After working out the composition, he would isolate each figure and draw studies from a model. Depending on the challenges involved, additional studies would be drawn of details like heads, hands and feet. The figures in the final preparatory drawing would be modified to agree with the classical standard of beauty (or the artist's version thereof). Proportions would be adjusted to the ideal, bellies tucked in, cellulite erased, breasts made more shapely and perfect. Artists like Bouguereau could therefore invent and were not slaves to the model. There is no evidence of Bouguereau using the type of construction that involves boxes and cylinders. However, the underlying principle of that practice, to think in terms of three-dimensional form and to look for, and elucidate, changes in plane, would have been internalized by an artist at Bouguereau's level.
