After a month or two of paper you can reasonably start digital or just deal with the increased difficulty by bashing your skull open (even more than normal)

Mentioning /fig/ is doubly weird because the first thing you're supposed to do is gesture and this lacks any gesture. If you were to actually to do this pose, the shoulder would move too. This pose seems too stiff.

Again, all of this is only mentioned because of the effort you put into it. Nobody would care if the stiffness was accompanied by a quick sketch or something like that. Not a completed drawing.

How does one make porn art more INTENSE and like sloppy/intimate? Does it just come with time because I feel all my NSFW just feels like two people vaguely interacting esp when it's supposed to be post-nut

if we compare the legs, one is correct, the left leg, but the right leg is completely odd when focusing on the kneecap and the ankle, the ankle's detail made me think this was AI
the kneecap on the right is very odd and that made me think that the knee was facing the other way away from the camera lmao

the hands are off proportions with each other, the left arm/hand should be 'fading' into perspective, so it'd look smaller compared to the right, but it's the opposite
but dude, you got something going, you got the style and the art doesn't look bad at all, just some details are off when putting your eyes on it, it's some inconsistencies, even with her heels design being sort of different with eachother for example

Developing your own style is an emergent property of copying things that you like. Find two or three different artists and imitate their work regularly. Make sure you are aware of what you like specifically about their work and actively integrate it into your own. For example, I like Gege Akutami. I copy a lot of panels from JJK for fun between studies. Over time, I notice I've picked up the messy, scratchy nature of the lines used by that particular artist that they use to define forms at times. Pic related.

You'll find more success trying to tell short stories with your work. Most NSFW art isn't particularly interesting in a vacuum unless the composition or rendering is striking. Try expanding your ideas to 3 or 4 panels to build tension towards the intimacy.

Even /beg/ can slightly change a pose to appear as if they didn't use ref/ai/bases, albeit they won't do it as well as more experienced cheaters.

Anything drawn digitally will be scrutinized like this. It's very easy to cheat your way to competence with tools. If this was a traditional drawing, no one would say anything. Even I would just admit defeat and admit I was wrong. But so long as it's digital, there's always a risk of cheating. The fact that it closely matches the model just makes it suspicious. Not saying they did it, it's just suspicious.

Any good rendering / color resources for retards? I've tried reading James Gurney's books and random Youtube resources, but I find that my colors always end up feeling muted. Also, feel like I've been stuck in a plateau for a good while due to taking the easy way out and mostly just doing eye-level / frontal perspective of characters, so I tried something else here.

I think you're doing fine so far. It's easy to tell you have a lot of the knowledge to inform setting up your values which is easily the most important thing in rendering or coloring. I don't think your colors are muted, but you can always check with a grayscale filter. Keep working at it. Your skills will get sharper as you keep working at it. You know some areas of weakness with your posing or composition, so keep pushing in that area while also maintaining what you know about your values

Digital is easier.

At least it FEELS easier. It won't make you go from /beg/ to /int/ but it's a far less frustrating medium to work on. I think pro artists are right when they say that the traditional medium is the best to learn on. But I think that if you're drawing less because you're constantly frustrated while drawing traditionally, that becomes a moot point. Anything that gets to you to draw more is always going to be preferred over the "correct" way to learn.

I am especially proud of my foot drawing. I guess those 50+ feet drawings payed off. The funny thing about that is that those were all done digitally at the time. I never drew a single foot traditionally. Yet, I show more competence in drawing feet than basically anything else. Comparatively, of course. And maybe that's what I got wrong the whole time. I was drawing lips and noses all traditionally but what I probably should've done was draw them digitally. I might've actually shown improvement rather than what you see here. I guess it's not completely awful but I'm very unsatisfied with my progress so far. Especially considering the amount I did. For 200 lip drawings, I should NOT feel uncomfortable drawing them. It should only take less than 150 iterations. Though now that I think about it, this comes from my digital drawing days. So maybe drawing digitally actually helps you improve FASTER. Interesting...

Anyway, I will be drawing eyes almost exclusively digitally. Fuck the post-its. If I am to do anything traditionally, it will be for Observational Training ONLY. I'll make another post later today detailing how my training will progress regarding that. However, when it comes to basically everything else, we're migrating completely over to digital.

At home I have an XPPen Artist 13.2 v2 and I'm quite satisfied with it. If I stick with drawing for another month, I'll purchase a portable tablet so I can take it to work with me to draw on my breaks.

This advice sounds nice but it doesn't actually work.
You can't just say, "don't draw symbols, draw cubes!!" and somehow that immediately clicks.
In order to be able to draw in 3D you need to first be able to observe. Without observational ability, how would I be able to notice how the eye lids wraps around the eyeball? If I can't see it or understand it, then I can't draw it. This is often taken for granted by artists who have been drawing their whole life. They assume everyone can see these things. But it often takes several drawings before a beginner notices something that was immediately obvious to the artist who has been drawing their whole life.

These are from imagination but if I were to draw these from reference, my eye drawings would still look like symbols because I haven't drawn enough eyes. I can use tricks to make it appear 3D but that doesn't mean I'm actually thinking about it in 3D. In order to think of something in 3D, you need to first have accurate proportions of the thing you're trying to make 3D. If you're struggling with proportion, forcing your brain to try to make it 3D is going to be too much for it to handle and you'll wear yourself out.

So the first thing I should be doing is getting the proportions correct. Then and only THEN could I transform it into a 3D object. Trying to do both at the same time without internalizing proportion is far too difficult for a beginner. Also, you can see I'm trying to think in 3D with the hand by making it a cuboid shape. You can see the wrapping lines I put on it. So it's not that I'm trying to symbol draw, it's that my ability to draw certain things is so shit that making it 3D is the least of my worries.

When I was drawing lips, it took about 72 drawings before I could FEEL the lines I was drawing wrapping around the form. Before that, I was just copying what I was looking at.

I think that's the point I'm trying to get at.
And maybe you're right, you probably should learn about it as early as possible. Even in that case, I probably wouldn't have felt what I felt had I known nothing about form or perspective. It's hard to say.

I wish there was a singular path that you take to get good at drawing. Like guaranteed. "Learn these things at ANY skill level and you will improve!" But I can't seem to figure it out. A lot of the things I figure out is often based off of an amalgamation of several different tutorials and artbooks that comes as a moment of eureka while I'm drawing.

You made me realize something.

Drawing digitally is like typing on a keyboard for writers.
Sure, an aspiring writer COULD learn to write using a notebook but that's an extremely inefficient way to learn how to write. It is also theoretically the best way to learn how to write but it's also the most painful.

No wonder drawing traditionally was so hard. That comparison was like a eureka moment for me. It's not that I hate drawing, it's that I hate the inefficiency of drawing traditionally. And while I do love writing traditionally, that only encompasses about 1-2% of my total writing. The rest is completely digital.

This also explains why I actually had (some) fun doing the digital drawings I did while I loathed the traditional drawings. I could be wrong but I don't even think it's worth pursuing drawing/art if you don't have a digital tablet. It's simply far too inefficient and unfun.

If someone told me I HAD to write traditionally in notebooks, I would've fucking hated it, too!

Help, I need directions.
I've decided to start learning how to draw and got a digital tablet for it, but it feels like having to eat an elephant with fork and knife by doing it alone, and I'm pretty clueless and lost.

From reading and watching the resources in OP I'm getting the idea I have to get really strong fundamentals, but I'm not sure how to structure my day and what to study in order to become really good. I've already tackled perspective and a little of human anatomy on my own, and tried to fix my lines, but it's really a lot and I'm still terrible at taking proportions, I'm very slow, I'm not sure how to find resources that would help me improve, etc.

I'm also poor and can't afford IRL lessons or anything, so I'd like to join a study group, but since I want to get into drawing lolis and body horror I think I'd fit only with other deviants from here.

Can someone help me out?

Thanks for insights anons, I mostly want to learn this area of drawing for the sake of improving my 3d. In 3d, I mostly do simple stylized environmental stuff, but now I also want to make some characters and I think it would be ideal to be able to learn 2d sketching in certain styles to come up with interesting designs. Eyes are where I throw in the towel.

Lips weren't too bad, noses made no fucking sense, but eyes are where I have to give up. Not on drawing, just on the Portrait Project. I think Portraiture is the hardest mode. Even learning to draw hands isn't as hard as learning to draw the face. You can trace hands and make them look pretty good. You can try and trace a face all you want but if you don't know instinctively what lines to exclude or what to add, it'll always look like shit.

So I'm giving it up.
No more portraiture.

Instead, we're going to focus on Symbol Drawing. We're going /asg/ in this bitch. But specifically focusing on faces in anime. Basically the route that every weeb adult takes when they first learn how to draw. It's the path of least resistance and will at least get me to the point where I can make something that looks decent without months of virtually zero improvement.

The only problem I have now is figuring out what style I'm going to yiff. 90s anime? Teekyuu? What style do I want to emulate?

If I'm thinking about my goals in art, I want to emulate the style that can transition easily to comedy. So that probably means I can't do those moe, kawaii AF, animes that are slice of life or romance. Not that they can't be comedy but that the style doesn't lend itself to comedy.

I might not even do anime. I might go Jack Hamm on my meat and do classic cartoons instead. The point is to NOT learn drawing correctly. Fuck perspective. Fuck form. Fuck all of that. We're doing it completely "wrong." What this will do is either show me just how much I really need the fundamentals, or if I'm right, get me to the point where I can actually draw something that looks decent. Either work for me. Honestly, anything that gets me to draw more works for me. That's the most important thing after all.

Yes and no.
For drawing, mastery of actual motor skills is important, but the actual "what am i drawing" part of drawing dictates the usage of lines. Think of it in terms of an engine vs a car.
You can have a whole car (mental skill, aka; observation, imagination, spatial sense, appealability, etc), but if it doesn't have an engine in it (mechanical motor skills, or a proper engine in it that fits the rest of the car's specs), it isn't going to drive - or drive that well at all, no matter how much the car has a "technical" superiority.
And vice versa, having a top of the line engine without having a car to put it into will just make it rust on a rack and not get used.
The key is to find a good balance in between the car and the engine, not perfection.

Bringing these to work so I can work on them in my lunch break. When I have time, I want to do multiple versions of the same eye in my networking textbook just to get the symbols down. I think I'm pretty good at remembering symbols so these should be useful anytime I need to draw an eye. I'll probably do like a hundred of them and pick like a dozen of my favorites to use from imagination anytime I'm drawing. That way I can have something decent looking. The eyes make or break a drawing so this part is important. I wouldn't be surprised if I need to spend a few weeks on this.

Marco Bucci videos are pretty great for color in general. For a rendering process, This video is pretty great. Otherwise, taking courses and doing a variety of exercises will broaden your understanding of concepts.

You'll notice this is a pretty universal process. You'll see a lot of different flavors of (1) block-in -> (2) average light/shadow shapes -> (3) middle value -> (4) bounced light -> (5) occlusion shadow -> (6) highlights -> (7) refine/overpaint. Understanding modelling factors helps with this. Some steps can combine or be done simultaneously like (1,2) or (2,3). Getting real comfortable at each step before including the next tends to help prevent frustration. So if you suck at block-ins then you're going to have a bad time doing the rest because the foundation isn't so good. The stronger your ability to observe and perceive different concepts in a subject, the more informed your drawing can be.

I CAN FINALLY FUCKING DRAW!

At least it feels like I "get it" now, not that I'm good at it.
When I made this drawing, as bad as it is, it made me realize a few things.

On the first point, I was judging myself using a pros standard while not having put in the amount of hours a pro did. This is obviously unfair. How will I be able to do the things that people spent thousands of hours doing in just a few hundred? If I too had thousands of hours, THEN it would be different. But I haven't drawn as much as I should have drawn to warrant such harsh criticism from myself. Instead, as I stated in point 2, I should have focused on the improvement I made since last week or last month. This is a far better and more measurable metric than, "I'm not as good as Shadman still! I'm so bad!!" This was exacerbated by point 3, which was my technique being completely fucking wrong. Even pros need to use the block in method sometimes to make sure they get accurate proportions yet I thought, as a /beg/, I was going to yoink the proportions from thin air with little friction.

All in all, I think drawing is both hard and easy. Kinda like how I am with your mom.
It's hard in the sense that you have to do a hundred different skills at the same time to get anything good but easy in the sense that those hundred different skills aren't particularly difficult to learn. It just takes a lot of time and iterations to learn them.

At home, I've begun tracing to get a general idea of where I'm at with my drawing ability. It's not 100% tracing, it's more like 20/80, tracing/drawing. Since I focused so much on proportions, my actual drawing ability is almost non-existent. So I might be able to put down the proportions relatively accurately but after that, I'm completely lost. How do you make something look good? That's what I want to figure out.

Keeping your lines simple and as long as possible. Notice how even though I've traced over your rough keeping the proportions about the same, it comes out looking more... graceful and rhythmic by comparison. Even though the legs are too long and the foot is clipping into the shin, you still have lines of relatively nice quality. Learning about rhythm while locking in your observations may be the next step for you. That or just general line quality and confidence. Use plumb lines often and keep checking your work

The """10,000 hour rule""" is highly misrepresented. This applied to ELITES. We're talking top 1-5% of all violinists. These weren't people who were pretty good at what they did, they were EXPERTS.

In reality, competence, that's roughly /int/, takes only about 1,000 hours of deliberate practice and play. If we compare this to video games (inb4 zoomer!!!), it does take about 1,000 hours before you're better than the average player and can compete competitively. To be really good though, you need a minimum of 3,000 hours and often upwards to 7,000 or more hours. But at that point, you're at a very high level and getting close to being an expert. Most CS pros tend to have about 12,000-17,000 hours. But again, they're pros, the best of the best. Not your average Faceit player.

Of course, those 1,000 hours to competence can quickly turn into 3,000 or more if you're practicing incorrectly. That's why adults who pick up drawing and stick to it don't take 12-15 years to get decent but kids often take over a decade to get out of DeviantArt-tier artwork.

Also, artists severely overestimate how much they actually draw and most of them, even the ones who can draw well, do not have 10,000 hours of actual drawing experience. If they were actually timed, most would be at around 3,000 or 5,000.

I did notice that artists who are good often mess up proportions yet still make a drawing look good. I'll attach an example from an old thread from 2020. The anatomy is so fucked up yet it's still a good picture. Maybe it is just line quality and confidence, which just comes from drawing more.

Most of us are results driven. Even a lot of artists are results driven. They draw for the Instagram likes, not for the process. I've seen them admit that they wouldn't have drawn if it wasn't for the likes. So it makes sense why this happens.

I don't think it's just switch you can turn off though. You just decide it. Will indifference into manifesting. That's something you need to work on daily until it becomes easier and easier to care about your progress more than the results. Of course, if you have no progress (i.e. starting out), then there's nothing there to help you. That's likely why it's so easy to quit when first starting out.

Tracing is a valuable tool to manage your expectations.
>Never expect to copy a drawing better than you can trace it.
It's often a wakeup call to how bad we really are at drawing when we trace something and it still looks like complete shit. Then we wonder why our copies always come out like shit. Not everything is about proportion.

Relating to my previous post about learning how to make things more appealing, I'm going to start tracing on the side and trying to figure out ways to make the trace look more appealing. This absolves me of the stress of trying to get my proportions right to focus entirely on drawing something to make it look appealing. This might even mean straying really far from the reference and using extremely simple concepts. For instance, the nose simplified as a dot and the mouth a line. Maybe even the headshape is completely changed. Whatever it takes to make the drawing feel more appealing.

I think this along with practicing proportions will help me improve faster than I have been these past two weeks. Getting a drawing tablet last weekend makes all of this significantly easier. No lighttable nonsense or any of that. Just drawing.

Look into reilly rhythms, similar but not quite. You're going to inevitably need to modify whatever approach you find. What Ina has going is mostly a simplified down mannequin. Knowing the bean for torso and some simplified head (a roundish right triangle for a quick profile view does quite well) will also serve well. I don't know if anyone teaches gesture drawing that way, Steve Houston or Michael Hampton might be closer to what you're looking for. Better yet look at how animators do it. More importantly, don't do 30 second gestures. Assuming you're at the level I think you're at, you need more time to observe the subject and make good decisions. I'd recommend 2-3 minutes. Ideally you should have a process for how developed the drawing should be. Have a checklist if you must. Once you've gotten everything that was essential on the page, don't add more. Instead you can rework an area or mark that you think can be better/more interesting if you have the time.

Anon, cannot OBSERVE correctly because he's skipping the copying step where you learn to observe and draw what you're looking at. This is why people fall off at Draw a Box and other drawing courses. Learn observation techniques.
I always recommend Dorian Iten's course.
You don't just blindly copy what you want to draw, you need to observe relationships. Just doing copies blindly is something not even good artists can do without guidelines or some method.

The point of this is to get BASIC observational skill. This means you don't struggle figuring out the angle of lines, distances between them, and sizes of shapes. You focus primarily on 2D here.

Once you can copy 2D fairly comfortably, you'll move onto perspective where you'll learn forms and construction. Anons on here will tell you to immediately jump to form and construction as a /beg/ but they're craps trying to make you fail. You'll encounter the same issue you have now if you do that. Trust me, I did everything incorrectly and am only now starting to figuring it out.

I'll attach my own copy as an example.
I start off with blocking in the largest shapes and then move onto a rough sketch before darkening it up. It's not a great final product but it's a trad drawing and the point was to learn not to have a pretty picture, and also lack of actual drawing experience.

Drawing isn't a video game where you can figure it out by pure grinding and maybe one or two YouTube videos here and there.

As I always say, you can bruteforce any method into working for you but it doesn't mean that it's an efficient method.

Look at all the people who copied Bridgman twice and ended up being good at drawing. That works for a small minority of people. Everyone else will copy blindly and not improve. People who can skip steps are typically the kind of people who have been drawing since they were a kid or who have talent. The rest of us notalents have to learn drawing the proper way.

I'm gaining confidence in Observation in 2D now so I'll soon move onto perspective. Moving over to a digital tablet has made things much easier for me. I'd say it's basically required. If you're still drawing traditionally, you'd basically be like a writer who hates using keyboards to write.

I think you're severely underestimating how much time it takes to get to 10,000 hours. If we compare this to video games again, you have to make a deliberate effort to play as much as possible for years just to barely hit 7,000 hours. Also, you brought up needing 10,000 hours to become an illustrator. But the point I'm making is that competence doesn't require 10,000 hours. Illustrators aren't just "competent" in their field. Figure Drawing is one of the fundamentals you'll learn where you can apply construction. But it's going to be frustrating to do if you don't first have perspective/form knowledge and even worst if you don't have the ability to copy something.
You don't "have" to do anything, I'm just providing a way to learn that offers the least amount of resistance. Many people have learned using various odd methods, namely copying Bridgman twice and somehow never needing to study the fundamentals. That works for some people, won't work for most.
If I'm being completely honest, you'll have to figure out your own path. I can only provide a suggestion but you need to fine-tune it to your own proclivities. For instance, if you're going to draw American cartoons, you need to learn silhouette but you don't really need anatomy.
Stuff like that.

I don't think it's unconquerable though. I've completed le 90 day no fap challenge recently. I had to really limit my distractions though, and drawing at the wrong time made me slip down the slope. I'm going to break down proportions further.
Dorian Iten talks of getting the biggest proportions FIRST before moving into the block in. I want to focus on that first part before moving into the block in. That means 100 to 150 iterations of this.

I'm dubbing it BATTLE SCARS.
So the BATTLE SCARS METHOD.
But it's not really a method, it's just the first 5-7 lines you put down to mark the largest proportional relationships.
If you can't even get this absolute basic part first, the whole drawing falls apart.

In the drawing below, I was trying to make the width of the drawing too long until I realized that the entire figure fit within a box. That's because the amount of space the figure took up was as tall as it was wide. This is something I need to be able to instinctively see and put down. The fact that I was making the width too long proves that I do not have this in my subconscious and need to train it. So that's the ABSOLUTE FIRST step of the Observational guide. I'll update my Flowchart accordingly.

Wrote more of the script.
I have a several drawings to do when I get home.

I learned from my previously failed Visual Novels that it's better to steamroll ahead and finish something, even if it's bad, than to stay stuck on chapter 1 trying to perfect it. I also learned not to get too ahead of myself. Writing too much script without drawings will just overwhelm me later. So my approach for this one will be to write a little bit of the script then do the drawings, then rinse and repeat until the chapter is done.

For the first chapter, we introduce Aria and the main characters. This is supposed to be a self-insert, so I'm going to be in there helping Aria escape /ic/. I should probably think of other characters.

I think I'm starting to understand why the face is so hard to draw.
It's because the face consists of a bunch of value changes, NOT contours.

This eureka moment came to me when studying the mouth. The mouth IS NOT a contour. That's why it's so fucking hard to draw. It's a VALUE CHANGE. We're drawing a form that overlaps a mound that has slight gradation. The overlapping part can easily be denoted with a contour but the rest of the lips CANNOT. That's why you NEED to stylize the face if you're not rendering values. It's impossible to create a good picture by trying to actually the values exactly how you see them because they are NOT contours.

This is why drawing feet felt easier. It's not because they are less complex than faces, though they are, but because I'm specifically focusing on the CONTOURS of the foot, not on the subtle gradations of value on the foot. If I was forced to draw the subtleties of the values, it would become just as difficult to draw as the face. This is why when we draw feet, we remove as much detail as possible. If there is a bunch of wrinkles on the soles, we typically do not draw it.

The point is to take the sections of Dorian Iten's course slowly. So instead of rushing to block-in, we first focus our attention at the very first part. Focus on the huge shapes. Training our eye to tell whether our subject is as tall as it is wide. THAT specific. This is because I seem to struggle with this absolute basic fundamental step. Once I've got that step down, I'm reckoning it'd take about 150 (maybe 250 if I'm really untalented), before I got it down intuitively and can move onto blocking in.

I've also included a section regarding figure drawing. That means to learn the armature (and maybe a little gesture) before taking a bottom-up approach. This means learning to draw the feet first as opposed to the head first. Of all the figure drawing videos I watched, I believe they do all of it at once, that just seems like too much. You never really know when you're "done" and can move onto something else. Anons on other threads imply you need to draw 100,000 figures before you can work on your coomslop, I just don't buy it. Maybe if you aimlessly study figures, perhaps, but that applies to everything.
