My suggestion would be to work on pushing your colors and values more.For value, one thing that I find helps is to convert the image to black and white and see how it reads. If it reads ok, your values are fine, if not- push them a bit more. As for color- the best advice I can get is be bold. The blue on your bird shouldn't just be one version of 'blue' that is lighter or darker- it should ideally be a slightly different type of blue for each.Pic related- I took a piece of mine and yours and desaturated them. Notice the differences in value ranges? Also, take a look at the fox's pants. Notice how they're tan, but not just "Light tan, medium tan, and dark tan"? Each color is a completely different color.Keep it up! (Also I would totally let that bird sit on my face lol)

I tend to try and paint opaquely- meaning I'm not always building up layers of color and value- I'm literally trying to pick the color and value that I want right from the color picker. If it's wrong or looks weird I pick another color. Once I get things in a "good enough place, I'll then go back and adjust colors by lightly layering other colors over it with a brush, or by using color modifier layer over the entire painting to bring all the colors into concert with one another.An important thing about modifier layers though- I've found that when I use thrm, I have to go back and paint opaquely over things again because it tends to destroy values/saturation. If I had to offer any advice on how to get better at values, it's to understand how chroma (aka saturation) works. I think we tend to perceive highly saturated colors as much lighter or darker than they actually are. For whatever reason, saturation is just fucking hard to deal with, and once I started getting better at that, my values got better as a result.Hope that helps!
I decided to try something WAY to difficult for my current level to figure out what I need to study.I'm going to stop here and do some studies for a while and then come back to have another go at it.I need to sketch and plan out the piece more. Only had a vague idea of what I wanted. Didn't even design the central character much. He's not supposed to be naked. I just didn't think. Values are all over the place, and so are colours. I will do a bunch of those 2-value studies and go from there.He is stiff and his action is not clear. How do people shade/color a drawing? I can create a (somewhat) workable sketch but I have no idea how to move forward from there.
>>7930657I'm not to well versed in digital drawing, but usually some multiply, overlay, or light layer with very light opacity brushes and colors that aren't too saturated (as multiply literally multiplies the values, or others make it to where it raises the floor or lowers the ceiling on the RGB values).I'd say the sketch is good, but the thumb for the hand next to the head is on the wrong side. You could basically just remove it and it would look fine (as I don't believe you would see the thumb anyway with how it is angled).Also just make sure to actually sketch the shadows casting to make sure they are consistent between each other.

>>7930657i usually start by blocking in broad colors to get a general sense/feel of the picture's palette, i think that tends to help a lot.sometimes you have to avoid putting too much detail or sharpness on the background if you want the foreground to grab the viewer's attention, this can be accomplished with lineweights but if you're painting you can try the aforementioned blocking in technique and then not touching it up too much until you know how sharp your foreground is. Negative space and framing can also do a lot of heavy lifting. In your case you could try pulling your vanishing point down a bit and throw a dark vignette around the elements in the bottom cornersa pitfall I've noticed with lots of artists struggling with backgrounds (including myself) is that they are treating the background as an afterthought; many will start out with a simple pinup and then add a background later, which can lead to them feeling disconnected. I don't think it's correct to think that every picture needs or is improved by a background. Furries seem to trend towards this because of the ubiquity of standard commission sheet formats, which very reductively splits your work into character and background. I understand that it's for lack of a better way of doing things, but I think this is one of the reasons a lot of people think tacking a background onto drawings after the fact just makes them inherently better.Anyways, tangent aside, i think besides studying color theory and looking at references the best thing for coloring is to get messy and keep playing with hues and shades until things look right. Don't be afraid to think to yourself "man this section just doesn't look like it's the right color now that it's contrasted against this other section." and just redo it.
