Why do Western mecha look so boring? The Japanese have recently adopted a kind of crappy style too, but in their golden age they created many iconic styles. However, the West has always created robots that look like old war tanks with legs.
>>
Do you guys prefer it when we have endless braindead east west threads or when we had endless jeet AIspam threads

The second, jeets at least are easy to bait and shitting on them is very funny, the east west low resolution retard is just boring and unfunny.
>>
>>7797776
They're both cool. The western style feels more plausible and I remember how cool it was playing Mechwarrior 2 for the first time on a PC with a 3D graphics card. But I also love Voltron, Gundam, etc.

Gundam was the first "real robot" series but was still bridging between super robots and real robots
so the original show still ended up having lots of characteristics of super robots and the rest of the franchise followed the silhouette of the original Gundam

for designers on the right they think "real robot" is putting tanks on legs

Recently? Gundams have been dominant for decades. The most interesting designs in gundam series are always the mobile suits that aren't gundams because gundams are bog standard and all look the same. The coolest gundams were designed by a westerner.

You mean the series that's almost incapable from moving on from it's japanese G1 designs? The show where one of the greatest mecha animators of all time got his start, Masami Obari?
>>
western media sucks ass because it ISN'T made by white people

>the series that's almost incapable from moving on from it's japanese G1 designs?
to be fair that's hasbro being completely fucking retarded in how they handle their own franchises, the g1 inspired stuff is this weird mix of nostalgiabaiting milennials and trying to pull an "everything is canon" retcon but its incredibly half assed so you still end up with a bunch of splintered unrelated continuities
(also objectively the franchise reinassance in pop culture was the bayformers movies, its just that no one wanted toys of those)
>>
>>7799473
you are an npc.
>>
>>7799585
Bayformers fucking sucked. If I were to look at anything that's on the western branch that's amazing it would be Beast Wars, because it is the one thing they can't rebrand or demolish due to it just being uniquely defined and designed.

Anyway Braves and Metal Cardbot are way better and have cooler toys. Hasbro can get fucked lmao.

Western mecha design tends to be stylized tanks and other millitary craft whereas japanese mecha design tends to be different spins on the humanoid mechanical golem formula. Most of it is highly stylized samurai and knight armor. Some like the Zaku IIs take heavy inspo from German WWI troops. Others like the mecha from Big O emanate heavy Art Deco elements. Then there's the whole super robot/Masami Obari school of giving exotic ornaments to muscular humanoid figures.

But to answer your question OP it depends entirely whether you look for something grounded in potential implementation in real life or just something that's cool and pleasing to the eye with disregard for larger ergonomics.

I think everyone here saying japanese designs being mainly human form are talking out their ass. They only really look at the hero units they saw on google or have never actually seen a mecha series before.
>>
They always draw war tanks with legs.
>>
>>7800269
It's all for the most part. The core tenet is that western mecha design focuses on ergonomics while japanese design looks for aethetic appeal first and foremost to better sell any potential merchandise and to appeal to existing fans.

western mecha design has no real concept of ergonomics. if it did, they wouldn't be horrendous blocks with no armor sensibilities, bad seating, and giant glaring "shoot me here" windows all over them. All of the genuinely good western design takes direct influence from other places unless you're talking about, say, Syd Mead or designers influenced by Luigi Colani. (and alot of eastern designers were influenced by Colani thanks to him being so outspoken.) Hell, we have the truly wild and bizarre designers like Kow Yokoyama and Makoto Kobayashi proving that the human form is unneeded for something to stand out and be exciting. We wouldn't have Forever Winter without those influences, ostensibly the most artistically exciting scifi world we've gotten in decades. And this isn't to then denounce western media entirely, as we also have exciting and fun works such as Brigador, Ironwing Valiant, Electro Bop Boxing League, and many other things trying to do something distinct.

This is such a weird and stupid debate desu. It infers that aesthetics for science fiction are exclusively in a bubble and not the wild multicultural influences that they really are. It is, has been, and always will be a conversation. A conversation between designers, pushing ideas to the forefront, breaking the mold, influencing and evolving each other endlessly outside the corporate blackhole, forcing that blackhole kicking and screaming into real design every so often. Only true idiots obsess with the idea of something being squarely this country or that country, east or west. It should be about organic, skeuomorphic, minimalist, futurist, kitche, abstract, grounded, and whatever else might describe a design in a true sense.

tl;dr Get better art sensibilities, actually study for once, and stop thinking about countries.

Don't ever be earnest on an imageboard in the current year. Don't ever put effort into a reply, especially on an imageboard. You showed your hand.

personally my current designer obsession is Choco of Xenosaga fame. Alot of very fun influences all over the place looking at their work!
>>
>>7797776
Because the western ones are heavily inspired by actuall military vehicles and are designed as a natural evolution of them instead of fantasy. Ironically all of the Zeon suits in gundam 79 and some of the feddie suits in zeta are designed the same way

Westerners really flat out refuse to embrace the silliness of a giant robot. They are never ever going to be practical functional machines, they're dumb in real life. So fuck trying to desperately try to make them as
>REALISTIC
as possible. Giant robots will never be realistic because they will never be real. Have fun with the fucking concept already.

Always like the weirdly awkward looking and over weighted mechs from Big O. Massive unwieldy arms, huge legs and feet, entirely ram rod straight torsos. Feels like an interesting middle ground between human shaped and mechanically heavy. And the piston punch is such a cool idea and shift from the usual rocket powered punch or similar.
>>
>>7800314

I wish this wasn't an auto battle rhythm game because I love the style of robots on display. Something in the spirit of Rock 'em Sock 'em Robots

I always liked zoids. There should be more robots based on animals.

There’s no risk in Japan anymore because it’s just anime artists inspired by other anime artists as nauseum.
>>

i actually prefer the more realistic western design. starcraft has great mechs for example.

Asians love "cute" and "stylish," while in the USA they prefer "power" and "wild", This is even reflected in automobiles. While Asians manufacture stylish cars with embellishments for the city, including Toyota trucks, the USA manufactures enormous off-road trucks with powerful engines and imposing bodies to traverse the entire country if necessary. For most countries, a 4-cylinder engine is considered powerful; in the USA, something powerful is an 8-cylinder.

It's a matter of culture.
