Contact the publisher and show them your work. You realize they have open contact details and actively encourage newcomers to contact them right? At least, most publishers do.

Though yes, it is reasonable to say that they'll overlook just about anything so long as they believe you can make a work that will sell, this probably isn't the same kind of skill you're thinking of.3. Self-publishing is even more of a rat-race than aiming for publication and straight up not an option for people who don't have savings to burn trying to make it work. Never mind that you'll almost certainly reach a much larger audience with a publisher than going it alone. Aiming for a professional publication makes a lot of sense.
