6 years of drawing and im still dogshit
Literally stop scrolling. Set blockers or hard time limits on shit that is consuming your time and has no use, like constantly scrolling online o algx
You just didn't practice enough TO BE QUITE FRANK. 6 years is enough time to take ANYBODY to at least an intermediate if not high int/low adv level.

>>7847878>"lol just draw!">constructive advice
>>7847856For me at least, I usually spend 2 hours every day on studies, some times in one sitting, most times a little scattered throughout the day. Whatever time I have left over is spent on whatever I want to draw/paint. Whenever I begin, I love to draw a portrait, that's really a fun one. I haven't ventured much into painting yet, but I want to have a solid foundation in drawing first before venturing on to that. Whatever painting-specific knowledge I've gained has been through osmosis via Instagram and Pinterest, honestly. It can be boring, especially the studies, but the work pays off. Learning is most often a boring element, like going back to school, but using the gained experience is fantastic. That really becomes addicting after a while. You don't need to spend 2 hours a day on studies, but dedicating some amount to it will increase your skills drastically. I use refs to see where I'm at, then I open up a book and copy whatever thing I'm bad at, breaking down the elements that I find most difficult. Mostly these days, it's Bridgman, which was daunting to me 6 months ago, but is quite manageable these days to draw. Here's one of my most recent drawings that isn't a study.
>>7847917>I usually spend 2 hours every day on studiesoh so you're a talented rat, got itsorry to break it to you, but not everyone can improve just by drawing from reference like you do
>>7847930>what work should i do to get better?>gives one method>grrr, I can't, talent, talent, rat!Okay, anon. You go ahead with whatever works or doesn't work for you, then. You asked, I answered.
>>7847934your method is just basically "lol draw" i can't just copy "whatever thing I'm bad at" and improve magically like you. doing stuff like this just gives me zero information to work with and it all feels pointless
>>7847951You don't just absent mindedly try to copy things. You have to have done some studying, right? You apply what you've studied to the thing you're trying to draw. You probably know to sketch out the biggest shapes first, so focus on that for a few drawings and then who cares how the rest turns out, the real practice for now is lightly sketching in two or three major shapes. Everything else is for fun Pick a subject you want to try and we can try showing you how we'd break it down.
>>7845001iktf>>7845003I don’t think it’s purely time. I have drawn hundreds of hours, if not thousands. It’s possible to just have such dogshit practice methods that you never improve.I think my biggest mistake was basically never drawing from reference (like entire years would go by with almost no studies), and when I would draw from reference it was painstakingly slow, like multiple hours for a barely passable figure drawing.I’m grinding studies hard to be able to do good figure drawings in 5-10 minutes, and I’m hoping once I can confidently draw any reference quickly I can get into a faster imagination -> study refs -> repeat loop.
when I was /beg/ I was happily drawing hours every day. Now I can barely stomach drawing one thing a day. When I finish it, I rush to turn off the tablet and push to the back of my table like I'm allergic to it.

>>7847856When it comes to learning anything, you have to engage with tasks you find challenging but that still have enough skill to tackle.
>>7845001I've been at it for more than 20 and have an art degree and I'm still worse than dogshit. Don't feel bad.
>>7850514>>7851016These are great, anons. Here's mine with some studies.>>7851044I feel this. I loved to draw when I was a kid, but I stopped at when I was rouphly 15 to focus on school. I ironically pursued a teaching degree in languages and arts, and you'll be familiar with the lack of skills needed for that. I scored high, and I also taught for a few years, mostly written works. Think white-boy youtube video-essays, something like that. At 28, halfway to 29, I wanted to teach drawing, which I remembered being good at. Turns out, I was completely shit. Being delusional in your teenage years really does a number on you. Still, it's possible to learn.
>>7851113Thank you. I like how you got the little gap where he lips are slightly parted. I really liked that as a little detail in the reference and couldn't get it to look right
>>7847951Then kill yourself. No one cares you suck. Others actually draw and study
>>7851449Thank you, too. I really liked that part too. It's not one of my favorite drawings; I messed up her left (the rightmost) eye, but it's an easy fix.

I know there's a lot of memeing about ADHD and learning disorders around here but I sincerely wish it didn't stop me from pursuing my passions. Not just drawing, everything I do is an uphill battle. I'm in a country that doesn't believe in ADHD rn so I'll have to wait until I'm back home to get back on meds.
>>7852997I'm sorry to read that, anon. Truly. Most of my family members are neurodivergent, myself included. We all have our quirks, my father was a mathematical genius and had high sensitivity, I myself inhale information like a sponge and I love the arts. I could list my whole immediate family, but I digress. We all struggle with it to some extent, but my big brother especially has severe ADHD, and without the medication he has trouble exciting at all. Nevertheless, he has a brilliant mechanical and logical mind, and he used to be one of the best in his field in regards to electrical engineering and coding. I hope you're doing well, despite everything, and I know how you feel. Keep at it, anon. Just know, a random anon on the Internet hopes the best for you.
>>7852997I don't really believe in ADHD. I'm probably older than most people here, in that I grew up before social media and smart phones, and did not even have internet access until my teenage years (and that was dial-up). Things are different now, and it affects everyone, myself included. The children's shows on TV used to be calm and quiet; now they are loud and fast-moving. We used to buy PC games on disks, and they came with manuals filled not only with instructions but lore, maps and other goodies, and we enjoyed reading them. The graphics were less explicit and resolved, so playing was more of an exercise in using one's imagination. Almost everyone today is glued to their phone, and feels anxiety without it. We didn't even have basic flip phones as kids. There was no social media at all, with its algorithm manipulating you, no FOMO, no e-commerce. When I first got internet access (late 1990s) it wasn't commercialized at all. There were no ads anywhere. This is not "ADHD," it's the effects of rapid technological and commercial developments that are having dramatic effects on humans individually and societally. Getting kids hooked on prescription meds is not helping the problem, either.
>>7853300(cont'd)To my point: I used to be very productive and creative, made art, coded (finished) games. Now just getting started on anything is, as you say, an uphill battle. I know if you put me in a cozy little cabin someplace remote, without a phone, or SMS, or any of the obligations that necessitate being "plugged in," the problem would go away.
>>7853303>I don't really believe in ADHI agree, you're just a retard feeling sorry for yourself.

>>78450016 years >drawingor 6 years drawing? The quality of one's outcome is incredibly dependent on the quality of one's training routine.>>7847930>>sorry to break it to you, but not everyone can improve just by drawing from reference like you dothe easiest path to become better it's absolutely to (also) draw from reference because you need that mental data bank, but you really need to focus on your training. Which means to try and understand what you're seeing and how to portray it.Just spamming lines on paper to accumulate volume, even with reference, may lead to improvements or nothing at all. It needs to be a focused and deliberate effort to reach a specific goal.Though maybe you've been doing all the right things or you're just too hard on yourself, I don't know, but if in 6 years you didn't make any significant improvements you must be doing something wrong.
>>7845001>>7847917>>7857242Not OP, but in your opinion, what someone is actually supposed to study?I lack pretty much of all fundamentals... Things like perspective, proportions, and observation, can be known on paper, but to practice are impossible...
>>7856799>delicate work with a stompnot sure if you can blend the animator pencils but I might try, thank you.
>>7852412clean>>7856798vulgar>>7856777good effort, see if you can finish it>>7857161face looks good, but it appears you gave up too soon.
>>7857450I think the first important step is to set up a standard to reach, to have something to look forward to. In my experience, even though it might frustrating, actively struggling to constantly achieve a specific higher standard is the main motivator and guiding star for improvement, it should guide your every practice if you want to improve. Never settle for a subpar results as much as you can basically. And most of all, deliberate practice. You're trying to solve a puzzle here, to teach your brain a new language which you can only get to understand through hours of deliberate and focused practice. The way I got decent at drawing was fairly organic for me, I had family member which already was into drawing and I basically wanted to impress them, then the teachers when I briefly went to art school, and finally the people in my head when I larp as a future skilled artist. I say this because the mentality you have is the most important factor, as there is not particular secret in regards as to what to learn, outside of the standard stuff.I'd study everything a little bit, which is almost inevitable anyway, when you study how to draw a human in perspective you're studying anatomy, perspective and gesture all the same time, but even composition really, since composition is always a factor to achieve a pleasant image.Try to study in a focused manner, focus on something and truly try and understated the shapes or concept of it, do it for hours, over and over again. And also don't skip on gesture, it's one of the most important skills to me for a truly good draftsman. It should all be at least mildly pleasant of course, even in the challenging parts of it, it shouldn't be torture but more alike solving a puzzle.TIL: just take a master of a higher level and copy until you've cracked the code somewhat.

I am lazy>>7857242 I like your lines and the small paintings.>>7851113 Nice constructions. You do any archi work?>>7851016 Crude but expressive. Mogging me when I was at your stage.>>7857161 You got some nice lines in there around the nose. But I don’t like your hatching. Try to stay away from hatching in all kind of direction (along the hair direction for example), and either go darker, or lighter. And try to hatch a given area faster, you are petting to much and get it glossy. You are doing good with erasing for making light, so don’t be afraid to go darker, then erase away a little. Darker, then erase partially, darken, then erase partially Try it, it will surprise you.

>>7845001that's because you only drew for a few hours per month and you didn't even practice in earnest you half-hardheartedly did contours on zombie mode and told yourself they were "gesture drawings" and when anatomy filtered you you would take long year long breaks
>>7866322Ok, you did my psychological profile, now do OP
>>7866412uhh that's because >>7845001 you drew the same girl in a 3/4ths position over and over again with a really big brush so you didn't have to worry about detailing, line weight or control and never bothered to look into color theory and she was always in a white void and relatively expressionless and hands were too hard so you always hid them and feet were too hard so you drew her with weird slipper things
