how do you elevate creature designs? do you learn ecology and whatnot before hand to get your idea, or draw something cool first and then elaborate and refine from there?

Retarded ass MH design, in game, Arkveld looked like a cross between a bdsm chained woolly mammoth and an owl. The concept art looks far better, but holy shit, does it look like ASS in game. Small details don't really work if it's a subtle design for the MH series.

Study design languages
MonHun has a specific design language for it's monsters (that changed a lot throughout)
Itoh Sei has a different design language to his beasts
Also study nature and draw inspiration from there
