Anyone have advice on how to quit shit like video games? I always always always end up spending my afternoons from work playing games and then i always always always go to sleep regretting what i did and how i didnt draw, which ends up making me feel even worse about myself and my art, which makes me want to draw less because i know whatever i do is going to turn out like shit

There's two things you can do. I try to do both.

>Premack Principle (Grandma's Rule)
Do the thing you don't want to do first before doing the thing you want to do as a reward for doing the previous thing.

So instead of allowing yourself to play video games first, tell yourself that you will allow yourself to play video games only AFTER you have done some (quantifiable) amount of drawing. Because you now see an end to something that's hard--drawing as a beginner is extremely difficult especially as an adult--it becomes a little easier to do.

This one is very effective because your brain hates being bored. If all you want to do is play video games but you don't allow yourself to until you draw, your brain will now see drawing as a means to alleviate the boredom. Sometimes you'll stare at the wall for half-an-hour but usually you'll just end up drawing just to get it out of the to play video games.

>Temptation Bundling
This is bundling activities that you enjoy with things you don't.
For instance, listening to music while washing the dishes or cooking.

For drawing, you can disallow yourself to listen to music and only do so while drawing. Or listen to a podcast you like in the background or whatever. The point is to not allow yourself to do those things you enjoy in the background while doing nothing but instead force yourself to only allow yourself to do them while drawing.

I don't find this as effective personally but you may have better results than I did.

Don't worry about it, just play more VRchat.

OP pic fucking fooled me

I thought it was a robot doing the drawing then look back at the viewer

I was about to drop in an AI thread and post

might as well do it

Set yourself an alarm and a rigid schedule, and follow it, no buts or excuses. Finish lunch at 1:30? 2PM is your start drawing time, no matter what, so don't get into any long commitments like a video game match, then draw for however many hours you set yourself. After that, you are free to vidya all you want.
And if you feel that "pain" at the mere thought of sitting to draw, face your chair against a blank wall as close as you can, sit on it, and stare at the wall. You MUST do at least 5 minutes even if you feel like you get the point. When you can't stand the boredom anymore, start drawing immediately. It'll make drawing feel like tiktok-tier dopamine and make you want more.

is it ok to listen to music or video essays while you draw
>>
>>7899203
It's ok especially if it helps you with motivation, just be aware your brain will not function as effectively while you're distracted. Complete silence is best for productivity, clarity of thought and learning retention.
I usually only allow myself to listen to music during breaks. One song = one break. Taking breaks is a good idea btw, you're much less likely to burn out. I listen to podcasts sometimes, but usually only when I'm doodling, which is not exactly high intensity problem solving.

And oh, yeah, back at work I used to listen to music in my headphones just to drown out the voices of the co-workers. I fucking hate open plan offices. It's funny that hearing some radio host drone on about local politics or something makes it easier for me to doodle, but the moment I'm doing proper work I want to kill anyone who makes as much as a whimper.

Permitting to be bored once in a while is actually healthy for you.

The irony here is you’re replying in a thread where the OP is making money with his art and this is a time wasting thread (assuming he is the actual artist). You think you’re in good company with your sob story while he’s selling digital goods and commissions. Almost a humble brag thread. It just makes you look pathetic.

This is why anons stopped coming here and /ic/ is a fucking endless bucket of crabs where any real engagement with artists are on obscure and "word of mouth" invite-only Discords.

Get Cold Turkey micro manager. Literally locks you out of your computer and makes it so the only application you can use is drawing apps.
>>
>>7899061
keep a pencil and sketchbook wherevever you spend most of your time in the house so its easily accessible
whenever you get an idea then you can draw it

Same, I used to work professionally as an illustrator and after a family member died while I was drawing them a gift, I just stopped drawing altogether. For the last 2 years I've been wasting my time watching history video essays and playing grand strategy games
I've tried and tried and tried to get back into it but I'm just not able, I've tried the Premack Principle, I've tried listening to music or doing things I like while drawing like >>7899084 mentioned, but I end up paying more attention to the music than actually drawing. I even stitched a big ass drawing pad to only focus on drawing, and it's sitting on top of my drafting table for 2 weeks now, untouched.
I've only finished like 2 projects since then, one was a single painting that took me a month to finish(it would've taken at most a week 2 years ago) and the other one were some 20 illustrations for a friend's project which I only finished specifically because I didn't want to disappoint them more, and that shit took SIX MONTHS
I'm so fucking tired of my shit, I used to just sit and DRAW for hours, I used to get in the zone, couldn't pay attention to anything BUT what I was doing, and now I can't finish a fucking thing. Fucking bullshit

you can minimize it and use the minimal time as incentive after doing studies and pieces. like two hours drawing time, one for vidya. i played deus ex for the first time this past month and playing only a little each day makes it stay longer with you as well. sometimes you can also substitute your vidya time for a movie, despite those being a little longer, but why not. live a little. theres also good study material and ideas from other media. dont abandon the things you love, learn to live with them in a healthy way. godspeed, anon.

all of these techniques and tricks that anons are sharing don't do shit they are completely unproven gimmicks that just make you feel productive, like are you progressing or something but in a week or 2 you will be back at it again muh discipline doesn't work either.

You have a habit problem and all habit problems are resolved by being constantly conscious and aware of your habits. Because that's what habits are: unconscious actions and you combat them by being conscious of them.
You have to consciously at all times try to be aware of your habits and try to consciously act on them it at all times. Takes years to unlearn a bad habit that took years to learn nobody quits smoking in a day.
Its a hard uphill battle because of the nature of how habits work: its something that is basically invisible to your psychology and it gets you at your weakest. Its also a battle that the never really ends for every defeated bad habit you will find new ones that's just how our society works right now everything is designed to be addictive insidious softcore crack.
but that's just one part, once you've quit you realize 2 things that you have a lot of time now and that you don't really wanna draw, that's the other part: building a new habit and that is also quite hard and you do it the same way by consciously doing it. it helps a lot to do it according to a schedule because it simplifies the problem for you "at XX:XX i do this" is much simpler than "i must draw today" also dont be a perfectionist you will just burn out and replace that way. Its ok to miss a day or two and if you miss by a lot just restart.
