If I'm unable to deduce what the image is trying to convey by just the image alone, then I feel it's failed somewhat.If I'm super enraptured by an image, sure, maybe I'll want to look up more about it including the artist's intent, but in most cases the artwork should speak for itself.
>>7907050it requires a lot of studying and judgment. you can't just study symbolic meanings that were particular to one era or place and apply it universally.deciphering art from the era of of the painting you posted might be impossible in that artists of that time, especially the surrealists, often worked in solipsistic ways. it may not even be about a particular meaning but about a sense of having a meaning. whereas studying something from the renaissance might be difficult in that they were meant for princely viewers who read history, classics, philology, the bible and their commentaries.
