You don't have to paint pretty bowls of fruit. I pick things that have interesting shapes, textures, colours. Pic related features two white objects, but their texture and exact hue is slightly different. That's what was interesting about it.

This isn't a still life in the traditional sense, but it's also not a plein air in the traditional sense. I suspect the motivation for the artist to paint this was that it's a subtle but interesting mix of shapes and colours

Another Tehmeh, a portrait and a still life in one. I have a tough time to doing elaborate still lives during the day, the light changes too quickly that from the time you start painting to the time you finish, the lighting has changed completely

any specific courses or books you used to get to this level? I'm still learning the basics, pic related, basic exercise to learn to control it better, still figuring out what brushes to use.
>>
>>7854076
The closest thing I can think of to that would be the Charles Bargue Drawing Course, which you can find for free online.
But really it's a matter of practice, you get better with each still life you do.
I did this one today, it's a bit sloppy, but it's all good fun.

I need to get back into art. I bought some oil paints last year and did a couple paintings on cheap canvas pads.
I've just picked up a pencil for the first time in ages and what little skill at drawing I had has devolved. I'm trying to start the whole mess up again. I really want to get back to where I was and progress.
I'm going to try to draw more when I don't get super long shit at work.
>>
Maybe a dumb question but how do you see your paper if you're supposed to remove every light except the direct light you set up for your still life?

It is a misunderstanding to think that "still life" = "image drawn with a single isolated light source"

There is of course value in doing that, one light source is easier to understand than many. But it is only one kind of exercise, and does not encompass the entirety of still life painting. There are many others things you can learn from still lives.

But if you do want to isolate your light source, try something like pic related. Put the lightsource in a box, so outside lights can't intrude. Ideally you want to coat it in something that doesn't bounce the light around the box much, a black felt or cloth would work well.
But do know that it is impossible to get a truly direct light source, there will always be bounced light, otherwise all shadows would be 100% black. And light will bounce even around the object itself so even if you painted it in the emptiness of space, it would never be truly direct light only.

How many of these a day did you do to get to this level? I wanna add them to my practice regime, but idk if I have the time for it

I think these digital still lifes are a nearly useless waste of time. Normally you learn how to paint and see light and COLOR-MIXING / aka / color theory. Which is its own entire universe of knowledge. Digitally you're just picking the point on the wheel that matches the color and copying the image. I would imagine that none of this digital practice would carry over into real painting/drawing.

These are beautiful anon. I hate doing still lives alone I absolutely need at least one person or a group of people all doing it too or just chatting.
>>
>>7860351
Colour mixing is just a mechanical task. Complaining about that is like saying painting with tubes isn't real painting because you didn't mix the powder and binder and grind it into a paste yourself.
>>
>>7860351
Retard
>>
>>7860351
lol. no. that's the most rudimentary form of a study that beginners fall into. When you're doing a life study you go into with an intention. Copying without thinking might as well be reading a textbook and never drawing. If you understand how light interacts with materials and forms you can translate your color theory between mediums very easily once you understand how to use the medium, this includes color mixing.
