i want to be one of those people who are really good at character designing to the point others are inspired immediately. i doodle little characters for fun, like this one. but what in character designs do i focus on? i am blind to my weaknesses here
>>7881249I'd say she's cute and the artstyle has a charm to it that I quite enjoy, but otherwise it's a bit plain. I'm not quite sure how to help you though, unfortunately... Maybe make the hair a little more shapely, use it to give you a more recognizable sillhouette.Would a thread dedicated solely to character design critique sound worthwhile? I know there's the OC redraw thread but it's basically just an art trade general and I personally would like somewhere to get critique without feeling like I'm soliciting art of my OCs...
>>7881249>i am blind to my weaknesses hereSo from your perspective both the design and execution are perfect here ?
>>7881249make the pants a bit more baggy and see if it helpsimo would pair well with the chunky shoes
>>7881259no i just dont know what to improve on. i know it could be better somehow, but no idea what. its missing something...>>7881257thank you! ill take the silhouette idea into consideration, and a character design thread would be nice..,
>>7881262dunno why i didnt do so in the first place, really. i love designs with baggy pants, so ill do that!
>>7881263What are your design inspirations?
>>7881266i dont know. should i have some? i just want to be good at this stuff
>>7881273I mean, it's fine to not have some, but it can give an idea for what you want out of your designs
It's a bit of a long term goal, but I think developing a strong personal taste definitely helps character design. Expose yourself to many kinds of art, ask yourself what you like and what feels pleasing to you. Then, try to create designs that feel Right. What I'm trying to say is, if you know what you like, you'll have an easier time transferring your personality into your creations. And personality is a big part of art appeal in general. Also, general art skills help, but you probably already know that.
>>7881325thanks for the advice! i guess ill have a potter around on pinterest
>>7881249>i doodle little characters for fun, like this one. but what in character designs do i focus on?Personality and readability.Personality is pretty simple; the character has X personality, so they where Y clothes or have Z hairstyle. The character you posted has a pretty casual vibe and seems chill, for example. A dude in a suit with meticulous hair and a tie and cufflinks would have a completely different vibe.Readability has a few layers; as an example, you've probably watched a show where a new character showed up and you could tell they weren't a random mob character, just by their design. Good character design stands out from a crowd and from the other characters. You can get into shit like shape design and silhouettes to support this; big guys are typically an inverted triangle because it makes them look large and powerful.
>>7881578thank you this is really useful advice!!
