if you had the power to force the whole of /ic/ to read one book in its ENTIRETY, which one would it be and why?

Pretty much every beg question about building a healthy mentality around artmaking is answered here about as concisely and constructively as it can be.

This and pic related. Practice and Science of Drawing by Harold Speed. It's probably the most useful book on theory I've read and has several insights into the nature of art and by extension drawing. I really can't recommend it enough.

"But while there is no absolute artistic standard by which accuracy of drawing can be judged, as such standard must necessarily vary with the artistic intention of each individual artist, this fact must not be taken as an excuse for any obviously faulty drawing that incompetence may produce, as is often done by students, who when corrected, say that they 'saw it so.'"

One of my favorite passages, personally.

I wouldn't say in its entirety, but I find "Imaginative Realism" By James Gurney a very helpful book for anyone who wants to paint their little stories and cool ideas that arrive from time to time.

Damn, I started skimming through this. It's amazing how much of the stupid little arguments people have here are eternally relevant and have been discussed more comprehensively and in much more useful detail by people who came before.

Some people believe that copying reality is the main goal of art. If that were the case, then photography would be the highest artistic form. But if what matters is the human process, it makes no sense to criticize conceptual art, which is precisely based on ideas and processes. At its core, this position shows a lack of understanding of art and of how we experience it, and relies instead on the artistic canon as a means of gaining status.

Fun with a pencil.
Getting you faggots discouraged and burned out by drawing floating cartoon heads will lower the competition for people serious about art like me.

Anon... did you think that was a hard book? Who's getting burned out by that?

David Hornung - Color and doing the exercises in it, Robertson - How To Draw, or Barge studies. Any of those would answer so many stupid questions.

I tried reading this after seeing some well-regarded online artists recommend it but it's incredibly dry and not much actually applies to making art. There's one or two decent lines spread throughout chapters of babbling.

This book is a bit better in terms of content since it's a collection of letters sent to students. However, just reading this books won't make you a better artist, it's just things to ponder over which may or may not affect your life at all.

>David Hornung - Color and doing the exercises in it
Someone should make a list of these workbook/workshop-type books.

Unfortunately it doesn't seem a good pdf copy of the 3rd edition was leaked on annas, etc. Only an epub. Good epub though. But the vimeo video links don't work. I still haven't figured out why. Perhaps deleted, his website has no info.

There is a pretty good pdf for the 2nd edition. But it only gives a short tip how to adapt the assignments to computer. The 3rd edition have actual digital assignments with explanations for each chapter.

But enough about Robert Henri's Art Spirit.

fun with a pencil was exactly what it said on the tin; i enjoyed it when i was a teenager, and loomis' dated humor and positive attitude felt genuine throughout the entirety of it and kept me from hating my flawed work too much.

I have the second edition and have only seen that PDF. I did the exercises in gouache and with the CMYK sliders in Clip Studio. What more instruction do you need? You don't need to exactly do every exercise, you pick what suits your interest.

I have a hard copy of the book and have seen the PDF. It's impossible to tell what he's even talking about in the reproductions of the paintings he's mentioned or many references he makes. He states far too many of his opinions as facts and a lot of it isn't actionable unless you were studying in the academy at the time. Out of that context, most of it is useless or opinions that have a 50% chance of meaning anything to you.

I have the cheap Dover print of it but I'd recommend reading the Gurney blog over the book.

I also have the hard copy and Practice and Science of Drawing is littered with bookmars, it's so useful. Not only it contains general advice on composing and balancing a picture it also talks about practical advice on how to do a drawing, both mass and line drawing. It's literally indispensable, the reproductions are just there to guide you. That paired with the oil painting book of his are the ultimate starting guide that will drage you through /beg/ and /int/ phases and then will be useful some more after you get bogged down later. I don't see why would you shun a fantastic resource for some dino-fucker businessman's blog

Pretty much the entire workflow he describes I apply every time I work on a painting, from the hierarchy of forms, tone harmony, to holding the brush by the end (in the digital this is equivalent to working from the shoulder and not the wrist) and mixing the colors.

Schmid's Alla Prima book is basically Speed's Oil Painting book, but with more know-how explanation.
Speed also explains in very simple terms how to judge the quality of one's work and how to think about different kinds of art for yourself. It's an invaluable book that contains basic truths, probably the reason it gets reprinted for a 100 years and some
