What is /ALT/?
If you're looking for a place to post your cartooning then you've found the right general. This is /ic/s 1st and only merged hub where both Eastern and Western stylization can coexist peacefully, hence the double title.
>Rules & Guidelines
(1) Any form of cartooning is welcome; so submit and receive feedback from others. (2) Please resize your images before posting. (3) Share your knowledge and (4) Remember to not be afraid of asking for critique. Most importantly, keep discussion at a civil level.
>I came for anime. Why does the image OP say cartoons general?
To distinguish from the anime study thread (janitor supported). Please post your studies there and personal work goes here.

this looks rly cool, the timing and movement feels natural, i did a small autistic ass/hip anatomy breakdown. im sure you know most of these things but applying them in motion in and weird angles is tricky, just adding something like the venus dimples would help clarify the form imo
sry for the shit quality but i couldnt fit everything in canvas

Im not sure what exactly came over me, but a little over a year ago I decided to study the SpongeBob artstyle and challenged myself to design incidental characters that would seamlessly fit into the show, based on real species. Then I got the bug again about a week ago and did some more. It’s a far departure from my usually style, which is more rigid and less exaggerated. It was a fun exercise though, since it let me try something new.

I guess the simplest way to start would be keeping a cohesive palette. With a composition centered on the character colors will be pretty forgiving as a long as you aren't using some super contrasty colors where you don't want the eye to fix on, those value contrasts are generally saved for the character or anything framing and balancing the painting. I also recommend checking out Kaneoya Sachiko art, he has such a great range that it's interesting to see how he can use the same character in different styles, he'll make even simple, non detailed bgs work with his palette

My style is always, every time thick outlines with pastels and my method of color picking is all through a premande palette, I have seen good backgrounds in art and have some good inspo but it seems to be taking me a lot to understand how to on average replicate
The background style I actually want to most emulate is backgrounds like in the powerpuff girls, simple and heavily stylized with no lines or funky lines
All I know right now is... limit my colors and make things in confident, funky shapes and then texture them
It is harder than it looks though

The bottom panel just doesn't work like this. You should either do it vertically to the right (possibly even at an angle) to make it a spread or do it on a separate page.
Because right now your first three panels all push your eye to the right and then the last one drops to the bottom.

Try to experiment with light more. It’s easier to understand values when you have a deeper understanding of how light interacts with objects/forms

Looking at your process, it seems a little bit backwards in terms of how you should study light. Like the people at the bottom for example. I think you should establish the light source first and then add the shading of the basic forms afterwards. Since you’re filling it with mostly darks initially, it allows a lot less moving room for the lights because you’re not establishing the shadow in relativity to the light, you’re establishing the light in relativity to the shadow. I would recommend doing two value studies and doing things like pic rel

that makes sense anon. I have been going in with a dark value first because I like hard contrast, but I haven't been thinking about where the light is coming from in my practice. I watched a short video on the subject and decided to stick to (mostly) three values for the figure. I focused more on the spheres being the source of light, but I also felt the gaps in my knowledge when trying to plot the shadows

either way, thanks for the feedback. I am grateful when /ic/ can point me in the right direction
>>
>>7825272
that's a rough reference to use for how you're using it
she's clearly stable and crouching on a glass pane, while your work has no sense of her crouching on any sort of plane. it looks very awkward.
sorry if this sounds harsh. i don't know how to put it any other way.
>>
>>7825289

I understand, no problem with the crit

I rarely am 100% locked to a reference unless I'm actively studying. I wanted the character to be floating, so I'm relying on my knowledge from previous studies to pull the foot into the foreground. it's also why I didn't really include much of the glutes - you can see in the ref her heel sits between her cheeks and I didn't want that
