I've watched some of that video game award show yesterday and I've noticed something: how bad (and weirdly similar) all the trailers were.
All they were relying on was shoving as much shit on the screen as possible - there was no focus, no drama, no contrast - just a constant visual diarrhea...
Don't they teach you anything in art school anymore?

Visual diarrhea has been the gaming aesthetic for over a decade now. Compare an arcade game from the 1980s, and how well the characters are set off against the background, to a modern game in the same genre, with the action zoomed way out and every element competing for attention and the whole thing an unreadable mess. Picrel is not cherry-picked and is far from the most glaring example.

its been an issue for a while, even in movies. just because you can do anything and everything doesnt mean you have to. particle effects for example are one of the most annoying things ever shoved onto a screen. i cant tell whats going on anymore as soon as the action gets going. a gen or two ago, you still had limitations that forced you to design something that looks interesting, now its just bigger and more.

the problem I have with E33 and its art. there really isnt a distinct character. visually there is just rock/mask creatures in different shapes. I see they made some creative designs that suit the enviornment. I wonder if there even is a villain in the game. Even the protagonists are just planks, visually and emotionally.

It just reminds me of how boring souls games are to trudge through. Im not asking for a broadway musical but god damn this whole game is lifeless

i quite like the starcraft 2 trailers. i think they're well done and conceptually simple enough (space armies fighting). i personally think that cool cinematic action slop is better than le gameplay demos where the character runs around for 15 seconds because the point of a trailer is to get you excited for new product. if anyone wants a representative example of gameplay, they should watch some youtuber do a review of it.

OP's photo is an example of a movie made by a creatively sterile megacorporation from a franchise that's so mainstream that it will turn a profit no matter how poorly it's done. video games actually have to try to get your attention because there isn't any video game franchise that has star wars or marvel levels of automatic fandom.

Yes but techbros took over. They used consumer data, fed into an AI that gave them the guidelines for the broader market appeal by making things the least offensive possible.

Developer times and cost got so big everybody is playing not to lose. In case the game flops they can shift the blame to somebody else.

People complained about the "woke" times of the 2010s but what comes next is going to be way worse. Good luck.
