This is why you should adopt the mindeset of appreciating all kinds of arts from all eras instead of only consuming nostalgia from your childhood and fotm anime. Learning to draw opened my eyes to appreciate a lot of comic book artist and renaissance art. There is a lot to learn from them
>>
>>7846875
If you're just some carbon copy of some other guy, youre no better than an ai sloppa. I can just go look at the original guy's art instead
>>
>>7846875
Because unlike the Japanese we have and care about copyright laws

Same autistic dogshit threads over and over and over. Site is fucking dead.

Autist retard probably found that coloring is easier than drawing and now blames it on anime.

You are the perfect example of an over'socialized individual: you would jump off a building if it became the trend. I pity you, you’re lost in society’s maze, forgetting the soul’s honest and unique simplicity. After all, true creativity is the expression of that soul, free from external filters.

Simple idea: why should an individual’s most cognitively ergonomic expression [its sincerity] have to conform to someone else’s patterns?
>>
>>7846875
everything except for drawing
see>>7846904

Nevermind the fact that style is just fucking proportions slapped to constructions.

no, we have to be fucking snowflakes because drawing is too fucking hard.
>>

Art is a tool to invoke certain emotions in the target viewer, not your personal toy to make you feel special. You're type of tard that romanticizes drawing Steven Universe OCs that nobody cares about.
>>
>>7846908
Art can mean many things and have different roles. Art is a process, art is a product, art is a cultural phenomenon. It can be a tool, or it can be a personal toy.

Also the anon to whom you replied said "creativity", not "art", so it should be already clear they're talking in a different context than you.

Have a unique character is to have a more easily identifiable character, thus making the franchise that character is a part of more easily identifiable.
I do think that some western creators take the mindset too far and try to make ugly homunculus looking things their main characters (steven from steven universe, for example, is shit), though I suspect that's less bad character design and more shitty identity politics coming into play, and they're trying to put "average" looking people into their shows (by making them unattractive).

On the flipside, I do feel like Asian creators are far too blase' with how similar their character designs look compared to others. Young Male twink MC's with shaggy black hair are a dime a dozen, but having so many look as similar as in picrel is crazy to me. I'm sure this must create some brand confusion and such, but if I cool character design comes up, why not do something similar? Originality can be a blessing and a curse.
It's because of Asia's willingness to copy each other we got the beloved genre of isekai... it's also because of their willingness to copy each other that isekai has been so overdone that people now roll their eyes at it.
I think it's similar with Asia's visual designs, someone comes up with cool shit, others continue to deliver that same cool shit, but we continue getting force fed that shit long after it warmed to room temperature and has been watered down and sloppy.

So there are positives and negatives to both mindsets (Eastern V. Western) - personally I prefer to chase originality and see others have their swing at it, and to also see the misses to, as they can often be just as interesting (even if they're not good).
But I can't fault someone for copying the greats and giving people more of what they love...
...What the fuck was the topic again?
>>
>>7846880
what are some comic book and renaissance artists you like
>>
>>7846866
Easier to draw 100 times a day for animation or manga
Who cares how many “unique” faces you can draw if none of them are appeal or consistent among the same character
>>
>mfw OP doesn't know Baki
Literally the only reason to watch Baki is the face style, the powerscale and powerups are beyond retarded
>>
>>7846866
well, cartoons simplify the faces. you already know that. a strong style will then overpower any minutes differences making it seem like every face is the same. it's why in anime they often resort to interesting hair and eye colors and unique hair styles
apart from those, the only way to make unique faces with a simplified style is to try to depict extreme faces like the one you posted
by extreme I mean sick. diseased. that person has genetic issues and/or suffered through some sort of illness during their development. I don't want to see that in my anime. I want to see cute girls
>>

Don't have access to my ref folder atm so I can't find the artist I am thinking of but if you're looking for artist to learn from hans bacher is really great at composition and color. I love the way tatsuyuki tanaka draws characters and mechanical creatures. Tim sale does beautiful inking, check out batman long halloween. Long list of artist I like I keep going but ill stop.

You can find trillions of pictures of tumblrites drawing disfigured man-looking woman with red noses and face hair all over the internet, you are not "special" for not conforming to the generic anime style with your art. Its just that people who aren't pathological contrarians don't like the for obvious reasons, just like they don't like staring at a pile of shit on a random street.

>>
>>7846875
what's with these retarded weebs that only watch moe shit?
>>
Because drawing faces with realistically subtle diversity is very hard, especially when you're doing mass drawings like animation or manga. That's why when alternate faces are used, they're typically very extreme like gonk faces. Subtle variation is too hard to replicate in a timely manner so diversity is communicated through discrete changes like hair and eyes.

Why did man conquer the earth? It is because he has curiosity and likes to experience new things, to expand his mind and learn. It is in his blood and what makes him human. You are no man, you are a bug.

At the end of the day, create a unique design if you can.
If said design is ugly then I advise you scrap it: I'd rather creators resort to more stereotypical but visually pleasing choices such as the ones seen in your pic.
Beauty trumps everything in character design, people 100% judge a book by its cover, if your characters look ugly they won't even give your work a chance. The only time you're screwed even when going with such a safer mentality is in the event of design oversaturation, i.e. if that look is replicated eccessively in works, but even then, I'd still prefer that over uggos

Two reasons. The first is that it gives them the excuse of saying that a badly-constructed face/body/whatnot is totally intentional and not at all evidence of their inability or refusal to draw properly. The second - and this is especially popular in queer and queer-adjacent communities like Twitter and Tumblr - is that uniqueness (read: ugliness) is their way of standing up to the straight, white patriarchy's beauty standards.

East and West are split philosophically and spiritually on individuality. Europeans are much more individualist, probably due to the unique history that occurred in Europe, and the East is much more collective-minded, again probably due to their history. In a phrase: it's "Odin" opposite "Buddha." Asians typically won't care about their individuality, Europeans do, and I guess we're just left wondering why exactly.

What's interesting is that, from antiquity through the Renaissance and even into the 19th century, Western artists predominantly painted and sculpted an idealized type. The facial proportions and features of Greek statues appear (with subtle variation) over and over again throughout Western art. Even an artist with a distinctive style, like Michelangelo, has a recognizable type (still based on the Greek) that appears in most of his works. I've attached one of Leonardo's studies of "grotesque" heads as a counter-example, the exception that proves the rule. It is only a drawing, however; the individual, with its deviations from the ideal, was not viewed as suitable for representation in painting and sculpture except (to a limited degree) in portraiture.
>>
>>7862230
Probably a big part of that was the institution of art as a discipline, they didn't do it for fun. Maybe Europeans are just enjoying the artistic freedom they never had.

You can see sort of the same thing with superhero comics, the "type." The heroes are all 9-10 heads tall, muscular, square-jawed with low brows and narrow eyes (see Bruce Wayne, Superman, etc.). Even if there is variation between artists, most artists still develop a type of their own (or borrow it from what came before). The exception would be someone like Mort Drucker, who seemed never to draw the same face twice, and could not only capture likenesses brilliantly in his caricatures, but could invent distinct characters from imagination from a seemingly endless store of material (the latter skill almost certainly developed as a result of the former). Picrel is a Burger King ad featuring all invented Drucker people.

The big takeaway I've learned from this thread is people generally don't look at older works in anime or have never seen anything that's not the immediately current thing on crunchyroll or whatever, because this wasn't really a problem before the 90s and the bubble bursting. the drastic shift in budgets forced staff to find ways to build shorthand contexts they could use on multiple series right away, leading to alot less viability for unique styles and more of a lean towards those shorthands. This became especially true when cels were finally phased out.
That's not to say there aren't a fewthings here and there that don't experiment. the mecha genre especially loved trying new ways to draw characters, with Xabungle and Escaflowne being standouts for having the most interesting takes.

in short: stop looking at the same shit all the time and thinking that only the averages matter.

Anime from the '80s and '90s is freaking awesome. The introduction of CGI was a turning point for the worse. Even the "simple" styles of the early '80s are wonderful and very appealing.
