I gave up on drawing around five years ago. I used to check this thread daily and even participated in the website where you had to keep your streak alive. Think I got into the triple digits but maybe it was smaller than that. Possibly high twos. I was mostly a lurker since I was an awful noob, and that never changed despite my best efforts.I really liked this thread's theme of persistence and daily effort, but drawing wasn't for me. I picked it up late and I think I never had enough passion for it. I wanted to be a creative and art was the most appealing aesthetically, which isn't a good foundation. You should create because you enjoy it intrinsically, at least at some level. Only once that requirement is met should you add discipline.The good news is that I didn't stop pursuing art in the broader sense. I picked up writing as my next hobby, and believe it or not, I write fiction as a very comfortable full time living now. In retrospect it was obviously a better fit. I didn't write growing up but I read a ton. Averaged at least a book a week from the time I was ten. Sometimes I skipped lunch to go to the school library.There's not really a point to this post. I know blogposters are annoying to a lot of anons (they are on /lit/, at least). I clicked into /ic/ for the first time in a long while, saw this thread, and felt compelled to type this up.Keep practicing every day. There's nothing more important than consistent effort. That mindset did wonders for me. This prior /dad/ made it, just not in the creative field he intentionally planned. I'm positive others can find similar success if they keep at it.

Here is a fun idea for /dad/ to improve on, why not do art daily, but in different medium? I done it before 10 years ago, it is very fun, but you have to accept that it may suck, because jumping from pencil to pen was already a huge leap, imagine pen to charcoal, then charcoal to crayon, etc. it's gonna be fun, trust, and may the most creative /dad/ wins first page, because clearly, its been how many years now, some people are not improving, their neuroplasticity is stuck. Call it creative challenge or something different challenge, good luck have fun! All the best! We are all going to make it, believe!

I don't know his exact method but I tried to use a colour burn layer with midtone brush work and lower the opactiy to get the wet stain look. then I put another flat layer on top with white highlights and that seemed to get me kind of close. >>7860148you're pretty close. Even if you keep the anatomy subtle you can use this as a guide. The shoulder muscle sits on top of the cake,the bicep next and the tricep will be beneath at that angle. If a part of the anatomy is going foreshorten the other it'll go in that order. Also it's more pronounced on the male anatomy but the line of the shoulders curves has a subtle angular quality to it Don't be afraid to use a thinner brush when sketching. Or maybe use a large square brush and carve out the shapes with the eraser tool

Soft forms like that have a way stronger discontinuity on the side that's facing more away from the viewer, so that gives more information to viewer on what the underlying forms are like. (I prefer more subtle nipples though, so there's an aspect of personal preference)
