady in the picture doesnt look particulary big anyway.
>>7801696more>>7801817>those lines are also used by josh black very handyI hadn't heard of josh black before, just looked at his stuff and he seems like a pretty good resource. Thanks anon.>>7804009Nice studies>>7805337These were 15 minutes? I kneel
>>7807161Yeah, I usually make tiny waists.A few more sketches I did after that one
I cant find a reference for this pose and it's making me feel like I have a learning disability... any help?
>>7807807try to find references of the specific body-parts and add the parts together.
I think im done, in the end it was mostly rendering practice and remembering how to draw with charcoal. Otherwise, im not really happy, with depicting the form, especially the upper part of the skull.>>7807069No one is into academic drawing?>>7807137Thx, changed some of the thing you was talking about.
>>7807137>>7807836I’m into academic drawing, that’s why I felt qualified to respond lolIf you’re unsatisfied with this, maybe give it a shot in pen. Pen does a good job of teaching form
>>7808146My guy is skipping arm day
>>7808152He is unfortunately lol
>>7808146Pen is no fun on a vertical surface.I want to use charcoal and graphite for a while.
>>7808146Why is the pelvis cube in his belly?
>>7808181Didn’t really go the way I planned desu. Someone was sitting down in front of me and it was a bit hard to place it accurately >>7808176That’s fair
This one was super hard. Gotta give chairs more attention
>>7808298Perspective and proportions are wacky. Not only proportion of the body like the right leg is way too long, but of the proportions on the chair are off as well.
>>7808298Most definitely. It was a tough one. I need to work on scaling with a small piece of paper because my sketchbook isn’t very big
>>7808331Is for >>7808318
Back to the shape tool and magnet brush grind>>7806996>>7807836Great effort, great fixes those take a lot of work. I still think your contrast control is the thing holding you back the most. As for tips or ideas, when drawing from life one useful tool is a stop motion camera app. It allows you to overlay your work against the subject fairly easily so you can check your accuracy. As for the skull, I struggle with the maxilla too. Something I picked up from some studies is that the canine teeth provide a nice rhythm to define the main planes in that area, and a good way to keep the volume consistent is to maintain a parallel gap between the maxilla and the nasal aperture.>>7807807try superpose that pose is fairly common in beach photoshoots.>>7807114good job, with longer shins it would look more proportional, but the gesture is very good
>>7807114>>7807803such an appealing brush...
>>7808454>contrast controlWhat do you even mean by that?
>>7808597Yeah, found it this year, it makes my sketching feel enjoyable so I usually stop and avoid finishing it lolI really like yours too, I love the inner lines, I was actually taking some of your references to try them out myself>>7792562>>7792705
>>7786156
>>7808597please anon what brush is it
>>7784565Usually I focus a lot on what I know from anatomy books. This time I tried to focus on what I am seeing, and to be more relaxed.
>>7808616I meant it mostly in terms of value and the general light and shadow statement. The thing I do not like about your setup is the lighting. It is set up in a way where no meaningful shadows are created, so you end up with an illustration where only the background has the darkest values, the subject has all the light values, and the mid values show up only as very shy core shadows on the subject. Try setting your lighting to a single light source with a little bounce light on the opposite side, and focus on getting a shadow shape that makes the form of the subject more readable. For example, I got this by making the background mid gray and pushing the subject’s dark and light values.
>>7809092nice ref =.="
>>7809107You've identified a very real, significant problem:>you end up with an illustration where only the background has the darkest values, the subject has all the light values, and the mid values show up only as very shy core shadows on the subject.but your solution is a complete non sequitur and suffers from the same issue making the drawing look stuck on.
>>7809107Yeah, of course the drawing is very boring. But thats what it looks like irl as well. I have fluorescent tubes in my room, so the light is very flat. I would need to change my set-up to make the lighting more dramatic.>>7809205I havent drawn in a while, was buissy with painting. Most of the time i followed the French approach. Especially Bouguereau was a big inspiration, and his skin values are very light, very compressed. When he draws sketches for his art he is more or less drawing the outlines. I dont like the French way of drawing, but i like how they paint. But then i decided to go back to drawing, and work more on anatomy and form. But for this i prefere the Italian approach. But Italian mannerism is a little bit too much. So in the end i prefere the Russian method most, which is 70% Italian and 30% French, what i think is a nice balance. But my art right now is more like 70% French and 30% Italian. Maybe thats the problem.
>>7810013This is really nice. Try to thin out the wrist area and darken your darks though
>>7811409yo thanks, did some adjustment, did you mean like this?
obsessed with hands lately, allowed here? the thumb and the part connecting the thumb to the palm always give me the most struggle… read the morpho book but it was pretty sparse. Anyone have good tips/feedback?
>>7812634check out the george bridgeman anatomical book, it has very extensive hand sketches and explanations right from the getgo and it will make more sense if you do the studies a couple of times. this one isnt that bad, just some minor refinements and you will be golden sooner than you think
>>7812542Yup, much better.
>>7812634Study hands from life alongside other artists. Like the other anon said Bridgman is good. Paul Richer is nice too
Learning proportions.
>>7812757Good stuff anon
is there a site or resource that clearly shows insertion points? where muscles meet and overlap on the skeleton, anatomy for sculptors has a few but not a lot. i'd prefer image diagrams please i don't want to read too much
>>7813038Complete anatomy app by elsevier

>>7813038The diagrams in Eliot Goldfinger - Human Anatomy for Artists are very clear. Red marks the insertion/attachment points.
>>7813047bump this question because.is there at least a diagram fitting to my case? Like craig mullins' but...tens of it. a whole set, but not the intro and the cover either.
>>7813055any sources that take fat into account? we're not just drawing skin wrapped around muscle
>>7808616why do you act like such a dick bro
>>7813277This is really good, but I feel like there should be more areas of low detail on the skin, like the quadriceps on the left. Is that Stefania Ferrario on the right?
ive been taking figure drawing classes for 2 semesters and i feel like i've hit a plateau. ive been stagnating for the past 1-2 months and im losing the motivation to draw or study outside of class. i dont know where to go from herepicrel are 5s
Some old shit
>>7813291Morpho has a book about drawing fat people. Study from life too
>>7812887Thx, anon.>>7813312What do you even mean by that?
>ive started learning anatomy seriously a couple of weeks ago>95% of art i encpoounter now looks crooked, half of the muscles arent even drawn>90% of artist draw Ecorches without fat, tendors, venes, skin and hair...Shiiiet, learning anatomy is the biggest ego boost ive ever had in drawing. Best way to look down on plebs is learning muscles and shit, feels addictive, man.
>>7814035Can you draw it tho?
>>7814037Thats the hard part, lol. I already cringe hard when i see my art from two months ago, but it will take a lot of practice to see actual improvements. Its like in the first fight between Sasuke and Rock Lee, Sasuke was able to see all the movements of Rock Lee with his Sharingan, but his body wasnt fast enough to react in time and lost.
>>7814035Anatomy don't mean shit if you can't draw boxes gud. The most perma-amateurs in my area draw these super detailed ecorches where they include everything but it's formless & flat.>>7813722Pretty gud>>7813712Learn facial features. Focus on solidity (you have some, but it's slippery). Boxes boxes boxes, be less sloppy
>reminder you can make it without talent>some old 4chan bullshitWhy keep taking one up your ass here then? what, are you like, actually are, mentally backwards? Guess you didnt work thru art either. Only in psychiatry or some shit where you can flaunt mental illness terms because, really, there's no competition in that either.
some quick smut >>7809129nice shapes>>7809205>but your solution is a complete non sequitur and suffers from the same issue making the drawing look stuck on.I didn't say I did a fix, but rather a quick visual example of what I meant. I just scooped up the mid values to make them darker, and made the darks lighter. You went beyond that and started thinking about edge control with the values nice work on the mandible.>>7809479Just buy a cheap sheet of black cardboard (or paint one) and a styrofoam plank, and you’ll have a nice setup to control light more effectively.>>7813291Gottfried Bammes, any idea you can think of for drawing the figure, he has it covered: muscle insertions, fat pads, silhouettes, masses, topology, abstractions, etc.>>7813712If you’re going to use chalk, pastel, or charcoal sticks, you need to draw bigger. The nice thing about sticks is that you can create large shapes easily. Love the blue and orangey chalks.>>7813047???
Super happy looking through the thread, always makes me want to draw, great motivation all around. I've been trying to draw mainly with a brushpen for the last couple weeks. Couple quick drawings in my downtime. Bought a couple small sketchbooks I plan on taking with me so I can draw on the go. I want to do POV drawings, seems like a great practice. I was struggling a little bit with joint/finger pain so I've been trying to draw as light and quick for a while now, lately I haven't been having any issues but I still try to stick with multiple short drawing sessions.
been drawin' lately
>>7815771is this possible natty
>>7815852probably ~_~
>>7785629Pick up the Morpho books by Michel LauricellaGreatest combination of anatomically useful info for artists out there. And it's primarily visual. The original is okay, but find one on skeleton or muscle. The books can fit in your pocket, they are very portable
Back again with more figgies. Found a model in the ref thread whose torso I ended up liking a lot. Didn't bother timing and just went at it until I felt done with them.Trying to add more depth and definition to figures with just line is pretty tough.>>7815771>>7816330These are nice. I'm jelly of your line confidence and accuracy. I should try to color mine sometime.
>>7815771>>7816330something about the proportions is iffing me... either that or your ref is a manlet
>>7818369
>>7818397I like giving longer legs to female figs. I think it looks appealing. stuff like this looks appealing to me>>7809069
>>7818369na, it's just look liek that cause they are buff, so it's natural that they may come across as manlets; yet i oversized some muscles maybe that's why the proportion may come across as "not correct">>7809069and i mostly draw long legs on woman, on men it can look feminine, and most tall man with long legs look Gee ay ypsilon... >_> imo.
>>7818490You're alright man, I was just fucking with you. Females with long, athletic legs are really are also very appealing to me, specially ones with defined and meaty calves. Theres a ratio to it though, Im not a big fan of cankles so my stylizations favor an unrealistic ratio where the rest of a very hefty leg isnt supported by something as thick and shapeless as a cankle. It kinda breaks the 'cadence' of curves that should otherwise continue all the way down to the feet/toes.Another problem, at least for me, has to do with picking what to show..for instance, if Im going to show a midriff/womb, hips-pelfic area into thunderous thighs and further down, I cant just cover all of those wondrous sights with a pair of tits that sag below the navel, which Im also really into and viceversa. Its a cruel sort of dilemma.Btw, your linework reminds me of mungsaman a whole lot, the gesture and movement I should say.(pic related), I dig it.
More old shit >>7818721Love this >>7815771Looks good. Just remember that it’s better to have legs that are too long than too short >>7819333Very nice hands
Not my best hands
some from the refs thread
>>7815162smut part2, twisting and foreshortening the torso make for really appealing shots.>>7815682Brush pens are pretty difficult to use. Yoji Shinkawa is an incredible artist who uses the brush pen as his main medium, his figures are super graphic. great job.
What was the name of the teacher in the belly grab meme? The one where you see him explains something about belly fat on a board and the next picture is hand grabbing it.I remember a course on figure drawing similar to Force by mike mattesi but less stylized and believe it's him
>>7820489Glenn Vilppu
>>7820493yes!bless you anon
>>7820798not a figure
>>7820806Its, like, your opinion, man.
>>7820826well, it's also fact.
it is really good, though
Are there any specific male reference packs you guys would recommend? Male references seem harder to find.
awful session.>>7821833Usually, male models are awful; they often don’t know how to pose, or they have unesthetic muscle proportions (like big biceps but small triceps and delts). That said, Yohji Leão is a great model, he has defined muscles, not too bulky, and he knows how to pose. But honestly, I prefer drawing from sports; the poses are cooler, feel more natural, and have more intent. In most male photo sets, the actions they perform usually don’t look convincing.
i hate references with bad lighting, why did i even picked this.... i tried making sense of the hands, but there are so many noisy value shifts
back
i had it but then i lost it. but i'll get it back again
getting back to figure drawing.
we need a new thread
I'M WASTING PAPER BY DOING SHITTY LINE OF ACTON GESTURE DRAWINGS AAAAAAAAAAAAAA
