Why You Should Copy Anime:

**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

Made another Xiao, just got the flat base colours on this one but I think I want to try rendering her this time, will look up more tutorials later. I tried messing with proportions more this time, made her hands and feet bigger, for the sort of character she is in the game I think it looks a lot better. Also gave her a different expression but it makes her look way way older for some reason kek.

Rin is a piece of shit worse than that babylonian tier worm eaten incestuous whore of a purple haired skank. Nice drawing.

As for me, I tried my hand at some imagination drawing without any refs to take a break from the ball breaking grinding. Who knew that I have no idea how to position hair or how those Asian garbs actually look like without a reference.
She turned out cute at least.

Thanks again anon, I tried something weirder with her hands in this one since she's kind of got freaky monster hands in the game but I'm still pretty newbish when it comes to drawing them so trying to make something that breaks the rules doesn't translate as well. I should probably watch or read some tutorials but to be honest when I do that I end up getting bored and just go back to drawing balls to the wall on my own again...

No that doesn't really count. Listen friend I think autistically trying to use this many geometric shapes to describe something this basic is genuinely fucking you over. Spending almost an hour on these doodle ass drawings is insane to me and I'm not sure if it actually teaches you anything useful. My foray into the Krenz method was extremely short because I found it woefully fucking inefficient for any study period. My advice for you is to ditch all of it except maybe the most basic outline and then just use your eye and your eye alone for everything. Try bargue plates or keep drawing anime if you're into that but seriously try ditching this bullshit with basic shapes for every little thing. It just slows you down. Here's an example of my work to prove I'm not just a shitter talking out of his ass. I copied this piece entirely by eye (with corrections after overlaying the drawings after I was done with a chunk of it) around a month or two ago and it took me 2 hours 36 minutes according to the CSP timer (and I suspect at least one hour of that was me desperately trying to copy those eyes because I suck dick at them but I can't recall the details anymore).

And here's some basic bargues I did a few days back. This took me 1 hour and 30 minutes according to the timer. Recognizing basic shapes is cool and all and of course important but not to the point where you spend most of the drawing time on irrelevant shit that won't make it to the final drawing. You gotta train your actual eye instead of playing this silly game imo

Don't mindlessly copy what you see, look, examine and analyze what you're doing in relation to the author's words. This is most important to do during the "blocking" in phase, when you're fleshing out the manikin. Exaggerate the dynamism of the reference if you're unsure how to proceed.

>>7909940
i don't know what key to drawings teach but, i seems like you are focusing on small parts one at the time when you are copying or constructing/blocking, you are missing the base pose or line of action, if you start from big to small it gets really easy to block out the small details later on, for me this is way more important than the final drawing, anyway my advice would be just practice gesturing or sketching the overall shape from refs more than doing final/polished pieces.

But using curves for initial copying of big shapes means those shapes will be more off than using polygons as curves are ambiguous unlike straight lines in polygons

The chapters I read in Keys to Drawing taught me to draw what I see, not what I THINK I'm seeing.
I'm still piss poor at gesture drawing, anatomy and using building blocks (or whatever that method is called) at drawing characters.

I used this as a guide(There are 7 pages, this is just one of them) to help me me build the body, and then I erased it, and attempted to draw the right proportions over it.

I'll try again using your method, thanks!

I've not seen this course, but looking at those exercises, I can tell you you're not learning to draw any of those specific things. In fact, you're not really learning to draw yet. You're training the ability to see relationships, and then to translate them accurately to canvas. You are training muscles, which is always somewhat tedious.
That said, this is pretty much classical sight-sizing, except you're doing cartoons instead of still life.

and know you didnt asked for this but here it goes

I asuming you are pretty /beg/, there's a lot of debate on where you should start as beg, gesture, anatomy, drawing forms etc... however...
i would recomend first learn to see the forms in a 3D space aka feel the forms then anatomy and then you can relay on construction to drawn on top of it, if you relay on construction without anatomy your landmarks are kinda useless and withour seeing the forms your drawings are gonna look flat/wrong aka symbol drawing.

heres a example, you are using a straight cilinder for the legs, however the leg does not follow a straight line, if you where to follow that shape or direction the leg would look off/wrong bc is not anatomically right, and the stylization carries that on, you need to know anatomy but not that much imo.

There's an anime(not manga) called Chainsaw Man, and it uses full, monochromatic colors with rough transitions between figures. Can anyone tell me what this style of working with color and shadows is called? Google says it's either cel-shading or high-contrast art, but I seem to remember a specific word for this style of painting colors, making it visually slightly simplified in frame...Can anyone offer some advice?
>>
>>7911901
I watched the newest trailer I could find to see what the animation looks like. It's basic cel shading, high contrast art is something completely different, think hellboy comics cover art for that.
What you probably found different was the heavy use of rotoscoping (it becomes obvious during action scenes and it's also employed in normal scenes too for some strange reason despite them also doing normal animation) and 3d backgrounds and elements to save on costs. There's also this digital filter applied on the colors that's been popularized for the past decade or so in the anime medium, I don't know what's it called though. Rotoscoping seems to be mainly used nowadays to increase the frame rate of the inbetweeners, just like in older Disney movies like Alice in Wonderland for example. There's an inherent problem with this though that becomes noticeable during action scenes, the animation will look too uncanny and geriatric, for a lack of a better word, where the action itself would seem slow, strange and would also conflict with other elements. On the bright side, Chainsaw does a better job with rotoscoping, there's a really infamous anime adaptation that carved the name of rotoscoping to the masse called Aku no Hana, the worst possible case of the use of rotoscoping one can ever witness.
You'll also have to be a bit more specific in what you mean by monochromatic values and maybe give some examples, I did not notice any scenes that use this from the snippets.

This was "Procreate Pencil" in Procreate, which I found to be really good for this.
I think "Design pencil" in CSP can be somewhat close, especially if you duplicate it and disable brush opacity/density (or make the curve more tilted towards 100%).
If you want more texture, you can try this one: https://assets.clip-studio.com/en-us/detail?id=1712564 (this is "test 2" lines).
But yeah, looking at it, Procreate pencil looks kinda better stil.

Sup, First time posting here. I might need some suggestions regarding digital illustration/manga making. Mainly in the brushes. I feel like I have far too many atm. And might want to cut some down. Got like alot of stipples brushes for example.

Granted, I do worry about being limited on ink brushes that might help out for time cutting, such as cross hatches and stippling. Or generally more creative brush works.

My general inspirations are Hirohiko Araki, and Takehiko Inoue. Both their illustrations and manga work, influenced my brush choices.

Marco Bucci and KNKL are unironically all you need to learn the basics of digital color picking and color theory for shadows, lights, highlights and material rendering. I highly recommend Bucci's videos for the overall theory and then KNKL's old videos about rendering material spheres and metallic objects. None of that will really help you with your main problem which is the wonky proportions and perspective you usually scribble in drip's Drawpile.

Not that anon, but he's sort of right. For beginners, studies alone will not lead to a practical understanding of anime, manga, cartoons, or any kind of drawing that involves design decisions. You're just transferring what you see, which is absolutely a needed skill, but it doesn't matter what your subject is. As an exercise, the difference between copying a frame of anime versus a photo of a person largely boils down to value range.

I attempted to use the method you used (red line gestures, then form the body)

I'm not too sure if it's better than the older one, but I felt more confident in drawing it.
Still can't get the bangs/hair ends looking the way I'd like them to, but I think I got the shape of her hair down, even though it's out of proportion here.

Should I try it again, or move on to something else? I want to try drawing her in the "Eminem throwing a pencil at the screen" pose

Perspective wise? There wasn't anything wrong with what you did, I had to push a 3d manikin to a distorted perspective to get it somewhat in the same ballpark as you did.
On anatomy though? You managed to get the hips and legs positioning right of all things even though the hips should be invisible to us lmao but messed up a bit on the right (viewer's right) arm, upper arm and forearm should be obscured by going under her boob, otherwise that particular elbow rotation would be impossible for her hand to rest on her leg.
Her neck was also a bit misaligned, should have been obscured as well in that position so that collar shouldn't be visible. I also had to reposition her left shoulder and arm to fit the aligned right shoulder but I don't think there was anything wrong with it as it was other than making her hand and fingers a bit slimmer, you probably referenced your own hand here hence the more mannish proportion of it. Feet were a bit out of perspective too so I just set the left one in line with were the grid was supposed to be, unless you wanted to have a different effect from the extreme distortion where one foot was angled and a bit off ground.
Overall though? She looks really cute actually, it shows you put love in it even though it ended a bit unpolished.

You need to get proportions down before doing any rendering.
Start with a stick figure; head, rib-cage and pelvis as cubes, joints as balls.
Then you measure. Does it look correct? Compare lengths of limbs etc with reference.
Then give limbs some volume. Start placing major elements (skirt, bow, hair, facial features etc). Block out colors, followed by big shadows.
THEN you can go ahead and render.

I actually did go back and work in the pelvis and such around the basic art and ended up with pic related (after many an anon told me the eyes looked "picasso-esque" and not in a good way.
>Then you measure. Does it look correct? Compare lengths of limbs etc with reference.
So I am 7.5 heads tall IRL and I tend to draw my figures as such, but sometimes I murk the proportions to give the giant anime eyes a bigger head to fit on, which results in shortening the entire character, anyways, I did end up referencing the official art moreso.

>>7927529

Wow creepy looking from a simple image search i think I saw this game on /v/.
whats funny is I am ESL with Russian being my first language, I still can speak and understand it well, fluently with some anglophile charisma thrown in. though I can read, it's very at a second grader pace because I didn't grow up surrounded by Cyrillic.
You bring up a valid point...Russosphere depression and anime...how exactly would that work? Probably wouldn't. I'll give it a more morbid drawing a shot I suppose.
>>
>>7928010
Kek guess I was right on the money.
Russian artists usually have 2 archetypes they fill when they get into drawing: "the depressed anime girl in a melancholic neon-lit background" and the "I draw what I see in my daily life (depressed abominations [in a neon-lit background]).
If you want my opinion? You could probably get a following on social media with your odd style. It makes people stop and stare at your art, which is a good thing believe it or not.

Maybe as a 2 min warmup? That's one of those technical skills that you build up over a long time by drawing and applying the things you learn. I’ve used a modified version of it for anime faces with some success. Anyway, when it comes to anime just remember that symbols determine construction, and not the other way around (which is how it is for realistic styles). Don’t get hung up on trying to find a “perfect” method.

>what I see the most is people using generic boxes
I’m pretty sure the person teaching this doesn’t actually use this box method to draw.
Actually, most artists don’t really use the structures they teach others.
They learned without knowing how they did it, and later tried to create methods to teach people.

I mean, you obviously need to understand eye construction to know how to draw the eye on the left. This method didn’t actually teach you how to do it.

Personally I think it's better not to make super complex constructions because it's super easy to fuck up the construction itself and then you can't place the elements right anymore

Stick to a reverse egg head, middle line, eye line for reference and maybe a triangle to place the mouth, then fix the jawline later

Also I think it's better to draw the mouth before the nose to get feature placement better

oh I see, then iris size is okay. regarding lineart I feel like ur too stiff and maybe need to adjust the pressure curve on your tablet, and maybe use a opacity/size pressure brush for the lines, go funky with the lines i'd say given your objective

ill give it a shot
also, i think maybe im not fundamentally understanding why people (not just you but other people) say that to achieve their lining style you need to be rougher/funkier because when i look at their lines, all i see are clear straight lines, to me rough/funky would imply lines not connecting properly or going into an incorrect direction or having lines double up on top of eachother, i feel like this lack of understanding on my part is whats throwing me off
