Both are important and it depends on what you want to draw. But I would practice heads first and then progress outwards from there. People's eyes flick to a face first, and that's the place where small mistakes make the largest difference.

I've seen your work for a while and you've been stagnating pretty hard. Anatomical studies are not what you need right now. You should continue studying figures but focus less on construction and try not to stylize the shapes too much, I think that has really been holding you back. You can be both more accurate and gestural with your figures.

I'm kinda confused, whenever I saw videos where people draw heads, the horizontal line going through the circle is basically exactly in the middle.
I'm checking out hamptons head construction course and his lines are always slightly higher than middle, as seen in pic related.
Does anyone know why? Is it just a personal style / construction thing? Or am I being a dumbo

>>
>>7841732
Not really. You should draw what you see and not what you think you see. Those construction shorthands you are using are not a replacement for what the actual body parts are. Of course you can still use guidelines, but you should try to capture the original shapes from the reference. And do not try to stylize too early because you're starting falling into some kind of symbol drawing.

If what you are doing doesn't start to make sense, try just doodling random overlapping forms (similar to the fourth step at the top of the page) for a while. For me at least, seeing the results after I carelessly doodled them made me think "oh, that looks like it could be x!" and it started getting easier to do it intentionally.
Not sure if it will work for you, but it won't hurt to do it as a warmup.

If we are talking purely drawing, it's basically these in no particular order:
>Observational skill
>Line control
>Shape and geometry
>Perspective
Then comes construction, anatomy, and more recognizable objects such as buildings, vehicles, things, etc. These should be easy to draw, once you've got a better hold of the former from the list.

Here's mine. Not my best, but I like how the hands turned out.
>>7841980
It worked. The robot is cute.
>>7841981
Filtered? I think you did pretty great. I did try out Morpho's stuff, and I've even bought two of his books, but I haven't read them in detail. How are you finding the material?
>>7841995
Great studies, anon. Keep at it.
>>
>>7842020
you barely even drew the hands, where are her fingers? i like the shoes most, they look nice
>>
>>7842020
>How are you finding the material?
Everything except the faces is amazing in my opinion. I think I am slowly beginning to grasp the ever-mysterious "feel the form" thing by using the book. I'm not really reading anything though and instead just trying my best to copy his stuff and understand the logic behind it. Definitely recommend the book to anyone interested in anatomy though keep in mind I'm a pre-beg and this is more or less my first time studying an anatomy book so take my advice with a grain of salt
>>
>>7842026
you accuarcy is insanely good for a so called pre-beg
>>
>>7841946
>such a good anime head
Fuck, I'm so tired of it all
>>
>>7842023
A stylistic choice, though I can see what you mean. At a second glance, her left hand's fingers seems a tad undefined. I'll see if I can refine it a bit more next time, and I'll leave it as such as a reminder. Surprisingly, I rushed the shoes, but thanks for the compliment.
>>7842026
The faces are off, but everything else seems solid enough, yeah. I do find it better for construction rather than as a anatomical reference, but I see what you mean. It's definitely a series I'll keep an eye on. And don't talk badly about your skills, it's very accurate in comparison to his drawings.
>>
>>7842020
This is really good. The only thing is that without the reference or knowledge of the character I wouldn't be able to tell if she's wearing gloves or just has rings on her arms.
But I don't know how you could do it without introducing new values. Maybe add wrinkles similar to the boots?
>>
>>7842030
It's a result of
>Draw a chunk of the full image
>Compare it visually and try to spot mistakes
>Correct them if you spotted them
>Overlay the images and see if you were right
>If wrong move the drawing to the side and go back to step 1
Every drawing takes me around an hour as a result but I don't mind since I'm specifically trying to train my accuracy and observation. Again I'm only 6 days into this so take this with a grain of salt but I've noticed obvious improvements in my ability to accurately copy angles from the first try as a result. Curved lines are still a pain but there's still progress on that front too
>>
>>7842037
Thank you, anon. I should definitely have added a bit more details on her lower arms and hands, as they seem flat. Some slight wrinkles and overlapping lines might have worked? I'll see how I can do it better for the next drawing. That's what studies are for, I figure.

>I should definitely have added a bit more details on her lower arms and hands, as they seem flat.
I meant more the texture. In the ref they are smooth so I get why you did it that way, but with only two values and no lighting there's no way to differentiate her skin from the white gloves. So I thought since the material is the same you could "make it up" with the folds.
But now that you mention it being flat, the legs don't have the little hatch marks you did on her arms. What are those, by the way? Where did you learn to to that? They look good but I don't understand.
I really like this limited style of drawing but I find it really difficult to fill in the details on bodies.
>>
>>7842049
The small marks serve multiple purposes. In my regular sketches, I usually use them as markers for light and texture, which will help me in the long run for when I start painting. It's about identifying shapes and depth. For this drawing I used them to define shape, but I must admit, I was lost when it came to defining smooth clothing. I usually let wrinkles, however much defined, show form. If I were to draw it again, I'd probably try to add some on the underside of the thighs and such, as it could hopefully be interpreted as part of shadows. I like the shapes, and I know the anatomical placements, but it's not a really clear drawing.

thank you.
i tried it but dropped it cuz it wasnt teaching as much in detail as i wanted.
after finishing the loomis drawing the head and hands book, im now trying to copy bridgmans conplete guide to drawing from life.
its hard to try and apply what i see in my own drawings or in other copies but i really like his style.
and for fun as a break i copy from comics sometimes too.

Don't worry, the grey doesn't matter when the drawing is this good.
>>7842100
One can only dream, I guess.
>>
>>7842117
I started with Hampton, which is my main inspiration if you've seen his work, and there's also a little Bridgman and some slight amount of Rielly. I tried Loomis in the beginning, but I figured it was a meme. I didn't work for me, but I've seen others make great use of it.
>>7842118
I mostly find it funny, don't worry. Anyone working as a teacher can tell you that you'll encounter a lot worse than meanies on the internet.
>>
i wish i knew how to render :(
>>
>>7842122
>hampton
maybe i should try and go through his book again. i got up to landmarks chapter but still felt like i didn't really understand the whole gesture portion of the book yet
>>
>>7842123
Add more light to face and left arm should also catch some. Btw can you draw Roswaal from Re Zero?
>>
>>7842125
>light to face
fair, the ref was wearing a cap so i assume this fucked up the lighting on mine
>left arm
ah ye i fucked up a little there, shadows are too dark and there should be some light on the hand
>Roswaal
ask me again in two weeks i've got like 3 drawings on the backlog right now. but he looks nice so i would like to draw him eventually.
>>
>>7842124
I recommend it. I'm still not finished with it, but I also remember that the beginning of the landmark chapters was like pulling my own teeth out. I made it through though I had to redraw a lot of times before I finally succeeded.
>>7842123
I like it. Besides the arm, maybe make the shadows warmer? The light cast off (area between light and shadow) hints at a warmer tone.

Dude, how old are you? Unless you're over 75, 1 to 2 hours a day of pure studies is enough to become really great at drawing in roughly 5 years. Don't beat yourself up about it, I've seen worse. Much worse. Just keep at it, don't spend more than 30 minutes on drawings, 10 minutes on smaller studies, and never become attached to any drawing you're making during your studies. You'll see improvement in no time.

I've been going for almost a year though and while there has been improvement, it feels lacking
I bought a couple of drawing books to see if they may hold any helpful insights
I'm also 32 which means I'm legally in old age and so learning is tougher
