Can I learn how to draw from tracing art?

I used to think so until I tried it. That makes sense, right? When you learn to write, did they tell you to use a thin paper and lightbox? Of course not. You just copy the example alphabet a lot of times.

Workbooks also do that. Kawaisensei, Alphonse Dunn, etc.

I think it has to do with the visual feedback. When you trace like that, the drawing is not very clear, it blends with the underlying traced image. Since learning how to draw is mostly improving hand-eye coordination, that definitely is a problem. You didn’t get accurate info into your brain.

Same thing when learning a new language. The norm is repeat what the teacher say. Not mumble together at the same time. Not to mention phenomenon like: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delayed_auditory_feedback#Effects_in_people_who_do_not_stutter
That’s why I think shadowing in language learning is bullshit.

I've done it. its rather embarrassu. I really don't recommend it. because you're just copying a line. no creativity involved.

Learn to draw completely, no. However, it can help you improve line accuracy, and if you are actually thinking while doing it, you can learn common shapes other artists use for their art.

Now, I do believe that full on lightbox tracing isn't as affective as just observing the image and trying to copy it that way. That way, you can get better at your observational skills.

I wouldn't recommend it, anon, but you can gain SOME skill from it, so it wouldn't be an entirely lost cause. Just probably not the amount of skill you're looking for.

tracing is a different skill than drawing from imagination and both are in turn different from drawing from reference. I think you should do all three in succession to improve. I feel I improved a decent bit with relatively minimal practice that follows the idea of doing all three

no. in order to learn "how to draw" you are teaching your brain how to see and to interpret what you see with your hands. tracing is tracing. you are training your brain to follow lines. that is not drawing.

no
