Every time I see people talking about wanting "drawfriends" or "art mutuals" I am puzzled as to not only why they want that but as to what would the point of that even be, too. I just dont get it, what am I missing here?Unironic question, so I would like unironic answers, please.
>>7904976Generally, people who create think differently than people who only consume. It's good to keep like minded people in your company as it can lead to creative fodder.
why would you want friends who don't make anything? so you can explain for the 40th time why you're spending saturday on a drawing instead of playing a game? artist friends just get it, you don't have to justify yourself. also seeing other anons actually finish things makes you less of a lazy piece of shit. it's not that deep.
>>7904976your normie friends will never tell you your work is bad. they'll just say 'oh wow cool' and move on because they don't actually care. artist friends will call you out when you're being shit if you're asking for it and that's the only way you actually improve. surrounding yourself with people who have no standards is how you stay mediocre forever.
>>7904976Don't make friends, just remain solo. I'm genuinely saying this.
>>7904976>what am I missing here?Think about the your art rolemodel, now think about your art. Do you see how far away you are from it? now imagine having someone a few steps ahead, how they can warn you about traps and give you advice as you catch up to them. Think about having someone behind, you can reinforce knowledge and gain confidence from them. Think about having a peer about the same level as you, how they can help you on your blindspots, spur you on with competition and you have a comrade in war you can complain to. Even lions who are kicked out of their pride knows it's a good idea to group up with other kicked out lions because they'd be easily ganged up on and eaten alive. A sad reality of this world it's not what you know, it's who you know. If you like someone you'd help them out and people do not have the same values as you, also it's hardwork finding someone you're comfortable working with, so getting a referral from a guy you trust is easy. All of the world operates this way and you're a fool if you think you can win alone.
>>7904981its efficient for sure, but not the only way to improve. Be more self critical, past a certain point thats all you can do.
I have art rivals and draw-enemies. I can't let them win.
All I have is trolls n buddy trolls the art community is cold and cruel, and they want you dead.
>>7904976It's fun to hang out with other artists
>>7904976Cause for the ones who are actually good at it(or at least investing their time to be good at it) its an inherently isolating activity to take part in. Having at least one other faggot who gets it and to discuss this specific shit with is a mustAnd before any of you faggots come on here and say "I walk alone" the fact that you post on this board at all is that you need some fucking form of communication with someone that fucking gets it.
>>7905041I walk alone. Friends just slow you down.
>>7905046
all of the same age/younger artists who are better than me in certain aspects FIRE me the fuck up to 1up them It annoys me to no end, but artists who are not as good as I I am generally overally nice to. I pay it forward from when superior artist senpai drew my lame doodles back in the day and me feel special. Now thatI 've gotten better, I try to pass that magic on to the next generation. But fuck you if you're better than me jj/k but not really All of my art friends with any shred of talent were always too busy creating to really "talk" and if you're serious you just motivate each other and are always giving harsh crits because you both know you want to get better, and 9 times out of 10 you agree with the suggestion because they have a valuable lense outside your work, and you trust their judgement based on their merit as a fellow contemporary artist. I think the best thing I got to do was eventually meet up IRL with my art buddy from years of chatting on MSN messenger. We played Catherine, he showed me his computer for art and we kept referring to each other by username. it was rad. eventually, people just move on, and good artists get picked up and your once friend has to go professional and can't / wont talk to you. not out of of malice, you smile and remember the good times and good luck bud into the sunset as you move onwards on your own path.
>>7904976Some people have fun drawing and like to sometimes share the fun with friends who also draw. Some want mutually beneficial relationships where they retweet each other's art or have exchanges that gain them more followers. Some just want to have friends who share a hobby so they can talk more freely about that hobby, as opposed to, like, awkwardly talking about music production to a deaf man, figuratively speaking.
It's a gay term but unironically how fucking autistic or retarded do you need to be to require someone to explain the concept of a friend to you? It's having someone on your wavelength that you can bounce ideas off of and inspire one another to improve, etc., that isn't some guy represented by text on the internet. Crazy thread.
>>7905338sounds like a waste of time. why not just get a dog? you’re my competitor, why would i need to be art friends with you? you sure were not there when i was struggling and stuck in the mud of suck grinding it out, so why would you want to be friends now? when i have shit? let’s be real; if someone improves faster than you they won’t be on your wavelength anymore now would they? they would drift away to be with others on their new channel. it’s better to just do this alone until you can stand and be selective of who you get close to.
>>7905341>you’re my competitorYou're not even playing the game. If you were playing the game, the rest of what you wrote demonstrates you'd get your shit pushed in and your misplaced pride would end your friendships. So you don't need to worry about this question about friends for any reason.
>>7905341Well, since you utilitarian and self serving in your thought processes think of it this way, rag tag indie teams crop up because people with skills come to know each other and decide to collab on a project together. As a matter of fact, putting yourself out there into communities is one of the only ways you'll ever make it in the art world. It's how you build a natural follower base/peers.
>>7904976humans are social and like doing things together, even the most autistic shut in knows this which is why we come to ic to talk about our hobby.
>>7904976Clearly the ultimate goal of it is to circlejerk on discord so they can all do the epic social engineering and suck each other on social media for the epic numbers that tell everyone how much your existence worth.Back then it was f4f, now it's "moots"same game, different name
>>7905358If you were on youtube between 2007 - 2009 people were doing sub 4 sub and forming groups. “mutuals” was just another number to the same goal. Now? Oh my GOD lord Japanese man followed me?? It’s such an honor! I must kiss the floor and roll the carpet where they walk. I must sanitize my profile right now and clench my asscheeks for if I dare even utter a single line of *gulp* english h-he may unfollow me OH GOD NOOO that can’t happen I can’t be myself now!!! I can’t post memes it’ll tarnish my beautiful, very coordinated (not) gallery on a platform that isn’t a gallery!
If it's on twitter, I've found that these people are trying to game the algorithm. By having a lot of engagement with your posts, it'll be pushed more.Twitter art community is filled with mutual sharing + "share your art" posts which are just thinly veiled attempts to get a lot of engagement on their posts.
>>7905348No it isn’t and I’ll prove it to you.
>>7904981Precisely this. I've no art friends so the only way ive managed to improve in the last half decade is to become an unhealthy critic of myselfBecause as an artist , I know artists make shit friends because so many my age do want shit to do with anyone most of the timeOr im just projecting Anyway time to remain ignored while I slink back into my hole and pretend its not my own fault lol
>>7905341I have climbed the ladder enough to be in the circles of professionals and can say without a shadow of a doubt that this attitude will keep you a nobody forever. I know you won't listen to me because you're obviously a useless faggot so I say this for everyone else who may see this. If this is your attitude either quit art or git gud otherwise you're just going to torture yourself forever and get nowhere.
>>7905411>or git gudThat is the prerequisite mindset of walking solo, einstein. If you’re good then it doesn’t matter. If you’re not good then “climbing the lad—sucking cocks and playing patty cake” is just another path that I don’t subscribe to.
>>7905414Git gud with people dumbass. See, people like you don't fail because you're art is bad, you fail because you are absolutely insufferable to be around. Why would someone who is working on a project that they have money riding on ever want anything to do with someone who only sees them as competition? Heck, I've been betrayed by people alot and you know what happened to those people? They sit in the same damn place they were ten years ago and bitch that "I pulled the ladder up on them" without realizing that they were the ones who knocked it down themselves.
>>7905414He's right you know. Your art is probably going to be fine doing it alone, but humans need some form of connection, what that looks like and means is a little abstract, and how you achieve it is too, but don't purge the idea from your mind, just let it sit there passively at the very least even if you wont act on it.
>>7904976Humans are social creatures you retard, what is there to get?
>>7904976Art Peers/Art Friends that inspire you, actually want to develop their skills alongside you, and are willing to give and take proper critique are worth their weight in gold."Art Mutuals" who are fine stagnating and just want you to join their mass of people who like/boost their art/commission/Kickstarter posts, however, should be avoided like the plague. They'll make you stagnate and post promo-slop all day too.
>>7905001this is 100% the way to gohaving a nigga you objectively see as a lesser slowly outrank you in art is the #1 passion igniterthere's no better way to progress than the hatred of the idea of someone you hate being better than youit's ESPECIALLY good if they also hate you as well, at which point it's just a back and forth of uppercutting eachother into the stars
>>7905478Facts. I thought all of you were literal faggots around here.
>>7904976i love my fellow artfriends. we get to play tabletop games together and we have a lot of fun designing and drawing our characters together. we get to make silly little projects just to pass the time. we can give each other fair criticism that we would've otherwise been most likely blind to. doing art trends together can be a good excuse to encourage us all to draw. we can all draw each other birthday gifts. none of us post on social media, we just like hanging out and enjoying of our hobbies together.
>>7904976Probably just people who you can speak to about art issues, and because they have similar interests in art, that will listen with sincerity. If someone spoke to you about something your not interested in, you would listen half heartedly, and give similarly heart felt responses. It's also about being able to draw with each other, because obviously that can't be done with someone who doesn't.If you're at home a lot drawing (whether as a hobby or professionally), having someone to chat to while drawing is a good thing. This doesn't necessarily have to be another artist, but other artists would be in a similar position (as would other freelancer type jobs, like writers, programmers, editors, though they probably wouldn't be able to speak as much due to the type of work they're doing compared to artists). Finally, someone who draws will see an image differently and give differing critique than someone who doesn't - both critiques are valuable, but with no art friends, you'll be missing one of them.
>>7905341Bro.. i cant help but feel like you're talking out your ass, tf you even make that anyone cares about. Noone here, has the chops to talk like that or they wouldn't be here , stop larping.
>>7905041But i walk a lonely road
>>7906047>man expresses his right to be solo >tf you make that anyone cares bro don’t talk outside the norm bro stop being you broleave me alone
