So I picked up this starter kit but I've never really painted before, at least nothing that I didn't throw away afterwards.
It might sound like a very stupid question but like how do I paint something, like let's say I want to paint some woods or the sea or some shit, what's my first step in learning how? How do I put colors on that page.

Try painting studies in sepia/burnt umber first. This is what my art college had us do to learn painting values. After that you can learn color which is much more difficult.

>how do I paint something
>what's my first step in learning how?

Well the shortest answer is you cant. To paint something you have at least understand values before doing any colors otherwise everything you do is going to be fucked. As to first step to learn (assuming you are not a beginner to art) you have to do value studies, these videos shed some light on the subject:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5P6gaSJCgBo&pp=ygURYnJva2VuZHJhdyB2YWx1ZXM%3D
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6-NhdEPKGk&list=PLH2DDMpMRD5hKAvEATNZPk9SWJkt5Yn6J

But remember that colors come later, like values>shapes>colors>composition etc. Best you find some course or tutorial and follow it. I would recommend Marco Bucci as he is really pleasant to watch and gives out info in easily digestible format, other than that there's that proko course for beginners to advance also teaching everything about drawing/paiting yet its not really advanced as in you will get the basics but also be required to supplement other info yourself if you want to get deeper on the subject matter. All these courses are available online

https://online-courses.club/radhowto-seeing-colors-by-peter-chan/

Like with color course I'm checking out.

Do people genuinely work at absurd resolutions, or are they just working at normal res then upscaling when they export?

I’ve always shared work at base res but I want to be able to share stuff in higher quality. So, I’m wondering if I need a larger canvas size when I start a project or if I only need to set my export settings higher?

Is there a noticeable difference either way?

Is it better to stick with a single book or course at a time and work through it from start to finish or is it fine to jump between multiple at the same time?
>>
>>7800580
I think it's better to jump between things (within reason).

I say within reason because, if you find yourself learning a dozen different things at the same time, you’ll need to slow down. you’re not going to retain what you learn while taking in so much at once, so, chew your food thoroughly (savor whatever it is you're learning) and really try to understand what you're practicing in the now, apply it to current work and move onto the next thing.

ideally, you always want to be working on whatever weakness you have at the moment. (read books as you need them, work through courses as the skills they teach become more relevant)
only stick to things that really interest you. like a book/course you can’t put down.

Ive been interested in drawing for years but i hadnt drawn for more than maybe 20 hours total in the whole of my life including childhood.
Why is that?
I also dont like the act of drawing. It brings no joy to see the end result because i suck and the act of it makes my fingers hurt and bores me.

In spite of all of this i still daydream about drawing/being good and would like to accomplish it. I just dont think its possible.

someone explain to a retard like me why the edges of some shadows are sometimes the most saturated part of the art?
>>
>>7804930
On skin specifically it is what it says, subsurface scattering. You're seeing light that diffused through the skin and is reflecting back red. It's too dull to show up in the bright parts, but it's visible in the shadows.

If it's not on skin, it's mostly a cargocultism. The red layer in old photos would overexpose and create that red glow effect, artists copied it and now apparently forgot why it's there. Now it's just A Thing You Do.
>>
>>7804936
to add to this, if it isn't on skin then it can happen to less dense material of a similar composition like a grape or translucent stone for example, anything where there are multiple layers for light to bounce back from, it doesn't necessarily have to be red just a more saturated colour
>>

I've just read through the hardcore guide in the beginner thread. I still don't understand what everyone in the screencaps means by "copy" and "study" references. Are they literally just putting a reference on one side of their canvas, and then drawing and trying to emulate it on the right?

Depends on what you are studying. Sometimes your goal is to copy as accurately as possible, to train your observational/accuracy skills. Other times you are focusing on color, so it doesn't matter as much if the proportions are off a bit.

Trying to apply this type of STEM-y autistic line of inquiry to something so subjective as art is your first and biggest pothole
The machine relies on the input, it can't experience things like the famous "feel the form" meme
It's always 2 steps behind actual humans and will remain that because it's nature is fundamentally contrary to its goals
There's no one size fits all explanation, it's nature will always show through one way or another, no matter in how small of a detail
If you still find this a somehow super interesting dilemma I think you should just quit art and pursue something strictly autistic like shader programming because you clearly dont have the right mindset for this art thing

I’m taking it right now. It’s really good honestly. It’s helped me to commit to a specific piece/drawing, when I usually stop in the middle to do something else. Your experience may differ but it does its job.
>>
>>7808119
start from general, big shapes, and do multiple passes adding more and more detail each time. If you watch any drawing video/speed paint, you'll see this. It'll get to a point where the image looks "done", yet there's half a video left. and every few mins you'll keep going "ok that surely is done right" but more gets added.

It's pretty bad for composition because your values precipitate out of the big groupings and things stop looking cohesive.

Also, doesn't account for highlights. If you want to do it, overlay is usually better because you can do highlights and shadows on the same layer.

is there a recommended book or a image database with facial expressions?
I'm too autistic to do it from my head alone without reference.
>>
I'm going to ask the dumbest question asked so far.
There are several stories written down in my notes, stuff for writing a comic/manga of them.
I've been drawing casually for 10 years now, and I'm nowhere near good or appealing.
That's where the dumb question gets in.
If I want to draw a comic/manga, should I train by drawing comic/manga?
Alternatively, what would be a good restart point to do that?
-
And another: what does it mean if when I look at my drawings most of them are of wildly different styles and skill levels from each other?
I feel like I have no control over how well or what I draw.
Is that due to the severe lack of fundamentals? Do I just not understand what I'm doing and so cannot replicate it at all?
I was trying to pick something representative out of my drawings folder, but it's all too wildly different from each other to make for an useful sample unless I pull the entire folder here.

You need a course to study how to make manga. Go into the archives for the video thread that was up recently (It fell off page 10) and look for the course on Coloso by the author that wrote Mushibugyo. For the second question, that is a good thing to have. They said in the animator's survival kit that eventually draftsmans should be able to copy someone else's style, this is especially useful for doing inbetween animation.
>>

It asks me for 200$ or to get a premium account on a download site if I go through the psdly. Other piracy sites didn't have it. Even torrent searcher engines didn't find it.
I can't safely put 200$ into a course right now.
Do you happen to have it?

>>
>>7815105
Find artists you like on twitter/Instagram/etc. See if they have "open for commissions" or similar in their bio. or DM them and ask. Let them know it's for album art so you can get the proper copyrights to the image so you are allowed to reproduce it.

I don't know because I don't use them. Lower your pressure requirement in your tablet driver. Heavy pressure is the number 1 thing that causes hand fatigue. Also don't try to draw super perfect lines, this can also cause tensing. Use every tool available if you need that sort of precision like stabilizer, precision mode mapping or specialized software. If it doesn't go away I think you need a longer break.

>>
>>7817215
Make interesting art. There are a billion people who do big tit anime, most of them better than you, there's no reason for anyone to pay you to do it. You're not going to get commissions unless you offer something better, not cheaper, than everyone else. People who buy commissions are almost never interested in cheap, it's a luxury product and luxury sells on brand identity not price.
>>
Hey /ic/

I'm a newbie and I'm trying to redraw/clean this doujin I like. So far all the speech bubbles and sound effects had simple single-color backgrounds that I could either fill or redraw with my low level of skill.

However, there are several pages with these (pic rel.) half-opaque bubbles that also have this annoying slash pattern all over them and complex backgrounds. It would take me ages to clean these with what I know now. Is there an easier way to do these? Just looking for some tips & tricks I guess.
>>

Just do it. I have a separate account for ocfagging because I don't want to associate my actual account with it.

I am because I'm a cheapo who loves getting 30 dollar comms from random nips on skeb, but you're right that he has to offer something that appeals to me in the first place before I even think about wanting to open my wallet. It doesn't have to be super good or unique, it just has to look nice.

What is THE Conte pencil?
I hear a lot of atelier and academic larper mentioning the Conte pencil. But what exactly is it?
Conte a Paris sells a lot of different pencils, lead, coal, pierre noire... but which one is THE one?
>>
>>7818441
Not necessarily. 3D art, pixel art, and digital art all have a learning curve both for the differences between traditional art and the software itself. What's your end goal? What kind of art do you want to make?
>>

It’s the fusain one that Watts atelier popularized. It’s a charcoal pencil. The pierre noir is compressed charcoal pencil and you can’t erase that.

Why is thinking while drawing so tough? When I'm not drawing I have a bunch of poses and scenarios in my head. When I sit down and try to consciously hold them in mind while drawing, my shit looks better, but it's so hard to hold onto those images. Do I have a disability?
>>
>>7819289
I've been practicing by just thinking of what "goal" I wanted to achieve in the next few minutes in terms of what I wanted to depict on the canvas, rather than trying to actively think of something in the midst of putting pen to paper. It's very hard to think while drawing at the same time, since you're giving your brain two different things to do, so think of uh, thinking as a separate step from drawing.
>>
>>7819289
Have you considered carrying around a small sketchbook? Being able to do a quick sketch when the inspiration hits you will probably save you a lot of effort later when you can work on it more.
>>
>>7819289
it's a skill you have to practice
visualization is way easier when you are daydreaming. being able to visualize in a way that helps you draw is 100x harder.
>>
>>7812484
recently i have just finished something that took me 60hrish and i had fun and learned a lot, i rarely "finish" something so i'm glad i made it through to the end :)
>>
>>7819289
I think you just don't realize just how malformed your daydreaming visualizations are. Your brain is very good at filling in the blanks and convincing you that you saw a thing when you only ever got a hallucinatory feeling. When you try to interrogate that feeling the illusion falls apart.

Got a weird situation.
I want to start art, but my current social medias I made when I was like 15 went relatively unused sine like 2014.
I want to revive those (a lot are still there) and use those accounts.

Would there be any consequences of reviving old social media accounts that all use the same username for the purpose of art after basically having them abandoned for a little over a decade for some of them?

I made those accounts after having a want to be a youtuber and needed extra accounts but abandoned the idea after seeing what people were putting on Vine. I want to use those accounts for art now.
>>
>>7822795
Why not make a new account? If it's been that long I doubt 99% of your old followers are still around anyway.
If you just want to use those accounts then just make sure you didn't post anything retarded in 2012 so underage faggots can't dig out 15 year old posts to harass you with.

As someone who doodled in school, then did gamedev and his own pixelart and dabbled in blender

Honestly they all kinda pull from each other - I'd suggest drawing normally on the side and focusing on Blender though
Blender has such a higher entry point / learning curve than pixel art and regular drawing - yours could focus on that and in a couple, maybe 3 years be good enough for indie project stuff

Basing this off my own experience working with others in that space
>>
Is it possible that the reason I get frustrated sometimes is because I’m just drawing wrong?
>>
>>7822995
It could be that or it could be that you're trying something too difficult.
Usually what keeps people doing something is that they enjoy it and they can see improvement so it's like a positive feedback loop. If you're doing something too difficult you don't get any enjoyment because you see no improvement and it just leads to you getting frustrated, and it's more like a negative feedback loop.
It's also worth drawing something you actually want to draw so it stays enjoyable.
>>
>>7822925

but it’s also really, really rare i see fanart that feels like they’ve fully caught the essence of the original, though many of them are very close.
i keep trying but like pretty much any learning curve, you find out the closer you get the more nuanced the things you’re missing become, and with each often subtler layered increase in skill you suddenly become able to recognize the issues your previous layer of skill, and so on, ad infinitum.

nta but unironically yeah, you should try finding games or media you enjoy, I've noticed people who are in some sort of community that involves a game or a media tend to draw more and be more passionate about the things they draw which leads them to getting better faster since there is an emotion tethered to their work.lots of studies say that emotions heavily influence how fast/deeply you learn something, and I mean that's pretty intuitive, it's easier to learn about things you care about than ones you don't.

I don't know how else to explain it. Like with pen/pencil. it's a drawing. With digital it seems like it's just shitty due to it being pixelated even with a canvas of like 10000*10000 and 3000 dpi. I can't get past the fact it's not as good to me as paper
