Can someone actually explain why the light in the lightest sphere stays mostly light and only starts getting dark nearing the shadow but the dark spheres goes from light to shadow a lot more linearly

They're lit differenttly.
In both your example the spheres that have a sharper change in light, are lit directly.
The more matte looking spheres are being lit by the environment, also called ambient lighting, in addition to bounce lighting, with the main light source barely reaching them for the highlight.

I'll see if I can hop on my PC and show with arrows how the light rays are working.
